I have an at home wireless network with a cable connection. My friend brings his laptop over and we both play in the same servers at the same time. Dunno what your problem could be, I didn’t have any problems here. Firewall maybe?

its the same with all q3 engine games, but it is easy to fix by useing differnet client ports. just create a shortcut to the game on one of the computers and at the end of the target line add:

+set net_port 27961

I had the same issue. The problem was that the NAT feature of my firewall (the feature allowing the sharing of one connection by several computers) had a limit set to 128 connections per NAT client. This number is exceeded at the beginning of the game when you are pinging all the servers with the in-game browser. I have upgraded the limit to 1500 and that solved the problem.
Look at the error log for your firewall if there is one, it should help you find the cause of the problem.
