My feelings about ET beta

(Boltman) #1

Well… I didn’t like it. But instead of saying retarded things like OMG THIS SUCKS BIG TIME I’ll not go down that level but insted will point ET cons and pros and I hope you guys can fix the cons before release.

CONS:

  1. ET doest not look like WOLF. At all. And it LAGS.
ET looks different from WOLF in any way, maybe except each teams uniforms. But, ET looks like MOHAA and Battlefield 1942. Now lets stop for a little and think, how many of the players who purcharsed wolfenstein and liked it liked mohaa? Lets say 40%. Now how many liked bf1942? Lets say another 40% (do not stack the %… keep reading) now how many people purcharsed wolf and liked it? Roughly 95% (who buys games without trying the demo first? Well if you did and didn’t like WOLF, youre one of the 5%) So, which is best, make a new game that looks like every other game on the market or make a unique game, just like Wolf is?

With ET, wolf lost its uniqueness. Wolfenstein was a fast-paced, action-packed game, not even close to the bloody lag fest ET or BF1942 is. I have a p3 1ghz, with 512mb ram and ati radeon 9500 pro, and still my fps are horrible at 800x600 somewhat like 20, while at wolf I get 100+ on 1280x1024… and everything else on high. ET eats my computer resources like theres no tomorrow.

  1. Voices
Why not use original Wolfenstein voices? They were good… well at least better than the current voices. I don’t know whos in charge of the sound, but sorry dude you aren’t good enough for the Wolf standards. At least not now. Please improve or cut and paste the old voices. Also the sounds of the weapons looks like the ones from bf1942… if you are going to cut and paste any sounds, please do it from wolf, we want an WOLF expansion, not a free bf1942 copy.

  2. Grenades - better or worse?
I liked the idea of being able to throw grenades farther away… but they kick on the ground way too high… and keep sliding on the floor for too long.

PROS:
Exp and ranking system:
These were the changes that made me want to download the game before and keeps me playing it, its original, fun, an overall good idea. If you guys could do sounds just as nice as you did this system, I could even consider buying it (yes I know it will be free)

New menus and maps:
The new menus and maps, although they remind me a lot of battlefield, are very nice too, good job.

But still, if you guys pretend to realese this game more or less the way it is now, please at least remove the Wolfenstein from its name. Being a wolfenstein fan, I fell so offended with ET having Wolfenstein on it while it looks 5x more BF1942 than wolf. And I’m sure lots of other people think this too, well, maybe not at this forum but realese a public beta and you’ll see the reactions.

I feel exactly same as Boltman wrote.
People love RTCW because of speedy action.
But ET_beta ignores that.

It is so sad that RTCWET is loosing strong points.

I’d like to see more improvement on Official ET at lesat followings.
For my wishes. (Requst for Enhancement)

  1. give back the shooting rate.(mp40,Thompson)
    increase damage on sniping gun.

  2. improve voice chat (I want to hear more releastic acting voice not my grandpa’s groan.)

All in all though it really isn’t ALL that bad. Sure it don’t feel like wolf, but wolf is a classic, meeting that and trying too top it, is almost upsurd. You can’t recreate a classic. But hey i gotta give SD props though, it’s actually fairly descent (this coming from a long time and current MOHAA and BF1942 fan) it’s not quite like BF1942 (sorry but it’s not) but it is however like MOHAA. Which don’t get me wrong, that ain’t a bad game. Considering it’s free, and all, alone gets recognition, BF and MOHAA still cost anywhere up to $40, so if it’s like those games, it’s like getting a free copy of BF1942 or MOHAA :drink: .

No but really though i like the new features. Eagerly awaiting final release. And if this is any consolation, SD please, as a 56k folk, make some bots, please. (It actually ain’t bad for 56k folk though, but i’d rather have bots)

Mate very good post indeed!!! I was kinda worried at first that it was just me over reacting about the voices and all the above that you mention Boltman.
Thanks for re-assuring me. Still it doesn’t get rid of my disappointment though does it ?
 Get Wolftactics when it comes out. It seems to look like REAL Wolfy not like this one !
ET GO HOME !!!

(skybuck) #5

Hey dudes…

It’s much to early to say those kinds of things.

I agree with ya that ET is much much slower action passed than RTCW demo for example.

BUTTTTTT there are a lot of newbies currently playing… and most people still need to learn the levels…

So who knows… after some time it might be as fast action passed as RTCW is !

(skybuck) #6

Oh yeah…

The voice message keys/combination should have stayed the same as in RTCW…

Who ever thought about doing it differently is retarded :):)

But everything can be used too

(skybuck) #7

Anyway…

I think there are a lot of things still to be improved…

To much to mention here…

Hopefully other people will post more stuff to improve and the developers read it

(BoltyBoy) #8

Could you people please clarify what you mean about ET not being as fast paced as RTCW? I mean it doesn’t take a genius to look at all the new features we knew were being implemented and see that there is a much greater focus towards team work and tactical thinking - therefore a slower paced game! Like saying “Hey look at this car made or lead with a 1.0 litre engine - oh why isn’t this car going as fast as a ferrari?”

Or do you guys mean it’s slow paced because there isn’t much action going on? This is wrong as far as I can tell. It seems to me you are just as likely to come across enemy players as you were in RTCW!

(Noodles) #9

I think the gun rates are a major let down - especially the sten! If they were put back to the RTCW rates I’d even be able to cope with the gun sounds

(MuffinMan) #10

well lag hindered me from really playing yet but already got some impressions:

  • i don’t like the gun-sounds, escept the mg42, they all sound to me like the bubble-gun in earthworm jim
  • when lying on the floor with the heavy machine gun mounted, you can strafe sideways but you can’t turn your aim to some other direction can somebody explain to me why not?
  • voice-chats: why didn’t you just take the old voice chats and put all the new ones at numbers 6 and 7? as it is now i have to learn all new commands and i’m sure i will mix them up with those in rtcw
well without actual playing that’s all for now, more to come…

(Boltman) #11

Wolf: ET is a great FREE game but a poor Wolf expansion.
Period.

(shao) #12

i agree with some of the points your making… especially the switch from fast paced almost arcade style action of rtcw, to a slower paced type in ET, one of the reasons, if not the main reason people stick to rtcw is that it offers a more gaming oriented take on world war two, yet still retaining a sense of realism and the great possibilities for tactics and strategies.

it’s hard to say if the new class structure in ET will change the clan wars for the better. generally with teams of 6 i see the emphasis moving from engineers first, to medics/lt’s in rtcw, to entirely engineers, and medics. But, this can’t work too well for a couple of reasons… a) ammo, b) landmines. I think you almost need one of every class on fueldump to be a sucessful team, and that doesn’t leave a lot of room for differing tactics. I can only assume ET is aimed at teams bigger than 6, which is fine for public servers, but not so great for clanwars.

the other issues are pretty much cosmetic, the voices are laughable with most of the axis team sounding scottish, and the radio binds now offer too many options meaning i find my hands have to come of the WASD commands to use it effective (something i’m sure i’ll learn to live with).

But on the good side, the new weapons are great, the level is very cool, the objectives are a really nice idea, the tank shifts the battle through the entire level instead of focusing it on 1 or 2 main points of conflict as with many other rtcw maps.

my only real concern is that the weapon of choice for ‘lamers’ now shifts from the panzer to mines…

(skybuck) #13

I feel I have to apologize for this statement

It was a bit harsh… and it’s not me. But that’s what other people said during the playing… so there you go

(skybuck) #14

I also agree some voice message sounds reaaaaalllllyy stupid, dumb, weird ?

When I first played ET and hit the voice message button: ‘I need a medic’
or just ‘Medic !’

There was this voice who very calmly said ‘medic’ like he only had a little scratch on his hand !

So first I thought: ‘Oh how cool !!’

The scream must get a lot worse once you get real damage !

LOL !!!

Well nothing like that !!! Even when you get wounded horribly the voice message will still say with a very calm voice: ‘medic please’

Lol.

Even if it did that now and then very calmly would be funny just to break through the same stuff…

But pleassssseeee add more drame to the screams and espcially the medic voice message… it just sounds so dull.

But it’s also kinda annoying to here every body call the medic everytime they get wounded.

It’s a bit more annoying than in RTCW I am not sure why.

(Noodles) #15

Because it’s such a naf voice that says it each time

I don’t know why, but I am really hating the Gun combat in ET! Between Thompsons and MP40 - it’s like we’re shooting paintball guns at eachother with the gun sounds…

(skybuck) #16

Well let me give you my thoughts on the wapens.

I played other games like alien vs predator 2 and soldier of fortune.

Those games used hi-tech assault squad like wapens… in a realistic way.

A few bullets and you would die. Sometimes only 1 or 2 shots and you could restart. I think that’s no fun.

I think it is good that RTCW is set in WW2 where the guns were less powerfull. Todays guns are designed to drop people in an instant. Like a drill.

Now having said that let me give you my thoughts on what I have seen and played/used so far in ET:

What I kinda like is the random shooting of the gun… it just sounds a bit funnier…

The old RTCW guns were very cool… they were like:

‘bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam, click out of ammo’.

Now the new RTCW guns sound and shoot like:

‘bam bam bam bambambam bam bambam bambam bam’.

I kinda like that !

But your comment about the ‘paintballing effect’ it true… it does feel like a paintball gun

Probably because of the sound.

(Noodles) #17

Exactly!

I feel as though the sound is badly affecting the impression of the gun - again, I’ve spoken about the atmosphere of the game…the sounds that we hear around in the enviroment is one major factor that needs to be looked into.

(FMa_StrydeR) #18

Here’s my pros n cons:

Pros:
The levels look alright, kinda mohaa-esque, but hey it’s WWII and so is mohaa.
Mortar is tricky, but fun once you get used to it.
The XP idea is brilliant, it really motivates you into doing your classes job.

Cons:
GAMEPLAY!!! It’s choppy as crap once you get out in the open. I have a top-of-the-line comp, and once i get outside… my fps gets choppier than a ginsu knife!! it’s just barely playable, its like the Q3 engine cant take the huge open spaces… i mean, my comp surpasses the minimum requirements, but it’s still slow n cruddy.
The player models, weapon models, and sounds are like mohaa and bf1942… i thought we were making an expansion, not little brother to mohaa and bf1942?! I liked RtCW’s deathmatchy, fast paced feel, but this is like “uh…wait for engineer to build bridge… get shot at… cant evade bullets…dead…in limbo line…bridge is built… move tank down road…get shot at some more…” i enjoyed RtCW’s gameplay so much more where you have to hide from incoming fire, line up with a panzerfaust and BOOM!!! gib the Axis to chunky kibbles!!! scurry on over to the forward bunker, plant dynamite, get out of the blast radius, wait a few seconds while fending off opposing engineers… BOOM!!! sea wall door is breached!!! capture the forward bunker and make your way to the war documents. chuck some nades up at the axis spawn… boom!!! take out some more nazis… jump down the stairs real quick, pump some axis full of lead with your colt and move on to the docs… grab the docs, chuck a nade up the stairs and gib awaiting nazis… scurry on up the stairs… plow down some more germans with your thompson and slide into the transmitter room for the capture!!! wooo!!! see?! i just excited from playing it out in my head!!! this is what we RtCW’ers are all about, originality!!! not some copy cat!! please!!! long live RtCW!!! bring back the old school gameplay!!!

(Noodles) #19

I agree - rather than change what was already a pure unique classic, why not just add the good parts that are in ET…

Bring back everything from RTCW into ET, and then just add the new things…

(skybuck) #20

Yeah… the current test is kinda laggy and choppy.

Reading post from people who have a top line computer tells me speed of computer is not the problem.

Since this is only the first test… let’s hope the second test will be better
