I seem to remember one of the interviews mentioning that the day/night lighting was dynamic, so a map set at sunrise would go from dark to light. OTOH, that might just have been a dream

i think that was a surgestion sum1 posted in this forum but hopefuly someone up at SD will have been watching :drink:

Yeah, i think also the suggestion was have the day/night rotation set with the server time. So if you’re playing on a server at 11pm at night, the map will be at night… if you play at 3pm during the day, the map will be daylight.

i think thats a pretty bad idea realy cause for many there will only be sertain times they can play so you end up never realy geeting the full effect. and alos differnt players need to have the same effects of it becomes unfair

even basing on server time is pretty bad since the lowest ping servers are prob likely to be close to the actauly player times

perhaps the server can set its ownt time, the server can set a specific time that never changes (per map), random times are chosen at the start of each map, mabe allow the server to affect how fast time progresses 3x normal time?

The server could have a, say, 4-hour based day cycle. That’d make it pretty interesting.

I don’t know how SD is doing their lightning or which modifications they did to the D3 engine, but people from the “Doom 3 can do it too” project on doom3world.org (goliathvt) had created a very cool day cycle proof-of-concept map that handled the sunlight realistically (the sun moved on top of the sky and shadows followed it etc). It was pretty nice, and something only possible on games with real realtime lightning like the D3 engine uses.
