NA Cup Tourney.cc site is back up

(lister-absurd) #21

Ya know this was an informal little tourney which actually got more of the old comp players to hang around more, what was so bad about that? It coulda been better if … coulda woulda who cares…

I played as a ringer against sup the other day, yes we all know i suck. But that aside, a gzr team of 3 (pub player ringers) and 2 regulars crushed them. We clearly didnt win because of superior teamwork but just they need to work on basic play, Aiming, anticipating, etc…
Teamwork wont fix it If 1 player can take 2 or 3 down solo. I don’t want to kick them for trying because they played clean and they seemed like good sports, which counts for alot in my book. Its sad they are disgruntled but hell why did only 2 gzr show up? could it be that they lost the first 2 matches too and decided to do other things? Is fate playing anymore after the first loss? I dont know, these are just questions of my addled tired mind.

As for how we can make this better? I don’t know but it seems to me there isn’t enough scrimming going on for sure. As for one idea, if any “good” teams could invite one or two leaders of a pub team to participate in a scrim against another good team to really see how the orginization is done, of course this mighta been covered in inferno’s class i missed.

Quoting myself for emphasis. This has been good for getting some old-timers to shake off the rust and rediscover the fun of ETQW. Last thing I want is for plans for a future event to get scrapped because we insist on flaming each other about the preferred format for the next one.

I want there to be a ‘next one’ and I want it to be a catalyst for getting people off ranked servers and experiencing organized team play - competitive or not.

(Apples) #23

Format is good, I’m a pubhoe with some aim under my belt (really far from the better ones) and enjoy this cup, even with no “uber” organisation, will try a pub clan only if you want… there will be one team…

Lets try this : will give you more info soon about a pub comp only, at least i’ll try, lets see

(Stroggafier) #24

I have no experience playing PC version in MP. I use my Rumblepad for vehicles, I’m still finding myself hunting for the right KB keys as infantry, and I get owned 1/3 of the time on vanilla campaigns. No doubt I would suck.

Last week, I joined a server that had the “Quick” title, as an observer. I saw they were short a player, but when tried to join the short handed team, was told this was only for certain clan members. So, I politely left.

Ah well, maybe next month I’ll get up the courage to try again.

(Cankor) #25

OK, yeah…

It’s tough to mix teams with lots of comp experience with new inexperienced teams. It is demoralizing and I feel bad because we talked SUP into playing and it’s turning out more or less how they feared it would. And yeah, there are teams who went through the same exact thing (pub clans getting involved in comp as opposed to a bunch of comp players coming together to form a team) and some of you will be saying suck it up and take your licks as part of the learning curve, but a lot of people got involved in comp (including myself) by playing on a team with more experience so I don’t think we can appreciate how demoralizing it can be.

So, hat’s off to SUP for at least trying. It’s too bad some of the other pub clans didn’t field teams but water under the bridge at this point.

And for what it’s worth I think Apples is right as far as mixing players up to form more even teams. This will work inside a clan, it probably won’t work outside one (face it, some of you guys are just @holes and no one will want to play with you if you are put on their team

So, I do want to do another one of these because I have seen interest pick up and hell, I just want everyone to have as much fun doing it as I do. So next one will be invitational only to pub clans big enough to field a team. We may only get 4 teams, but hopefully those 4 teams will have a great time competing amongst themselves and get enough experience (and more importantly desire to keep playing stopwatch format format) to keep at it. If SUP signs up for that they’ll be ahead of the learning curve, so hopefully this pain will be their gain.

Anyway, we have some comp games going again, and even some interest from people wanting to watch them. It’s a good start.

And yeah, GzR is having some roster issues and I wish we were able to play with a team of 100% GzR’s, but it’s not from getting spanked our first two games, it’s from our work schedules and having a very shallow roster. We’re going to have to rely on at least 1 ringer every match but hopefully we can stay involved to the end.

First of all, to get you more:

  • are you a console player or a pc player?
  • Do you have access to “the web” or not?

Will help me to figure our disagreement in many other threads…

I play ETQW online over a 10GB wide connection - plenty fast

My preferred MP game is PS3.

  • no server issues or costs
  • can host ranked (BlackArze, rank#27) or unranked (Recall I set up some 2v2 tourney play last year)
  • single vanilla 12-map product only
  • more specialized controller
  • no hassle VOIP
  • fewer if any cheats, fewer glitches

I do play the PC version also, but only SP (so far)

  • KB + M may be more accurate, but its also not as specialized
  • Better game graphics and sound
  • One SP playable custom map, so far

You might say I cross both PC and Console worlds.

iirc every season/cup ended with drama so far, so nothing special here

(canvasback) #29

Confirmed. My kids don’t even like me.

70.32.38.218:27777 : TV server for tonights game OCB vs TAW @ 8:30 PM EST (maybe 8 PM not sure yet) happy watching! thnks susefreak and shelly for setting that up!

I think of myself as a PS3 console player, @Nail, and I prefer the console over the PC version.

(I get what you mean by no SP and tutorial - each to his own) But I play both, and when I play the PC version its only been Single Player Campaign Mode set to Hard (that matches approximately the PS3 ranked standard setting).

From everything I’ve read and experienced so far about the PC version, I’m hard pressed to see any real advantages except for maybe custom maps. But that’s dubious, as only one map I’ve tried, Consite, has the level of bot script sophistication needed for a good SP match.

The console wins hands down in terms of ease of use, flexibility to host / just play, trouble free, and cost free.

Edit: Thanks @Apples for the heads up. Will definately try to be there!

(Aristotle) #33

I just want to say one thing, and I don’t care if somebody said it before me.

You get better by playing better people. Also, you will lose some before you start winning.

Also, I am a sad panda.

Can’t play QW til I have enough money to get a new PC  I am confined to my laptop currently.

How can you say that if you’ve never played online?

(Stroggafier) #35

Quite agree, @Aristotle, the better the opponents and teammates, the better one plays. There are good PS3 players also. BTW, hope you can gather up the scratch for that new PC.

@timestart, I do play online - about 500 hours so far, but I guess you mean the PC version online.

For me, playing the PS3 version online is completely hassle free and enjoyable - except I detest stat whoring and cheats, and right now that has me turned off of online play.

But, to answer your question: I can pretty much imagine the PC online experience, given what I already know and have done with the other modes and versions. I’m sure it would be great. I’ll probably try the PC version online - someday, but I don’t feel the need, and have no skill with the KB+M.

Maybe had SD put in full controller support into the PC version I would be playing the PC version instead of the PS3 version today. But as it stands, the Rumblepad controller is only good for ground vehicles (mind you, it was no picnic, getting the controller to work right). Specifically, for flyers, controller binds would require a capability for second joystick on one controller, and that capability is missing.

(Gradis) #36

No u cant imagine the online experiance. Only jesus and Co can.

(Tandem) #37

Can you, really?

(Stroggafier) #38

Yes, @Tandem…in fact I’m doing it right…now…hmmm, yep, ah hah. :stroggbanana:

Cigarette, anyone?

(shirosae) #39

Dedicated servers, no autoaim, better serverside configuration, mods like ETQWpro & QWTA & flymod etc which offer a pretty significant change from vanilla PC ETQW, let alone the console versions.

Shout out to @susefreak and @shelly for setting up the TV server! About a half dozen spectators joined the fun for OCB vs TAW yesterday on the TV server.

Some highlights of the gamee:
The first map was Ark
Rnd 1:

  • TAW played the Strogg offensive
  • OCB:Temujin set himself up on the rooftop across from the generator on first objective and owned with his Rocket spam until taking himself out in mid shot during an attempt to rebuff an Icuras that challanged his supremacy.
  • TAW was unable to immediately capitalize on the resulting lull in defenses, until, at 8 1/2 minutes into the game, a Strogg plant held, saved from being disarmed by swarming OCB by a well positioned Cyclops.
  • But, despite some effective lemming work to build the laser drill on the second objective, OCB held TAW for the full duration.
    Rnd 2:
  • OCB went for the quick plant and succeeded. However, the TAW defenders swarmed the Strogg and disarmed the plant easily.
  • Three minutes into the round GDF had established a sound defensive position with turrents and heavies well positioned to defend the objective and TAW positioned in strategic rooftop locations.
  • OCB:Temujin broke up the TAW defense with plasma from his Cyclops forcing GDF infantry to find safety inside nearby buildings, their retreat preventing the Strogg from immediately captilizing on the roust.
  • However, OCB had good timing and retaliated with a swarm of infantry, knocking out the Cyclops, killing the hiding Strogg and quickly making a plant, blowing the generator at 4:15 into the game.
  • On the second objective, Chump, Apples and Temujin rushed the laser and were able to build before the GDF could get fully reorganized. Then it was off to the final objective, forcing TAW to defend for a rather lengthy time of about 12 minutes.
  • Once more, the team of three (C.A.T.) proved to be strong.
  • TAW was able to get organized a bit more quickly on the third objective than on the previous, but they failed to keep the Strogg from taking the dome spawn point early and rushing to the tubes.
  • Although Apples had a chance at the 10 minute mark to finish his plant on the tubes, he stopped to defend himself and was taken down by a lone GDF. A back and forth gun battle ensued with grenade volleys deciding who lived or died.
  • On the final rush, Temujin planted and was able to defend. The tubes were blown with 9 minutes remaining.
Good set. 2 points to OCB

By tourney rules, TAW could choose to play Ark again or select another map.

They chose Salvage (Fast)

  • OCB picked up steam on the second map and the rounds went quickly; the second map going again to OCB, ending the game with OCB over TAW 4-0.
  • TAW had lost their steam on the second map and had some bad luck come their way in the form of last man standing being the wrong role to finish the generator and again on the laser objective.
  • Once more the team of C.A.T. distinquished themselves with good predictive ability, coverage and ability to defend their plants.
    GGs boys and girls!

Here are the Quick Cup standings at the end of week 2…
