I’m fairly new to modelling for games and I’m currently making a model of the L96 (bolt action rifle) however I’ve come to a point where I’ve no idea how much detail I should put into the model, obviously you can show the appearance of a lot of detail though texturing but its one of my problems I just want to put every bit of significant detail in as I can and I don’t know where to stop 
Specifically I just don’t know how much detail to put into the firing mechanism (and the bolt its self), will a cylinder do? should I hollow it out where the bullet will go and pop out when reloading? you get the idea.
