I think arty shouldnt be too bad as long as it’s sw or 1st map in campaign and maybe even less spammy if heavyweap restriction is strict and stickycharge 2. Maybe less in its favour is the nearly pointless ET sniper, it’s a bit small for ET standards and the average ET player seems to be rather a lot less tactically minded. Ignoring the bugs like server crashing if you re-take the flag… :wink:

might be ok for smaller servers.

actually there is another assualt developed by priapismus, who is currently busy exchanging the desert theme with some snow,
as he said he gets tired of all those sand in his boots. i’m quite shocked there’s yet another assault in progress, so priapismus
might want to hurry with his release.

problems with that map, Im not sure if anyone else experianced it, but it crashed my server 2 times, i had to boot it…

I’ve not found a download site yet (well, not one that lets me grab it straight away).
Is it a direct copy or more of a homage that matches it closely?
If it’s a direct copy what’s the problem? Decompiling the original BSP gives you pretty much the entire map and from there it’s simplicity.
Presumably the people making these maps aren’t exactly skilled mappers or they’d be doing original work?

edit: G0-Gerbil its a carbon copy, with the sole exceptions of ammo/health CP’s in the gate area and on allies route to the towers.

might aswell just post my comments - the first three are essential and cant really put the map on a server without them being fixed.

Bugs:

  • Recapturing the flag exits the server, with “G_Scripting: setautorespawn couldnt find target”.
  • cant climb the ladder in the allied spawn? also it’s missing textures or something on the guard rail thing on the top of it.
  • missing textures on the allied side of the underground door, below the hangar stairs, allows people to see through the wall into the other room, and another missing texture opposite allows people to see up into the hangar.
  • In RTCW, you could blow up the speakers and stop the music with a close grenade. Useful to allow you to hear footsteps etc more easily.
  • The axis side gate (the fixed-open one) is a bit fubar.
  • Fuel truck closest to axis 1st spawn is not solid, neither is the driver cab bit of the second one (nearby). Similar problem with the truck holding the rocket at 1st axis spawn

Opinion:

  • too dark?
  • filesize isnt horrendous but 11mb is pretty big for players to download while playing, any way to cut down sounds or textures or something?

Overall though, very nice conversion, even kept in sneaky things like the hidden airstrike target above axis area.

BTW I see that the Allied compost is right at the top of the ladder next to Allied spawn.
I’ve seen this in a couple of maps - what’s the point of having a compost in a position it will definately get built and almost certainly won’t be destroyed?
Might as well just give that team the bonus throughout and be done with it…

allied CP maybe better inside the hangar? if rtcw is anything to go by control of that area frequently swaps. otoh, the ammo/health where it is now is more vulnerable. I’d probably leave em out altogether but thats me.

He is aware of all the issue posted and the release is an Beta… He is still working hard on it. There is no download site since it was only put up for some small testing. IF you like to talk to him he has posted a thread here…

Hey felas,

I didn’t post anything about it here cause the last time I mentioned anything about MP_SUB, the thread was deleted…

I was aware of some of the other mp_assault maps out there, I just thought I could do it better. Beta 2 is almost ready, all the above mentioned bugs are fixed. And the map lighting is more like the original.

This for me has really been an incredible learning process. The original mappers were very skilled indeed. Some of the things they have done were quite resourcefull.

Erm, well, considering I believe you just reverse-engineered the original I’m not quite sure how you can do it better. Although given the bugs in your version, it makes me curious what the other total conversions look like :slight_smile:

I’m still waiting for someone to say ‘OI! stop accusing him you filthy scum-bag, he rebuilt it from the ground up with his own sweat and blood! How dare you accuse him of blatantly ripping off illegally an RTCW map using RTCW textures into ET!’.

Feel free to slag me off, but that’s probably why your MP_SUB rip-off thread was deleted :confused:

All I’m saying is:

I’m not trying to hide my identity, or take credit for work that is not mine. I am attempting to create a decent port. As far as rtcw textures go, their are plenty of them already in the ET pk3’s. Not to mention plenty of Models (the cart, and a ton of lights immediatly come to mind -I’m sure there are more)

So… I can use rtcw textures/models in maps for ET, but only the ones that where used in the maps that were released w/ the game (hence their inclusion in the .pk3). That make sense to anybody else?

By doing it better, I was reffering to doing a better job at converting it. A point you touched on in a different post that I quoted above. Maybe you think its ok if you say it, but not me? I was not suggesting that I can improve upon an already incredible map, or its skillfull creation.

Regardless:
I can only assume that your beta1 releases are perfect. Stop trolling by insulting mine. We all can’t be as perfect as your comment suggest your work is on its first public test beta.

Is it murder? Highway robbery? Terrorism? Am I making money? Have I kicked anybodies grandmother in the process of converting a map many of us love and enjoy to be played in ET?

As a side note/question:
RTCW’s SDK was released a long time ago. Does that change the light any of this is painted in?

*I’m broke, in case anybody thought i was somehow making money at this.

I’m not sure I follow you, since I’ve not seen the map itself. Are you talking about their inclusion in the main ET pk3s or yours? If yours then you don’t need to - textures in ET don’t need to be part of the pk3. I do know most of the Assault textures are not in ET though, since I’ve loaded Assault into radiant using the default ET textures. If you’ve searched and replaced them all (which I hope so since it shrinks the filesize) then you won’t get such a perfect copy of assault. But even so, the map ripping is still the same deal.

Indeed, but my initial point in this thread was that RTCW do NOT convert well to ET, it’s a different style of game. People converting the maps are hoping the genius of the RTCW maps will automatically fit into ET. But it’s just not going to happen, and we end up with a cheapening of the original map. Quite frankly, if you want to play RTCW maps play RTCW. There may not be many people playing it still, but there’s enough full servers to get your fix.

The point is, we’ve now had conversions of many of the RTCW maps, and they spectacularly fail to show up on public servers. This should tell you something.
They can never be used in any official competition because of legal reasons, so they are quite simply not being played.

I guess overall my main point is that I wish people would stop converting RTCW maps and use their knowledge to create new maps. If you know how to compile and build a pk3, and know how to edit the map and stick in composts and stuff, then why not work with your clan mates to create a new clan-and-ET-orientated map that can be used in competitions? Being part of a clan immediately gives you excellent testing options, as well as a better understanding of what a map needs to be clan-playable.
Just use your ability to benefit us all and give ET an extended lifespan.

I agree with you GO-Gerbil. Problem is, more than a few ‘think’ otherwise. They believe copyright infringement only occurs if you make money off the stolen work. Is it so hard to ask the original author for permission to convert it?? And the follow their wishes??

I guess if I see a car with the keys in it, I can ‘borrow’ it and no charges can be filed against me…as long as I didn’t make money from ‘using’ the car… :disgust:
