Mortar Question

(|Robot|Bender) #1

When you look at the map when using the mortar, you notice several yellow crosshairs on the map. I am assuming that is the area where a FO called in a strike, and the Mortar crew can also join in.

THen on your reticle you see crosshairs, etc.

Can you use these hairs to lock on asap to the target area, or do you have to shoot and feel your way to the spot.

If you can uses these hairs, someone please explain what you are looking for on the reticle to make it work. I can’t seem to figure it out.

ps: All you mortar haters out there, stay outtta my damn thread.

You can use the croshairs to lock on horizontally to the area where an artillery strike has been called, but not vertically. You’ll still have to feel out what the elevation should be.

It would be nice if it could do that, but since there’s already going to be shells landing there, it doesn’t really help much. If you manage to line up with that coordinate, anyone who’s there is probably already dead, or the enemies have fled the area. It’s nice to know that that is a spot that should be targeted maybe in the future or something, but really isn’t that helpfull.

What WOULD be cool is if the field ops could maybe right click in their binocular view simply to ‘mark’ a target for anyone using mortars and not actually arty strike it. That would make that little reticle more usefull IMO.

I just wish that one could get more mortar rounds per ammo crate from a field ops. One or two rounds is not enough. I have actually had some really generous FOPS that haven given me as many ammo crates as it takes to get me up to full ammo, but it usually doesn’t happen. /kill or eating a nade is about the only option for re-ammo-ing yourself as a lonely mortar-er.

Thanks, that actually helps a lot.

The reason i was wondering is that last night on Gold Rush, i actually took out 36 peeps in a row by bombing areas with past strikes. Strike is over, people rush across thinking its clear…but its not.

Of course, i wasted 3-4 rounds just zeroing in on the spot. And the fact you can’t get fully revived in ammo sucks 2.

I usually camp out near a ammo area to keep myself stocked as much as possible.

Then, when no ammo is avail, i go in search of the enemy and pickup a gun/drop the mortar and go in blazing. When i die, i start the bombing all over again.

It is lonely being a mortar gunnar, but it can be a game winning position to have (if your good).

Just got the best compliment on my mortar skills, the opposing team tried to kick me 3 times for using the mortar at ^4ECGN - Enemy Territory|100ms|63.210.56.115:27960

I’m a mortar Hoe

Mortars rock. I can’t play them for shit, but I tend to FO a lot so I can obliterate peeps, and whenever I see a camped mortar soldier they become priority for ammo packs. Mortars can really mess teams up when used appropriately.

I need to figure out the whole targeting thing. I can adjust based on the last hit, but how the f&ck do you target to begin with?

Practice. Read ET4dummies. Search the forum for tips.

I had written 1/2 a page on it but ya know the above just really summed it up all to well.

Ahh if only more fldops were like you! On unlimited life servers, I find myself having to /kill or kamikaze every 2 minutes in order to get ammo. On a limited server, it just sucks royally–I usually end up running around looking for a dropped panzer to make myself useful until I finally die.

Most fieldops on pubs simply don’t want to hand out ammo. Granted, if they are still pumping out 1/4-bar / single-round ammo packs, I want them to level up before they waste time on me. (Considering it would take them 4 full bars to refill a mortar, but after l2/l3 I can pump out rounds twice that speed.) Sometimes, after they see my name coming up 4 or 5 times a shell, they start to clue in–but not that often.

I need to figure out the whole targeting thing. I can adjust based on the last hit, but how the f&ck do you target to begin with?

Just find a good spot or two on each map, and practice. Once you know what you want to hit, you can just go back to the same spot and you’ll know where to go.

I also believe that two ticks on the mortar = 1 grid on the map.

As far as ammo goes, hang out in the back by a ammo dump and use it to keep you loaded…

I wish you could leave the thing setup whilst you get more ammo…HAY DEVS!!! CHECK THAT IDEA OUT!!!

LOL! that would be cool… run over pick up some mortar rounds… come back to your mortar… hop on, and it’s still set to the same coords that you were just firing at.

Problem is, some lamer would probably hop on your mortar while you left it and move it on you lol.

I guess we can only hope that an upcoming patch will make it so that the field ops can give out more mortar rounds with each ammo pack.

Well the horizontal is easy. On your command map, there is a little triangle attached to your marker that shows the direction your facing. Just turn until it points to what you want to hit. Then, just make a guess at the elevation and fire. See where it hits and adjust from there. It should only take around 2 shots to get the target.

A good idea is to set up next to some identifiable terrain feature, so that if you die, or have to move to get ammo, you can set up next to that same feature and you know that your previous mortar settings will still work. That should save on the couple of shots for targeting.
