My comments on the ET QW demo

(Gringo) #21

Fair enough u dont like the game, no one says u cant. I just feel that it is slightly egotistical of people to come here and let all and sundry know their opinion on QW’s. No one cares but by expressing it here u are being antagonistical and encouraging negative retorts!

Do you really think they SD didn’t make any profit on this game??
THAT is kinda ignorant don’t you think?

so basically because SD created an awesome game that attracts a lot of people who play it in a community, you are supporting it by playing it as well (for free). your attitude sucks.[/quote]

(Joe999) #23

no, the ignorant thing is that you don’t think they deserve support (financial or in numbers of sold games) for what they’ve done so far for the community.

(-SSF-Sage) #24

Why should he play the game to support SD? If he don’t like the game, that’s fine. Personally I won’t even try the game, because I know it will capture my mind. I wanna stick to et. :poke:

(Joe999) #25

it’s not about playing, it’s about supporting by buying … and about the way he expresses himself on the forum of the people who created the game that he has been enjoying for years

(kamikazee) #26

No offense, but this part of your post is highly irrelevant. ET:QW is a prequel of Quake 2 and Quake 4 story-wise, but that’s about it. If this game were ET:WW (Wolfenstein Wars), I guess it would still play the same if SD wanted to do an asymmetric game.
It seems you don’t like the setting but struggle to express it. Anyway, it’s the gameplay that matters.

“supporting” SD by modding is a noble thing, but you can’t prove how that gives SD money. Don’t forget the devs still need to pay bills like anyone else…

Anyway, this discussion is going nowhere. I guess we’d better stop posting about this and leave it as it is. See you later, hopefully sometime soon.

(P4nth3r) #27

I think they deserve all the support in the world en I DO support SD, just not with money. ^^
I support them to be one of the milion players of their game and adding parts/servers for that game, do you really think a server is free?
What if nobody would setup a server for ET? How long would the game have lasted then??

(ayatollah) #28

And what do SD get from you setting up a server?

End of the day, you haven’t given the game enough time. It is different from W:ET but is from the same vein, it has more in common with W:ET than any other game and I think they have done a really good job of updating the ET franchise. Not liking it because of the Quake universe is a bit silly, seeing as it plays nothing like any other Quake game.

Look folks the fact remains that just because Splash Damage put out a great game for free and some of us loved it, does NOT make us obligated to buy their new game. It’s that simple. We as customers are under zero obligation.

Would it be a nice way to show support? Absolutely, but there are other ways. If he goes to another forum and hypes up Splash Damage and even ONE person who has never heard of SD or Quake Wars comes over, checks it out and decides to buy it then that is equivalent to him buying it. That’s support. It’s the exact same as any of you buying the game even if you didn’t like it. I’m not saying that’s what’s going on but I’m just trying to show that there’s more than 1 way to show support.

While I don’t agree with the way he expresses his dislike for Quake Wars, it certainly doesn’t make me like the game any less. I love it. Regardless, the point I’m trying to make is I’m not a fan of his posts but trying to justify why we should all buy the game just because we liked ET is silly. If you’re a fan of the developer because you liked any of their previous games chances are you’re going to have a bias towards them, and try to get others to see the light and understand why they’re such a good developer. That’s enough support on its own.

That said, long live the limey brits at SD.

(kamikazee) #30

I agree that spreading the word about W:ET or ET:QW is a form of support, but it is hard to prove that it actually supports SD in the long run. It might be, so it’s rather dubious, but it’s still welcome.

The fact that W:ET players should buy ET:QW because they got the first game for free is a personal decision. It’s never said you should, but I think it’s the best way to show that you support SD.

Hi Splashdamage!

I have played the Demo now and i can only say: Very good work! The game makes fun and i could not stop playing it. And i feared i could not play it on my “old” system but it runs quite fast!

Great game! Thank you a lot and i hope this time you can earn a lot of money for your effort!

I’m sure lots of people think this is a great game and some of my clan are playing it allready. (as I notified them about this game)
It’s just that I can’t buy this game because of my believes.
My believes are, a 1 and a 0 should be free, and then a milion 1’s and 0’s should be free too.

(kamikazee) #33

I’m all for open source and free software, but money needs to come from somewhere if you’re a software developer… So I’m afraid this vision is slightly naive because games can’t rely on paying for support only.

(P4nth3r) #34

Look where EA have brought us when you only think about money.
I love SD because W:ET is free and I wished more people would think like that.
Take a look at all the modders that do all their work for free.
It IS possible, it’s just that not everybody has other motivations then money.

Greetz W2E

(kamikazee) #35

Comparing to EA is another irrelevant thing. EA is mostly a publisher, and by itself not just a game developer. But you’re right, their marketing strategies are evil.

I believe SD didn’t get anything for W:ET other than what they got from Activision during the development.
W:ET was released because it was a working product without a single player component, even though it was meant to be a commercial game at the start of the project. Just to state that the game was not intended to be free. (It even was considered an RtCW expansion in the beginning.)

In the mean time, I heard the team survived by working on other games like a few Doom 3 multiplayer maps and other stuff.

Now to get back to the point: AAA game-development certainly is a full-time job and money IS of concern if game development is your primary job.
Modders on the other hand can do stuff for free when they do it in their spare time, but the quality is mostly lower than that of a real development team (of course, if the quality is of a similar level, the mod takes ages to be released).

(SoulRebel) #36

I have no problems spending 50€ for a game when the game is great. I am developer too and why should the work not be paid?
On the other side, when the game is buggy, bad and not playable (like most of EA games) i have the decision NOT to buy the games.
You need not buy a game you dont like! But when you enjoy a produkt, why not honour it?

(Nail) #37

gee, you’ll pay big bucks for your computer, same for internet access, but not for the games you play ? seems rather odd to me

information should be free, not someone’s work unless they intend it that way
