My concerns about cheating

(SPYMAN) #1

Since this game is using VAC, Iam afraid it goes the same way as homefront, where cheating destroyed the whole game and playerbase. Cheaters destroyed all servers and many users quit the game because there was no kick/ban option.

Please (!) add a votekick/voteban option, as it is the best way to deal with hackers. I really beg for it.

People can abuse that though. Like if they just think you suck a little and don’t want to play with you. Or they don’t like your stupid screenname. Or they just want to kick everyone in the room to be a jerk.

(RAAAAAAAAAAGE) #3

I don’t know what VAC is. Is it something that hackers can easily use to cheat?

I barely played homefront online cause i just didnt like the multiplayer, so i never got to see this cheating. But i trust SD to figure out how to deal with the hacking community.

VAC is what destroyed TF2 and Counterstrike. Oh wait.

(Seyu) #5

Valve Anti-Cheat, it works alright.

(Jess Alon) #6

Instead of this short statement could you give us a brief history? I figured games just die when they are “cool” anymore.

(tokamak) #7

Well it all started with Valve introducing VAC, from there on it brought us to two amazingly popular games being what they are today.

I would be very suprised if there was not a votekick option modded into servers very quickly, if it’s not included in the game.

(Avoc) #9

VAC has nothing to do with lack of kickvote/mutevote or any other types of admin options. The developer programs those features into the game, or a later admin mod.

(tokamak) #10

Yeah don’t forget, everything that is wrong with the game will be magically solved with mods, so no need to worry ever.

(Diablo85) #11

VAC for some reason seems to do its job ALOT better with first party Valve games then with other games. I have no idea why though. Doubt Valve gives an inferiour version of VAC to other developers. Maybe it needs to be maintained and other developers are too lazy to do that.

For what I’ve understood, the thing with VAC is it won’t kickban somebody as soon as he cheats. It will gather infos, names about players cheating, and then “retaliate” by banning whole groups of cheaters. That means you can play against cheaters, yes, but on the long run they tend to disapear.

And I think SD planned to give tools to act againt cheaters you would encounter, can’t remember if they talked about which kind of tools though.

This is correct and in Homefront, the ban took a very long time and the servers were plagued with hackers. I just hope it’s faster in Brink because I don’t want it to be destroyed by cheating retards.

(Seyu) #14

Anyway, I think cheating in games less rampant than people make it out to be. In BC2 you always get someone accusing someone else for being a hacker in almost every match.

(RumRunner) #15

solution to hackers: find servers that are properly admined. get to know the admins. add them to your steam friends list, contact admins when hackers are present on their servers. thus maintaining a pleasant environment on servers you frequent, and improving the quality and reputation of that server as a whole.

reason things happened the way they did with homefront is i believe that they did not allow third-parties to make their own dedicated servers, various clans and groups being able to run and admin their own servers is part of what keeps CS and TF2 still running and popular as proper adminning can be done by those that run the servers.

(JeP) #16

That’s indeed a good solution.

I usually play online with friends, didn’t meet that many cheaters, and every time we do, we just go look for another server. But that happend several time in homefront, less these days, and before in countless hours spent on TF2 or BFBC2 I didn’t see one in action, I think, at least none to be remembered.
Cheat has never been a big problem to me.

(LyndonL) #17

The best thing about VAC is everyone playing a Steam VAC game has a unique Steam ID. If you are caught cheating that id is banned and the cheater must buy another copy of the game (on another account) if they want to play again. That kind of limits the people who will cheat since they can’t circumvent it as easily.

(Mustkunstn1k) #18

My experience with VAC for TF2 - Awesome.
My experience with PB - Horrible.

I mean not only are pb games full of cheaters (unless you have a good admin on the server), but pb itself has often kicked me for no reason.

(SockDog) #19

To follow on from this, you also have the fact that people invest time and money into their Steam accounts. Someone with hours upon hours in a certain game or who has an extensive catalogue is going to be less likely to risk getting a VAC ban on record than someone who has nothing to lose and is bored of a game.

Quoted for truth. There are also clans who ban people who they think are hacking with the only evidence being they were owned (never happened to me personally, not that good). No big deal though, you just find a good server and play there instead.
