@ all. My nick is pack, not packman, i changed it 10 months ago but I was registered here already by then.
@ Captain Obvious, yes indeed I am giving criticism to a leaked version of a beta of a game. I think I stated that clearly. I also said that it had good potential and I actually had fun sometimes playing it.
My concerns were objective as well. If a map is not used in competition, it’s likely it will not be played on the “good” servers. An example is depot, which is mucho fun, but is barely played on my favourite servers.
I don’t mind actually if you like the site were I am a freelance poster, or not. Basically, we are just trying to do our best and that’s it. There are other sites too, who will provide you with good content as well as xfire tries.
In english:
http://www.rtcw.jolt.co.uk
http://www.swertcw.com
and some others who post more or less the same.
@Weaver. I let that to the moderators of this forum. If they think the content is inappropriate or off topic, they are free to remove it.
Basically, If you should escape your monolingual world, you might see some forums were ET is discussed in more than one reply and more than one thread. If you join IRC, I think it will be hard to find someone who hasn’t downloaded it. I’m just not a hypocrit and post it here (maybe stupid, but not hypocrit)
Let’s just say that this was a sneak preview RTCW users got, before the whole gaming world was allowed to play it. Which might not be a bad thing. When it will be released to public, a lot of sites will be ready providing information and instructive screenshots about the game. Also, on most servers, there will be people who will know the ropes of the game, which makes it easier for others to learn.
Don’t get me wrong, I did not leak ET, and I didn’t upload the leak to any ftp. I was not a betatester so I couldn’t have it. I just right clicked the oh so tempting link that appeared on irc. I’m glad there are people who can resist but sorry, i’m just not one of them
with regards,
pack
Packman, the gameplay is most important, it’s got feck all to do with maps going on good servers if they aint comp’ standards, bullshit, market garden isn’t used in comp’s, and it’s the dog bollocks, :notworthy: (praise SD great map folks) comp’s allow for 6v6 3v3 and 1v1, i don’t play that, rtcw is a war game and war is not fought with 6 players, yes smaller maps demand less players, but i don’t think that ET is aimed at pro gamers alone, i play rtcw at least 4hours a day, and its all for the fun and banter, i love playing, and playing for money IMHO ruins the game, i dont tweak, and i hope there is something going into ET that stops it happening, it’s cheating, i don’t care if everyone does it, that doesn’t make it alright, i play as it is meant to be played and still own many of these so called “pro’s”
keep up the work fella’s and get ET out for the peeps who await the finished product
Did I just hear in that post that you are still playing ET beta. If so, now that you know its illegal, why dont you take it off your CPU?
Btw, I havent downloaded the beta version, I did see it on FTP links, but I checked here to see if it was offical first.
Right, now as u can see this is my first post here, however, I’ve been reading the forums on a regular basis, so don’t think I just hop in to give me useless opinion
Yes, it’s useless, yes I registered for it, but I wouldn’t go as far as typing in a full url only to put my stuff here ;-).
I personally wonder what real rtcw addict can resist the download of ET leaked, especially knowing there’s a server out there to play it on. The leaked beta is probably a hit on lanparties too, and in fact why shouldn’t it be ?
Okay okay, it’s illegal I guess, but so’s warez, and lanparties are full of warez. Nobody would buy a game just to play for a weekend right ? However, most of the people playing the leaked ET now, own a full version of RtCW, and they paid for it. Many would do so again if the game was worth it, which won’t even be a problem since the game will be entirely free it seems
The ‘its gonna be free’ part makes it quite difficult for most players to see this leaked version is illegal anyway. Can’t really blame the players for that can we ? I find it quite a bit exaggerated to say a RtCW fan should not download this version out of respect. It’s very good of those that can resist the temptation… but I can’t fault the people that can’t (well, I just mean I can perfectly understand why they do so, after all, most of us are just little children when it comes to a game ;)).
I do NOT agree with sites publishing the leaked version or links to it. I think public support and spreading should not be tolerated. Sites should not do this. We can’t stop IRC ofcourse, and discussing the beta itself can not be avoided either, but moderators can (and have done a fairly good job sofar i think) in squashing down the posting of links or files on fora and sites, punishing the people that posted them.
It IS true in my opinion that this leak can benefit the developers in some way. Lots of people playing it, and probably quite some useful feedback if they are willing to read all the comments (also alot of useless talk, that’s probably why they usually work with a ‘qualified’ beta test team).
Can’t stop the leak anymore, I doubt this will have that big an impact on the release of the official test. I think most people will download again anyway, think of rtcw mp test 1 and 2.
So dear Captain, I find your reaction quite … stoopid actually (you are fully entitled to think equally so about mine). Also I believe there is no belittling of Splashdamage in any way here, nor of the game. Commenting on the beta should be allowed (no ?), even though the comments might be irrelevant. We do have to wait and see that’s true, but waiting… isn’t it EXTREMELY hard to do ?
Anyways, the real fault lies with the initial beta tester that leaked the info. HE is the guy that did the true irresponsible thing (and it probably was not a mistake). It’s like downloading warez, downloading warez is not good, but can’t be stopped that easily, most of us don’t mind downloading warez once in a while for private use, but that does not mean most of us would deliberately spread an application we bought or were betatesting does it ? I know I wouldn’t do that (in fact I’ve been involved with a couple of beta testing programs in the past, and have received many preview codes of games, don’t remember ever letting one slip out of my grasp, but I can asure you you’ll find illegal stuff on my computer, I’m far from sacred ;p).
As for the Xfire thing, I believe Xfire is a good community site still, just because ONE of their staff members made a mistake does not make the whole site bad. The mistake was corrected and pack wrote a nice and proper excuse about it. All Xfire should do in the future is pay a lot more attention to their crew, they probably didn’t expect this amount of success anytime soon either.
And as for pack personally, I know he has done many good things for the community, he’s one of the few known (at least in the Belgian scene) and respected RtCW-ers in many ways. He’s not even the leader/owner of Xfire, but somehow it seems to be ‘his’ any way.
All my respects to pack, I hope he’ll keep up the good community work
(Yes, I’m secretly in love with him, ever since we were in the same clan
Oh yes, we’re in the same clan, BooZZe to be exact, do visit http://soff.fragland.net and http://boozze.iglobal.be to find out how we disrespect the RtCW community all the time).
Bugger.
Cool down m8, don’t tell me that all your software is legal 8)
I have been working with computers in the real world for more than 10 years, and it’s very hard to find a computer with legal programs only!!!
I have to agree with Pack, and CoBraLorD, what harm can it do if someone downloads it when it’s already all over the place…
They don’t loose any money since it’s free anyway…
Just my thoughts…
Hum… Thinks I wonder if anything on my computer is illegal. Are hacked pentagon papers illega?? What! who said that!?
I think you are missing the main cohesive point atm.
How would you have felt if a half finished buggy version of yawn was released to the public and hosted online before you had wanted it to be?.
What if everyone had then downloaded it at that point, taken one look and said, “Pfft - Pile of poo that is - I’m not gonna bother with that anymore.”
They would have missed out on a superb proggy as it turns out, but you get the drift tho…
The idea of the beta testing is that such bugs and tweaks can be made BEFORE the general public gets to make it’s all important first impression of the game, That’s what has been screwed over due to the leak.
Nobody will be able to stop the overflow of downloads once they start on irc etc etc. This doesnt mean you have to go with the flow.
I personally wonder what real rtcw addict can resist the download of ET leaked
I love Rtcw to bits… And that’s why I’m waiting - Because I don’t want my view of the game, tarnished by a buggy prerelease version of code or any additions or ommisions that are a bad call (remembers antilag ;/ ) .
Anyways, I think the only thing here getting my goat really is the fact that once you set yourself up as a cummunity site, as Xfire has done. You have a certain responsibility to set the standards. I know as you have said already the post was removed and an apology was posted etc etc, But further than that - If peeps in the irc chan see you saying “I think it’s ok to download the beta and play it on servers…” then they will think - Well if he says it’s the right thing to do then it must be.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion - I’m not trying to change yours - I’m just trying to explain mine to you.

Well, I think most decent RtCW players that played the ET leak will download the official ET test again. As said, there was quite a big difference between mp test 1 and mp test 2 of rtcw, concerning certain gameplay things.
Only a pretty dumb guy would make a final judgement based on the beta (and I must admit, a lot of ppl do take too harsh conclusions indeed). That’s more or less the whole idea behind preview codes of games too, sites etc get those to try out the game, but should realize it’s not the final game, and many things are subject to change still.
But on the other hand, one can imagine some very smart marketing dudes only sending out so-called beta/preview codes to the big magazines. Causing those magazines to be forced to review an unfinished product, thus (in most cases) making the judgement about it less fierce (hypothetical speaking, by NO WAY implying there are any companies doing this, and definitely don’t think this is in any way comparable to the ET situation… i was just mentioning ;)).
It’s true it’s a bugger that this unfinished product got spread, but it isn’t gonna change my view of the final though (on the contrary, got something to compare with already, see what positive changes they hopefully put in). I must agree with you a lot of people will not think like this, the greatest problem being that this beta leak is very close to the final release.
Take doom 3 alpha leak, waaaaaaay before the release of the final game, don’t think that one will have any impact anymore on the final.
Concerning Xfire, well, no site should approve of the spreading of the beta. And as such, the moderators of the site have a job to do, on their site they should not tolerate the links etc in my opinion, but they are entitled to voice there own preference in certain cases. It’s a thin line between saying on a site you disapprove, and not saying you approve.
Endless discussion anyway, I agree this leak should not have been though, and I wouldn’t (like most people) have gone out of my way to get the game before its final release.
Unfortunately (mainly for Splashdamage), it didn’t work out like it was supposed to. Best way to stop this leak ET fire is by starting another fire with the official ET test
@Capten. For yawn we actually did a public beta. People were free to download it, but we posted it on a forum were most people speak dutch (because we know them most), so it didn’t get spread by then, only a few foreigners tryed it. But I can see your point
@ StoggHoggly. Yeah I do agree marketgarden is a great map for public play and I sometimes play it. But you have to agree with me that if it’s played correctly, it would never end, no?
If I say I play it competitive, I’m not saying I’m a pro. I’m only an average player, but I enjoy being active in a clan. (And the clan where I belong to is average as well :p). I’m also aware of some of the concerns of other people who play RTCW competitively. Let’s just say I try lobbying a bit
First post here, just to weigh in and say, yeah, I shouldn’t have, but I did grab the ET beta. And probably would again. And loved it to bits. Sure, it’s only a beta, and stuff needs work on, but it made my weekend (how sad is that =P).
Lots of discussion in IRC about it, almost all the feedback has been positive, apart from some rather stupid comments about lack of documentation (damnit! Why don’t ALL my warezed games come with a full manual as well!) and lag to overseas servers (I’m amazed he can play wolf AND manage to breath at the same time).
Keep up the good work Splash Damage, show me where I can send my donations to the pizza and caffiene fund
NN
yeah agree, apperently they all played it on usa servers and thought it was ET that was lagging, heard the same comments everywhere
Who ever was in charge of employing/recruiting the actor who did the voices should be shot at dawn!!! Never mind dawn shoot them bloody now. I am soooo disapointed if these are to be the final voices.
If they are I dunno whether I will waste too much time playing it to be honest. “Wah too” ? Is supposed to be v27 “Where to” ? And sounds like a Japanese gentleman
I think that the reason to this being a free game is because it’s not good enough to charge people money for it."
So, Wolf original still for me.
Sorry to be so negative but it is only MY opinion.
Play it yourself and make your own mind up but don’t forget my comments on the dodgy voices. Hmmm, maybe there will be a voice_pak that could be installed to play the original RTCW MP voices and not the ridiculous ones they have created for ET.
maybe it is your opinion, but have you ever heard of respect and such things ?
try it yourself, and we talk again !
btw: I played the leak to(o), it was fun
when the official test comes out I’ll post my remarks
fretn
maybe we’d just need to get used to the voices, though i prefer the original ones
(which is out of the question i believe. No textures/voices can be copied from original rtcw since et will be free to everybody)
:bump: Of course I have heard of respect mate. But to whom am I supposed to be showing respect to ?
I’m not posting here to have a pop at ppl I am merely giving my own opinion, for whatever it counts lol.
I just genuinely feel very let down by the poor aquisition of actors to the do the voiceovers mate that’s all. And of course the new blooming keys to learn [sighs] a let down that is all !! :moo:
Let’s just wait to see if the voices are different in the final no ? Must agree at the moment they are more annyoing and less understandable than in the original wolf, but in the end sound paks will probably be possible. Anyway, wouldn’t go as far as shooting the guy responsible for the voices, just a minor butt spanking will do g ;p
I will help !!!
[/quote]
/So we agree then lol. Well fank god someone is understanding where I am coming from.
:drink:
They should have kept the other guy in a job though by asking him back to do the new ones. Maybe his asking price went up ? lol
that’s when it falls to the better team play, attack squads, fire teams, defencive positions (Sewers for allies, exit from the north courtyard for axis) ppl charging down the shelled street and throw smoke or fire panzers although they get the “you’re a pointwhore” or “n00b”, however annoying they can be sometimes, are essential to the defence of the sewers/stop allies coming from the sewers (depending on who has the flag) and with me and the Cap’ playing no objective is safe :drink:
p.s pack what clan you with m8
