My convert map Den of Lions: Lair to ET

(system) #1

looks cool?

(Ubiquitous) #2

The sky you used doesn’t look like it fits in the map at all… I would change that. I played this map in RTCW, and it was pretty good.

(*[SfS]*OpTeRoN) #3

Use an ā€œsd_wurzburgā€ sky or ā€œsd_golrushā€.

BTW, I’ve found the wurzburg sky takes a longer time to compile because of it’s lightning.

(Stick-Boy) #4

is this out, or am i jumping the gun?

(RivrStyx) #5

Hmmm… i don’t think i was asked to have this converted. I’m going to convert DOL (Duel) after Resurrection. Whats with you guys converting other mappers maps.

Did you add command post, ammo/health… etc?

(*[SfS]*OpTeRoN) #6

Definetely convert Ressurection, that would be a great ET map. :drink:

(kevinski) #7

Yeah, but try OPTIMIZING mp_resurrection a bit. Seriously. There are some inexcusable FPS drops, and I can provide proof via screenshots.

(RivrStyx) #8

Its about 90% done.

Keviniski… thx…but don’t need proof. It drops as i told you before …outside. Theres rain and lighting in a RTCW map that drops your gf2 mmx framerate. I had a GF3 at the time and never dropped below 76 which i had capped. It was optimized as much as it was going to be in those outside areas with the lightning on building, ground and the rain the way it had to be done …as a matter of fact i was happy what i got considering what was going on outside. You’ll maybe get it one day what i’m talking about but obviously i explained this to you in the other forums but it didn’t sink in. I will get them the best i can as i did in the original in those areas.

So i assume you don’t play ET. The frames never dropped lower than what you see in say railgun…or radar. Also as i told you on the other forums… make a map yourself and upgrade your video card dude. Now stop following me around on forums and go bother some one else. Thx

Heres why this guy has annoyed me. Read his first line let alone the rest.

(kevinski) #9

Funny, considering the fact that YOU were following ME around and harassing me whenever I gave negative feedback on a map. You know, despite what you may think of me, I DO know what I’m talking about. Even though you don’t want my proof, I’ll take the liberty of compiling some. Why? Because I know the importance of consistency, and I’ll show you exactly how much mp_resurrection is lacking in that aspect.

As a explained before, yes, I play ET. Yes, I have problems with radar and railgun. No biggie. I understand that I’ll eventually need to upgrade my video card to play newer games. Not now, though. Why should I? There are mappers that can create maps that run VERY WELL on my GeForce2. The new church map, as well as Carnage Canyon, runs very well on my old-ass video card.

I realize that the church is mainly indoors, but it definitely looks fantastic. It’s a good example how something that looks good can play just as well. Yes, I’ll admit that I’m not into your style of maps. Honestly, Callfire confused the living **** out of me. I’m into less complex maps, I guess. However, mp_resurrection doesn’t suffer from the same confusion aspect. I feel that it’s a pretty straight-forward map, and it could use a little tweaking here and there.

I know you don’t want my advice, but give me a little time to compile some screenshots of what I’m talking about. I remember mentioning before eventually getting framerates of almost 90 on mp_resurrection. For some reason, though, it dropped drastically in places, and NOT because of the rain and such that you’re speaking of. I’ll post again in a bit.

(kevinski) #10

Okay. Here’s the proof you didn’t need:

Now, note that this little demo of sorts takes place all within about…oh…10-20 feet. Note that, in the first pic, I’m standing in front of a doorway. My resolution while playing RtCW and ET is 800x600. This image hasn’t been tweaked in any way, although it’s been compressed at pretty low quality courtesy of Photoshop (level 4, low). While playing RtCW or ET, I never lower the texture quality, because it never makes more than 2-3 FPS difference. I have 512 MB of RAM, so textures do little to hurt my performance. My FPS is at 90. GeForce2, I love you.

In the second pic, I’ve walked forward a bit. I’m almost standing in the doorway that I was looking at from the first pic. Look at my FPS, though. It’s now at 25. Now, I realize that rain and such is being rendered outside of that wall. I also realize that there are ways around that, though. I mean, all I need to see is a few walls, right? Why is my GeForce2 unable to display a few walls in a map built by a master mapper without struggling?

Hey, let’s walk forward a few more steps. What’s that? My FPS dropped to 15? No way! This map is created by RivrStyx, reknowned Quake III mapper. He knows what he’s doing. I refuse to believe this is happening, and with up-to-date drivers, too!

Here’s a tip for you. Swallow your pride a bit and admit that this could be remedied. I’m sure the ET version will be far more playable. Why? Because ET’s rain doesn’t stress out my GeForce2 anywhere near as much as the rain in mp_resurrection. Also, I’m confident that you ARE doing some tweaking on the map. Just try not to alienate people with older video cards. I mean, why do you think the ET audience is larger than the RtCW audience? Do you think it might be due to smaller budgets in some peoples’ cases?

(kevinski) #11

By the way, despite my seemingly brash remarks, I honestly hope the creator of this thread doesn’t actually go through with the release of your map. I understand how it is to have someone steal credit for something I’ve done, and - regardless of how little you and I get along - I don’t wish for anyone to have parasites stealing from them.

As for my map, be patient. I’m still contemplating twists in the gameplay, although I’m almost certain I’d like to create a beach-style map. I’m a huge fan of mp_beach, but I also understand that mapping involves more than placing a bunch of brushes similarly to those in mp_beach and calling it a map. I preplan a LOT, so - when I finally release my map - don’t be overly harsh with your review simply because I’m the one making the map.

I’m not following you around. I’ve been using these forums for a while now, and the only reason I came into this topic in the first place was to check up on who was releasing Den of Lions. I knew that you were the creator of Den of Lions. I saw a name that wasn’t RivrStyx as the author of the topic, and I became a little concerned that someone was stealing someone else’s work.

Just one question: Did you release the source for Den of Lions, or did this person decompile your map?

(RivrStyx) #12

Don’t know what to say. It doesn’t happen to me in that area… nor anyone ever mention it there. Alot of fights happened there…lol. Of course the outside is beyond that door. Maybe your card is picking up some of the rain and lightning out back and is choking…lol
Thx though

You got a weird sense of things. You came into a thread on RTCWfiles announcing i was releasing Res for ET and bashed it …then played innocent as if you were helping. Like i told you there …if you don’t like it don’t play it (play themaps you mentioned)… but don’t come into a thread announcing its conversion and run your mouth without having a clue. A RTCWfiles admin even pointed it out to you as well as all the posters. Like he said …i can’t wait to see your map… Btw …that wasn’t a feedback thread … it was a announcement thread for those that liked it. The original thread when i released was for that. Now move on.

I assume he decompiled it

(kevinski) #13

Actually, he pointed out that BOTH of us were attacking each other. I’m not trying to act innocent. Just compare the two topics (this and the one on RtCWFiles) and see who’s still doing the name-calling. As I said, I hope this conversion doesn’t take place (by sin, anyway). And you never answered my question. Did you release the source, or did sin decompile it?

(kevinski) #14

Nevermind. I just noticed that you said he decompiled it. I ignored that part, thinking it was just a sig or something.

(RivrStyx) #15

I’m capped at 125 and didn’t think i needed to uncap it…lol. Got the same with the GF3 i had at the time. Its time to move on and not think your older video card is going to be catered to. Games are evolving. Like i said upgrade…i think its time. RTCWfiles admin and the other posters were talking to you …not me. Read again… I think i wasted enough time on you and your problems. Pride had nothing to do with it.

Oh and the gun wouldn’t add any frames and thats at fov 110 so it would be better frame rates at 90. thats 1280x1024 btw. GF2 ultras had no problem when testing. Anything lower i really didn’t care about for this map. Callfire and DOL ran on those fine.

(kevinski) #16

DragonFlyRTCW was only talking to me? That’s funny…

Sorry for not saying this sooner been @ work way to much :(. Anyways I suggest you two stop attacking each other I have people watching my back to make sure stuff like this doesn’t happen & the comments remain clean & kid-friendly. If it continues they will ban from commenting…

Thanks!

(RivrStyx) #17

:banghead: :bash:   :drink:

(kevinski) #18

It’s obvious that this argument will never end, since we both said some things that were a bit out of line…and on public message boards, yet to boot. So, I’m gonna call it a night. :moo:

(G0-Gerbil) #19

Heh this is kinda fun

kevinski, did you try lowering your texture size just for the purposes of this map? I had a gf2 too (hence why church was so optimised - I had a crap card to run it on meself :)). What I found was generally that texture size didn’t matter, but on a few maps, with lots of textures, if it had to draw too many at once and had to resort to paging in and out textures each frame, it dropped to what you might see there. How much VRAM do you have? Everything to 16 bit too but you probably do that already

Some rather amusing asides:

  1. MML Church was , ā€˜ironically’ enough, inspired by some of RivrStyx’s thinking. While not a huge fan of his maps themselves, the way he makes his maps very ā€˜vertical’ was something I definately borrowed for Church. Most RTCW maps are very flat - ET ones more so (talk about going backwards from Q3  ). RivrStyx’s maps make you move your mouse up and down, and for that alone he should be thanked

  2. Poor old Marko’s maps run fast cos they have bugger all detail / texture usage in 'em  Might go track his tutorials down for a bit of a laugh

  3. Rivrstyx - bit of a pisser someone just copies your map without permission. I got it on footy, but that’s hardly the same as I gave out the source and expected it to get ripped (or rather didn’t, cos it wasn’t a particularly good map to start with!).

  4. kevinski - try this - load the map up in devmap mode, then type the following:

/cg_draw2d 0
/r_showtris 2

This lets you see what else is drawn - I’m guessing once you move forward that little bit it’s drawing all the outside. You might also want to do:

/r_speed 1

(I think) and compare figures with other maps. Basically try to find out what is causing the huge FPS hits - even if Rivr ain’t that interested, it’ll help you in your own mapping efforts making it run on your old card

My GF2 I had to have all detail low, everything 16bit, 640x480, and I still used to get like 20fps on assault \o/

Finally, optimising is bloody hard - you have to understand fully how portals / hint brushes work (and MANY people get it wrong, and will helpfully tell you how to use them wrongly), and how to make your map VIS well (since that’s the stage that decides what should be drawn in any given position). It took me many moons to work this out, but once you manage it, you’ll never look back

(kevinski) #20

I actually used to use lower detail for textures in-game, but - like I said - I never experienced any significance in FPS. I have a 64 MB GeForce2 MX card, and - coupled with my 512 MB of RAM - it handles textures quite well. I realize that the GeForce2 doesn’t exactly handle smoke and such all that well, although I must admit that the card handles RtCW SP and MP quite well with the pack-in maps.

Of course, I’ve compared the builds of the maps between RtCW and ET by studying beach (from RtCW) and goldrush (from ET). The difference is absolutely insane. Goldrush is so much more complex (but it runs very well on my GeForce2). My GeForce2 tends to really choke on radar and railgun, of course, although it’s still quite playable. The only other problematic map for me is battery, probably due to the terrain at the beginning.

I’ll try what you said about those console commands, though. I’ve always wondered how people got the game to draw the wireframes like that, as I’m assuming the /r_showtris 2 command does.
