Apparently Quake-style railguns are real, after all…but in real life they are more like the Dora Rail Gun in ET than a rifle…

Nothing like guided artillery with a 100 mile range…better place some dynamite on those controls, stat!

Maybe it’s due to thermodynamics, with the air being compressed rapidly in front of the projectile, or else perhaps it has a chemical booster. I honestly was just surprised to see that such a thing actually exits…

According to Collin Babb with the Office of Naval Research,
“The flames are from pieces of the projectile disintegrating; the 7-pound slug is jammed so firmly between the rails that when it’s fired, pieces shear off and ignite in the air.”
