n00b server admins...

I don’t claim to be anyone special. I know a bit about this and a bit about that. Not a total n00b with game servers, not a seasoned veteran - I’ll offer help where I can, somtimes making myself look like a twat, sometimes not

It was late (3:00am) and I’d finally found a config for ET that gave me a steady 43(21’ monitor, set ET to play in a 640x480 windowed) keep my anti-lag settings from RtCW and like magic I’m able to compensate for natural modem lag once more - happy :slight_smile:

I found a [FuN] server that had a load of ppl still playing for the time of night - campaign mode - it’s ok and there is a little teamplay. I’ve been playing away for about ten minutes when the usual whining starts - ‘hey [TAG]<insertnamehere> everyone is shit apart from us - look, noone is bothering to get the train to the trainyard - blah blah’ - this keeps on until the end of the map, by which time one of the server admins is taking the lead with the moaning.

We’re now well into the next match and the admin is like ‘don’t you ppl know how to set spawnpoints?’, and ‘ffs get an MG down here’ just generally abusing his teammates with the kind of arrogance seen only with n00b admins who think admin work is about behaving like a twat and flaunting your status instead of keeping the game running smoothly and looking for perps.

We’re now on Oasis and I’m playing as medic - uber medic in fact - flying around like a madman keeping ppl alive - our spawn was getting airstrikes all the time. I survived, but there was another player, badly injured that I TK/Revived and gave a whole load of health trying to keep our defence going - I used half of ‘the good stuff’ to make sure this guy could fight whilst I ran off to the guns and ‘healthed’ up the defenders.

Anyway, no sooner had I fixed this guy up but he does a /kill - wtf? with his [ADMIN]<twat> head on he says to me (booming god like voice) ‘Don’t TK/Revive me again, and if I want health I’ll ask for it’ - I’m thinking to myself ‘wtf? who does this guy think he is?’ - so I says to him ‘Look m8, the day you wear a [FuN] skin on your model is the day I discriminate what health I give - ok’, there must have been a few ‘regulars’ on there 'cause he’s feeling brave and says ‘that’s a good idea, I’ll mention that to bani’ like bani’s his personal friend.

Now mabye he is, maybe he isn’t - is his dick so small that he has to try to use bani’s name to gain some kind of ‘authority’ over me? - I didn’t reply to him, just carried on playing my game - by the end of the campaign I had like 600+ XP points and 4* medic (+ eng and covert points) which might not sound like a lot, but I don’t go for 'em - I was playing just behind the front runners as a medic mostly.

Anyway, by the end of this thing it’s become clear that I’m not some n00b and this admin guy has been quiet for a long time - I left the server but I’ll probably play there again. It’s the attitude I don’t like - There are ppl on this forum who are very skilled and knowledgeable (and can spell) from what I’ve read who don’t feel the need to go shouting about it - not like some temp admin on a public server.

Perfecto thread.

Was banned last nite at 9:14pm for saying ‘twat’ on the SD Server. Why? A team m8 [Medic] was asking for ammo, while waiting for charge bar to charge proceeded to shoot me in the face 3 times… I waited a bit more, shot a bit more… gave him ammo… he ran away, didnt pickup the ammo and didnt bother healing me. So I proceeded with the ‘pickup the ammo you twat’. Note, this same team m8 was then warned 3 times on the next game when I rejoined, Oasis, for stripping health from players, and again, including myself with the same ammo crap… I didnt say a word.

Now, as you all know its run by eQ and SD (more or less some of the same peeps) but eQ take it into there hands most of the time. Now, not only was I banned from the ET Server, but also there #splashdamage on QNet only to be told by digibob it was because ‘he had a problem’ with me. Not even a proper explanation now was it?

But, apparently, and according to an eQ player it was because I said the word ‘twat’. So, I waited till next map and rejoined up to the server only to find, wait for it, the same player who told me not to swear and also said that was the reason I was kicked/banned, still no reason for the IRC Channel yet, abusing his mouth off. And, guess what, another 2nd member with the odd ‘more offensive’ word than twat, as well as another regular, who, excuse the french, proceeded to use FFS and Fuck 3 times in one sentence… and aimed at someone. And to top it off, that admin has now got me on ignore on IRC and was using the rcon say (Echos text to the server) to say that one of his fellow clan m8s (The first abusee) ‘sucks and that he is off for dinner’. n00b admins? Obv not the truth in most peoples eyes, but imho, it shows the same for the DevTeam which they work and the clan for which they play.

So, im either guessing that this thread will be deleted shortly when read by a mod… I’ll probs end up banned from ere too… and as usual, end up with no justification as to why, I was the one who was the ‘problem’. Obv the help I try to give to the people in the community and on this forum isn’t up to scratch and the only reward is punishment. wub

Also, please note I didnt start this thread… im mearly giving an answer to a question that was asked.

it’s quite hard to comprehend that something innocent like the word ‘twat’ (in context) can escalate to ‘fucktard admin’ or ‘the admin is a fucktard twat’ - sometimes worse.

I think it all begins when they use a kick/ban like some kind of strap-on for their ho’s to see. :bash:

Its their usual reply to posts about complaining. They think it makes them look cool to use the ol “its their server you have no rights, so why are you posting here. STFU noob” line.

A lot of people sympathize with your situation, but you wont really see them reply here because of the aforementioned forum goers put downs and occasional outright verbal abuse.

Actually we should have a ‘Name and Shame’ forum dedicated to preserving forever the growing number of shit servers and their IP addresses. Think of it as a public service - play on a server and get dicked around three times in one week, fuck it - name 'em and shame 'em. Petition PB to have their PB GUID banned - let 'em go rogue for six weeks. Admin the Admins.

It just occurred to me - SplashDamage could make a fortune out of game server administration certification - GSAC-ET for short. It would be like a six week internet based course where you could admin a ‘dummy’ server with bots, you know, get the hang of things. Installing ET on a Linux box with a kiddy-proof script would also be included with the course. You’d get a badge, a sticker and a little logo that would pop-up on the map loader screens to prove your legit. If you haven’t got the badge you can’t get PB enabled on your server - period. Certification cost $150 :slight_smile:

You seem to be forgetting that this is about the Devs server and not just some random clan server. Obv, you would have a point if it was the case, eg, clan members paying for it and players whinging who dont contribute… but, I wonder… I pay them back by writing scripts/news for the community, posting here and several other forums/gsp sites helping players, answering questions on irc/via email… now, ive started making a movie and 2 maps to see if we can boost its popularity a bit more than what was and is, a huge but slowly decreasing community.

Oh yeah, you dont pay for there hosting on this site, you dont pay there webmaster for creating these forums etc etc… stfu. :slight_smile: - Next time m8, please, read a bit, look about a bit then add your 2 cents…

Tell you what come and play on our clan server .We pay for it btw ( :stuck_out_tongue: ) but will still treat you with the 100% respect you deserve and you will allways have gg’s.

It’s usually not that hard to workout who the admin is.

Provided that the servers “local” guidelines are adhered to (Usually displayed on map load) i.e. No Team killing/Spawnkamping/swearing. (that sort of thing).

There should be no reason to /kick anyone. If people want to swear, TK, and SK, then change server.

I have found that allot of the younger players, and there are plenty, like the freedom of annonimity, and use this as an excuse to explore more “colourful” vocabluary. If the admin doesn’t approve of abusive language, then your f’d. We should try and remember tho’, that their are some young fellas/gals playin, and altho’ they know how to swear, we should not try and promote un-sportmans-like behaviour.

Unless hosted locally, servers can cost between £50 - £200 (UK pounds) per month, depending number of players and who’s hosting. This comes out of someones pocket, which they have to earn.
They do it to ensure they have a place to play publicly, with regular server visitors, in a game style that they wish to have running, i.e. Balanced and Fair or full on no holds barred.
They also provided those not in a position to have their own server, a place to play.

Players come and go from public servers, some come on and cause problems just for fun, and are id10ts. These players are the bain of Admins lives. I am not saying that anyone posting here is in that catagory. I have had occassions where 3 or 4 arsey players get together and attempt to ruin the game for everyone, this can put a guy in a bad mood.

Usually I find it a good idea not to call the “Admin”, reguardless of ability, names. You usually dont last long.

I don’t like to throw “This costs me money” in anyones face, but at the end of the day somone has to pay for the fun, and if you catch the admin in a bad mood, he may just type this prior to a /kick out of frustration.

Yes you will come across “new” admins, so you will will have the choice to grin and bear it or go elsewhere. Remember you have a choice.

I say give the admins a break. They are players too. They also want to have some fun sometimes.

Not all admins are the same, but they do have less money in their bank accounts on the publics behalf.

I admin a fair-game play public server, and have done for some 2 years. Some nights i just wanna play.

Isn’t this thread regarding ‘players exp’n bad adminning’ and not ‘admins exp’n bad players’?

All in all, im players are going to rent/buy a server, open it for the ‘public’ then they should know what to expect. Deal with it tbh and think yourself lucky your running an ET server and not a CS server… and if an admin is going to go about kicking/banning without reason or ‘cause they feel like it’, or ‘i dont want this guy playing here cause i say so’ attitude, then fuck em. They deserve everything that comes to them, cause obviously they aint thought twice before they went ahead with the server.

God knows how many people say “Hi I just got a server… how do I become a ref… how do i upload custom maps… whats pb? how i update it?’ etc etc…” If your willing to fork out money for a server before you know what to do with it, your being stupid. Im sure no ones went out and bought a bike before they knew they could ride it…

everyone is allowed to have a shit day and that goes for admins too. theyre not employees, its not their “job”, its their hobby too. you dont say he kicked you, so he isnt even “abusing” admin power - would you write such a huge post attacking somebody for being YET ANOTHER lame player?

btw I’ve seen servers calling themselves [FuN] that have (I think) nothing to do with the [FuN] clan, one of which was being adminned by far the worst I’ve ever seen.

There are plenty of wallies around running servers that are poorly or even, not at all admined.

I simply thought it was worth pointing out that it aint free for everyone.

If an admin is an arse then theres nothing you can do but suck it up and except it (continue playing) or join a decent server. :smiley:

why dont you guys just get on a new server, people get kicked from servers all the time for stupid reasons. it takes alot less time to just get in a new game.
