More than one player cant connect to same server, Will disconnect the first one.

Hello.
I have just re-discovered this game again. Used to play it with my son, (8 years old at the time) when it came out. Now i want to play it again with him (now almost 18 and totally kicks my ass), and now also with my 8 year old daughter. We are 3 persons connecting trough a Cisco gateway (UPC Ireland) on a 50Mb connection.

I have tried to google this but wont find any good info.

The problem we have is that as soon as any of my children tries to connect so same server as i play on i will get disconnected, only one can stay on the same server, as soon as one more of us tries to connect the first one will be disconnected.

I dont remember it being like this before when we used to play, then we could be maybe 5-10 people in my house connecting to same server and play.

Is there anything new that i dont know about that needs to be dealt with?

All info and input is most welcome and appreciated.

Hello Peter,

this sounds alot like a security mechanism implemented by some mods. Can you check the cvar “g_maxConnsPerIP” on the server you play on ? On some mods this cvar might have a different name though.

A default value should be 2, but it sounds like it is set to 1.

Only a first guess though. It might be also another problem, but this would be a first thing i am looking for, as this cvar simply defines how many IPs can connect to the same server.

Thanks acqu for a quick reply.
I might not have explained proper, but this is when we are trying to connect to any servers in the server list within the game.
If i find a server on the internet i want to play on I can log on and play my self, but when lets say my daughter also wants to go on to the very same server i will get disconnected as soon as she gets logged on to it.

If that is what your answer is referring to i will need to ask you how will i get to read out the info from that particular servers “g_maxConnsPerIP” ?

Yes, this is answer i am refering to. It is not guaranteed though that you will find that cvar, because it might have a different name, but it is worth a try.

Which mod does this server run ? If etpub, then you can expect to find the setting of that cvar by starting et.exe, then click “Play Online” at the main menu, then find your server and click “Server Info” Tab. It should pop up a menu like the one you see in the picture i posted above. There you should see that cvar and the value of it. If it is 1, then this might be the problem and answer is, you must ask server owner if he can increase that value a bit. It is simply a server setting which prevents you and your son and daughter to play at once. Only 1 per IP can connect to the server, if that cvar is set to 1 (hope i explained that good enough).

If you cannot find this value, then something else might be the problem. But it is always worth a try and i guess i was right with my shot in the dark :slight_smile:

Might be duplicate GUID kick. Have you downloaded etkey files from the etkey.org for all installations? Also be sure to enable PunkBuster so that you will have individual GUIDs.

Now i understand better how you mean. I will look into if that has been the case.
If so, just keep on looking for servers that has a value of 3 or more and then we can play.
The key thingy i never heard about before either, I will look into that too.
I feel all in a sudden like such a newbie at this, seems like it was less complicated back in the days when this game was released and me and my friends played this or Americas Army every day.

try go onto a server with silEnT mod or the new ETPub 1.0.0 mod

both mods should have no problems with you not having a guid (etkey)

Try use this server as test for you ip 81.91.242.31:27967 I love to play with my kids myself so ive set our servers to have atleast 5 ppl using same ip, which that server have.

not an ad btw, but if you guys cant play on that togehter then the problem is somthing completely different :slight_smile:

I will try that during the day with the kids and see how it goes.
I did do the manual punkbuster install and also i did download an etkey, so hopefully we have covered all the angles now.
Now i just need to figure out why i dont get the game in widescreen on my laptop, but thats at least not very important.

that was on a lan, dosent seem relevant in this case, i could be wrong tho :slight_smile: often is, just never likes to admit :wink:

I have tried on a few servers now, including the one was mentioned above, and it worked for us to connect together, i have before then also set up with the new patch 2.6 and that also updated PB and i have made sure the etkey is in place. So i hope it all will work for the best now.

I managed to figure out how to edit the cfg file to get my laptop to actually use widescreen in the game. Funny thing is that when i installed the game on my daughters laptop it instantly set up the game in widescreen 1366 x 768 without me have to do any changes in any settings. But when i installed it on my laptop it was only displayed in 4.3 no mater what i tried in the settings. How could that be?

Anyway, now it all seems to work, and we will be playing together.
If i might ask also, Would you recomend any servers for us? My son is quite good, i am kinda ok, and my daughter screams as soon as she sees an enemy :slight_smile:
Any server that would let us play even though we are not that good and have a total newbie with us?

Just go on the most popular if you are lazy and try to find where you like to play as patriot says. You can also use filters to find specific countries/mods/whatever else that may interest you. Hope you find a nice little home somewhere :slight_smile:

I will try the lists you mentioned, my main concern was actually to find a place where we wont get kicked or banned for not being good enough, specially with my daughter in mind. But we will work it trough the lists and see where we ends up…

Just don’t go on etpro servers and you should be fine (about the being too bad stuff)

Have played a few hours today at the qube severs (Silent) mentioned above. Was quite a few bots but that’s alright since it never gets to little players then. It was good also cuz then my daughter got the time to practice it a bit, she is not used to fps games, she mainly play sims and minecraft, But after a litle while she got the hang of it. She even started to record some in fraps :wink: Will let you know if it hits her youtube channel then you can watch an upcoming pro. :slight_smile:

All in all it seems to have worked out for us now, so again, thank you all for all your info and inputs, will still try some more servers, but now we know it works.

Nice to hear u solved it :slight_smile: and yeah we have a max off 10 bots on the server so when its a 5v5 bots are gone

btw i just bought myself a new pc but im in not finished setting it up, but i got on the server as Bowmore when you where on, tried to talk to you

if you did but just dosent remember howto respond, then just press “T” ingame and you can write messages :slight_smile:

Oh, ok, sorry i didnt notice that any one was talking to me, to be honest i played on my laptop without a mouse (just the finger plate) and was quite busy trying to manage at all. My XP was probably not going very high, but nice to know that its saved. Will surely come back and play some more, will buy a new mouse today probably. Will keep an eye open for any incoming messages. :slight_smile:
