My ET pet peeves (some applies to rctw)

First let me say that I enjoy the game quite a bit and I think it’s the best thing out there. I also understand that this is a game and not a combat simulation. However, there are some places where I think the game could add a little more realism and fun without making the game tedious like combat simulations tend to be.

Bunny Hopping: Sprint jumping and strafe jumping. This is just silly. My proposed fix would be to have you jump further but then studder on landing so that you can sprint jump to cross gaps and get up on things but not increase your flat land running speed.

/kill abuse especially when combined with panzer. People know when they respawn. Players who pay attention can shoot, /kill, shoot again. I would guess a lot of players like this feature for this reason, but I think it detracts from the game. I would propose that suicides (dive on grenade, eat a panzer, /kill) make you sit out for TWO spawns.

General panzer abuse. I wasn’t around for WWII, but I gotta believe that panzers and bazookas were not as effective as in game. I would propose that you shouldn’t be able to move or jump between the time you hit fire and the panzer actually shoots. I would also propose some randomness in rocket flight (some combination of “drooping” and spiraling or statistical variance). It’s silliness that the panzer is more accurate than the rifles.

Inaccuracy of Rifles: The K43 and Garand should be MORE accurate than pistols and SMGs, not less. I can see maybe having increase kick and worse accuracy after the first shot. But if you are willing to kneel, fire, settle, fire, etc. you should be deadly accurate.

No accuracy penalty for sprinting and general lack of momentum. You should be less accurate while sprinting. I would actually go so far as to say you cannot shoot while sprinting (as in Army Ops). For those of us that have watched a gun battle from the sky, you see a bunch of clowns sprint-strafing in place while shooting at each other. Due to the speed of the sprint strafe and the lag on the server it’s pretty difficult to hit anything and it’s silly. I think having the toon pause when there’s a 120 degree + direction change would add some realism and probably make this silliness less effective.

In any case, some ideas to kick around.

hmm i remember in rtcw running around and watching my xhair expand as i started sprinting or jerking mouse from side to side… the change in size represents the spread increase and it takes skill to control it well  pretty sure is the same in ET

I think he’s talking in reference to other games.

Soldier of Fortune, Counter-Strike, Americas Army… running (let alone jumping) doesn’t just mess up your aim it nearly breaks it. Unless you’re at very short range, you won’t be hitting anyone while doing quick movement.

RTCW/ET just is a lot more laxed in terms of realism, which I can see as appealing to some but it just is another area that requires a bit less skill to get good at. I mean, in close or medium range combat the only thing you see decent players doing is running around and occasionally jumping while firing nearly full-auto. Long range, and accuracy modifiers are significant. At short to medium range they aren’t.

…i tend to find little point in your ideas

to me that game plays fine (thats imho)

and im not a noob…in my own eyes that is…youd have to ask other people if im any good

the things you mention such as the jumping etc are things u learn and are kinda features

the sniper rifles are fine…make em any more accurate any quicker and its all we’ll ever see… imo

Of course you learn to sprint strafe. It’s the only way to stay alive. The game mechanics are setup in such a way that sprint strafing and bunny hopping work. Smart gamers do what works. My point is that it’s silly - gunplay doesn’t work that way in real life and the gun play that results in game detracts from the experience.

When I’m talking about the rifles, I’m not talking about scoped behavior. I’m talking about unscoped behavior, esp as they relate to engineers. Go engineer, choose the rifle, and shoot a shot pattern at the wall while crouched. Then do the same for smg. My point is that that unscoped rifle should be very accurate for at least the first shot. That first shot should be more accurate than the pistol or the smg.

I don’t see anything wrong in liking the game the way it is. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Myself, I love the fast movement you get from sprint jumping. I’ve played a number of slower games, and TBH, I didn’t like the combat nearly as much.

To me, gameplay is what matters. I don’t care about ‘realism’. Sitting in front of a computer twitching a mouse is a long way from realism, and real combat with firearms is not what I would think of as fun.

If you are going to ask for gameplay changes, IMHO you should justify them by how they would make the game more interesting or exciting, rather than more ‘real’. In any case, it is almost certainly pointless, because splashdamage is unlikely to make large gameplay changes, and it sounds like they are not going to release the source to mod makes either. So there is 0 chance of any of the changes actually getting implemented in ET.

Who cares about realism for the weapons. Who cares about sprint/strafe jumping and bunny hopping.

It’s just a videogame, and one that is well known to be a more cartoonish, action orientated one.
