MODs Code Sources not provided...

(BigBear) #1

Hi !

Just a remark concerning some important things that nobody is speaking about… !

Sure I can be wrong but…

Many Mods are based on ETPub

Coming from the work of the Etpub’s TEAM :

Tony J. White (tjw)
Joshua Menke (Zaedyn)
Michael Edvalson (miguelsuave)
Matt Stutzman (stumpy)
Travis Maurer (dvl)
Gabriel Magaña (Calzonzin)
Thomas Bezold (Tommes)
Olivier Reboul (boondaaw)
Lasse Krogh Thygesen (Chruker)
Chris Bajumpaa (forty)
John Garcia (PerroGrande)
Marc Herrlich (Magik)
Christopher Lais (Zinx)
Wesley van Beelen (KillerWhale)
Wyatt Berka (Catscratch)

As already said : Many “New MODs” are based on ETPub…
But many Mods Coders seems to forget… to share the Modified code source OR
Oh! Surprise they have stopped their mod or they have lost the Code Source, or the name of the MOD has simply changed! …

All of that not seems really fair… !
Sure we can understand that some MODs can require (small or) perhaps big changes…

But at the end ? If a new MOD is based on ETPub…
the minimum of respect for his previous authors is to provide the new code source to all the WET community

Because if WET is still alive : it is because the ETPub’s Team have decided to provide ETPub Code source !

And for Sure we must not forget to thanks a lot Splash Damage & ID Software for W:ET

In all the cases, Good End of Year to All & Thank you for your hard Works !

Yes, etpub deserves a hell lot of a credit, simply for being open source and that others can learn from their source and that they provide also the means to base your code on it. I think that is what you want to say.

The problem that sources are not open is what you will never change. Reasons are many for having a source not open. Technically you are not even “legally bound” to open up your source code if you base it on etpub AFAIK.

I can also understand why developers want to keep their source closed. Simply because they want to enjoy their hard work for some time and not want some other dude copying it without respect. This is like mental rape of some sort and i can totally understand that. What is a bit of mystery to me is that even when you seemingly do not care for ET modding anymore, then why you are not leaving your work for others to learn from etc. That is what i kinda do not understand really.

Like acQu said, there’s no need (legally) to publish source code based on etpub as it isn’t GPL/whatever. I can understand why people don’t want to do that. Silent for example has their own guid system & all the hardware ban stuff. If you just share the source cheaters might be able to figure out a way to go around them. Probably similar reasons for other mods to not release source code.

Thank you for your opinion

What I speak is in general : I target nobody… it is a general aspect, and sure many cases can be different.
My goal is not to offense anyone, I just have wanted to speak what I have in the mind that “disturb me a little”…

As you said Silent MOD try to propose a quality MOD it is why they work to have something that really propose a MOD that could be as possible “better Stable and functionnal”, with real support in the time.
It explain why for many persons, Silent seems to be the actual main reference quality MOD for W:ET (and will certainly replace dying ETPub).

Sure we can enjoy that many coders are proposing MODs public we must grant them for that
Source code aspects is a problem, more when they stop their MOD production and support…

For example I have invest time and work to test and to use Alpha versions of some MODs, and it is sometimes a problem when they stop the MOD when they are “in the middle” ; unfinished :frowning:
I know some other masterfloor that complain also for that point…

But as your example, some can also think to remove “secret security parts”… but sure hard to reclaim the last version source while the MOD is not stoped (while curently in development).

In all the cases thanks for the Mods Coders for their work, but please think about to provide the last version of the code source to W:ET community when you decide to stop your mod

Thank you

Mmh, am I the only one with a noticeable FPS loss and some little lags like the TAB menu display under silEnT? I even crash on Fuel Dump Christmas (See)… This is the single mod I have to lower the settings in ET to keep 60 FPS, while under ETPro I have 120-125!
