Modest First Map

Hey Guys,

Mapping is hard work! Anyway, maybe this thread could be like a little blog also for my map project and problems :S.

So far i got to here:

my first problem is when i press L to go to limbo Et freezes… and i really want to run around inside!!! (i cant even fly around as a spec, only turn on the spot)

my max mins are a square and way way outside the limits of the skybox, and i got blue red spawn and info player death match.

another problem on the side is that my sky sucks; what can i do to make it better? and also over half the textures in radiante show up as shader image not found: both in the map, and on the texture bottons…even caulk. Though my terrain is textured in the game even so… weird.

to get a texture for common textures download common.pk3 (see attatchment unpack into etmain)

different skies can be found in skies and skies_sd, but only a few work for instance:
textures/skies/sd_goldrush
textures/skies/sd_railgun
textures/skies/sd_batterysky
textures/skies_sd/sd_siwasky

as for your problems triple check the map coords as I’m fairly sure that’s what causes maps to crash when press L

But not being able to move as spec leads me to believe that maybe you start positions are stuck in the floor / wall / ceiling?

Nah, my ET has never crashed because of that. I’ve always waited until I’m 90% done with a map before finding the maxs and mins coords.

Make a fresh installation with 2.60b. Will make a lot things easier.

Speaking of patches… We need people to stay on one so we have a bigger community.

If you want a larger public for your map (say double the size) I recommend just using sunplug with radiant 1.5 to set the map coords. Game wont’freeze anymore after that :wink:

we’re not telling him to forget about map coords since you need them for more then just that, but if you map on 2.60b it’s less hassle in the early testing phases.

Thanks Guys!!

I patched up Et to 2.60b, and downloaded the common pk3 and everything works in limbo, (sunplug is a timesaver!!). Plus now i am using Siwa sky things are looking bright!

After a run around a rescaled things abit, and also realized i’ve made a small but strategically multi-faceted map!

Now I am making tunnels, but im not familliar enough with radiante to make em from scratch so i made them in easygen and i am importing them into map. So one question really, can you make a group of brushes that you select as a whole? Like bind a key to select them all at once rather than clicking over and over on each brush? Erm maybe a radiante tut would be a good reply.

select brushes => func_group and then you can select whole entity, this func_goup entity does not affect anything ingame!

Yes great! A map only working on 2.60b! This map will only be played on 2.60b servers yippie! That means half the community can’t play your map yipppieee!

Great that people wanna pus to 2.60b, I would like to see 2.55 die to and go to 2.60b. BUt it’s not as simple as that. You can better fix that 2.55 map issue at the beginning then finding it out at the end :wink:

afaik, it will be playable on 2.55, 2.56, 2.60 and 2.60b

Quick update on this project.

Getting scale right is so hard. So I’ve been looking at the released offical maps to get a sense of scale, and omg the amount of script, hint, and technical brushes is intimidating. Fueldump is a real masterpiece! Must of taken a year of solid work just for the brushes and script. Making your own models, textures, sounds, pff… can barely imagine how much work goes into a map like that. I’m happy i can just use pak0 stuff.

Anyway… Scale in the sense of actual size, plus the time it takes to do the objective, all that stuff… anyway i revised my map on a basic level. I still want to edit everything, but if i do that i will stuck at stage one, so now i’ve cast the mould i will stick to this terrain.

Now, all i need are some missing tree .md3’s. Some tutorials just say unzip pak0 and everything is there, but its not… I need winter pine trees badly.

And my churchill is also naked, as are a number of models. any hints?

Hey, i already found some great download databases. My god, how i have shamelessly downloaded gigs and gigs of prefabs i dont need. and yet… can’t find winter pine trees anyware.

In this tut: http://www.pythononline.co.uk/et/tutorial11.htm it says:

“click misc/misc_model and a window will open. Double-click mapobjects then trees_sd, then tree_a.md3.”

I don’t have .md3! :frowning: Is that guy just lucky and everyone else has that model in pak0? Whats wrong my Pak0? Should i redownload Et or something?

Like i said: Nada… So reinstall et? or maybe reunzip pak0? whats up?

(What i do have is palm leaf on the floor, and i have been tryng hard to make turn that into a tree want to see?)
