MIX EM UP MAP PACK!

(The_Jesus_Zeppelin) #1

ok, i work at a cyber cafe/pc gaming center thingy (whatever you want to call it. and im having a huge problem with hosting games with et. certain computers are played on more than others and have more custom maps and after certain maps are downlaoded that pc can not host anymore, i had heard it was cause by the 1.02 patch but found that was a buncha crap when i realoaded et and the 1.02 patch on every machine we have in the gameroom, and then i figured out little by little that it was the cutsom maps that were messing me up, so when we tried to host from one of the computers it would freeze and we would end up having to force shut down and restart that machine, and if we hsot from a machine that is able to host but has certain files on it that others dont they have to downlaod it and then all the computer have that file. and from what ive heard about the custom maps, the pk3 files kinda work as one big one they give and take little bit from each other so if you just go in and delete one fo the custom maps the game doesnt work oh so well anymore, i dunno if thast true but it would kinda make sense as that is another problem we are having. but the real question behind all of this is if anyone has had a simalar problem and if they had a list or somthing liek that of a list of custom maps that work with each other and make the server host still able to host, we are most likeley going to keep having this problem until our clan server has been built which in turn is sponsered by my work, so we have no actual eta of when we will be able to have a constant pure server running all day and nite.

please help, im kinda in a squeeze with this.

Here’s a tip:

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

Add those to your message… Maybe then somebody will even try to read it…

might use the Enter key every now and then too :stuck_out_tongue:

How does that work regarding software licenses, is it expensive?

(Majin) #5

I just spell checked, edited, and fixed that entire post to the point that I could read it.

Here is his problem:
He work at a cyber cafe that runs a number of gaming PC’s that have Enemy Territory on them. People download a lot of custom maps to them, and this in turn sometimes crashing ET (to many pk3s can do that), and with lesser amounts of pk3s, causes all the other computers to download these new maps if the computer with them hosts a game.

Solution: DONT LET PEOPLE DOWNLOAD NEW MAPS!

Then, when you can, get a dedicated LAN server, or possibly internet server.

Also, he had another problem, he is listening to a bunch of rumors and beleiving them.

Y’Know… I know my first post here should be some mushy “Hi! I love your game…” or “Panzerspammers suck!” post/thread, but after lurking for a few weeks, I had to respond with a big :blah:

That’s just too funny! I know it’s an oops, but still…

Oh yea… Hi! I love your game and Panzerspammers suck and all that jazz…

im on a crap keyboard. i posted this at school and we have the worst computers in the world.

but does anyone have an answer to the question, or does everyone just wanna be an ass and make fun of the fact that im stupid.

(SCDS_reyalP) #8

Must be truely bad if it prevents you from using paragraphs. :moo: Really, your first post bordered on incomprehensible.

but does anyone have an answer to the question, or does everyone just wanna be an ass and make fun of the fact that im stupid.

Majin did, assuming he translated your question correctly.

Another suggestion would be to have two copies of ET on the computers. One clean one for hosting and another one for playing.

(Schaffer) #9

I have heard that you can only have a certain number of PK3 files on the machine your are hosting from. I have hosted many times and if I have too many PK3 files then I find that ET will crash on a map change.

The simplest way to get around this is to either strip out the PK3 files that are not required for hsoting or to combine the contents of the PK3 files into one file. The second method is not recommened since firstly you are taking away from the map developer and secondly if a PC needs to download the map then they might be trying to go a 60-70Mb file which 99.9% chance of it not working.

You should also ensure that all custom maps used distributed to all the clients are make them available via a seperate http download which is a lot quicker.

(Majin) #10

When someone can’t write a coherent post and they have no reading comprehension, maybe a method of communication based purely off those two things isn’t the place for them. :moo:

Missing one ‘s’ while trying to help is hardly the same as making a completly unreadable post asking for help.
And… LMAO his keyboard/computer makes him not know how to write a coherent post? LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO

majin: well seeing as i cant tell people to download maps because the people that are work there, and are higher up in seniority than i am, so i cant exactly tell them what to do.

I think your question’s been answered, so just keep this in mind: you’re asking for free help from people, and the very least you can do is make your request readable instead of forcing people to work around your laziness as well as your problem.

(Schaffer) #13

Maybe his question and grammer and spelling and etc… wasn’t the best but it was not impossible to read. Give him a break. At least it wasn’t gobbly gook foriegn speak.

(Oral B) #14

er? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

gobbly what? and english isn’t foriegn speak? well, I’m sure you read his first post and then read Majin’s post then went “ah.”

(Oral B) #15

Here’s a translation of his first two “sentences” in jive. Maybe it will make more sense. Yes?

“ok, i work at some cyba’ cafe/pc gamin’ centa’ thingy (down low, whateva’ yo’
ass wanna call it. Homie don’t play dat. an’ im havin’ some huge bug-up-da-ass
wit’ hostin’ games wit’ et. Ah be baaad… certain doodads be played on mo’
dan otha’s an’ have mo’ custom maps an’ afta’ certain maps be downlaoded dat pc
kin not host anymo’, i had heard it wuz cause by da 1.02 patch but found dat
wuz some buncha crap when i realoaded et an’ da damn 1.02 patch on every
machine we have in da gameroom, an’ den i figured out tiny-ass by tiny-ass dat
it wuz da cutsom maps dat wuz messin’ me down, so’s when we tried t’ host from
one o’ da damn doodads it would freeze an’ we would fat-lady down havin’ t’
force shut waaay down an’ restart dat machine,an’ if we hsot from some machine
dat be able t’ host but has certain stashs on it dat otha’s dont they got’ta
downlaod it an’ den all da doodad have dat stash.”

An alternate solution since it is quite fun to play custom maps ;), create a simple batchfile that you can run every now and then on the PCs, looking somewhat like this (replace paths as needed) :

----------- etcleanup.cmd-----------------------------------

@echo off
cd “\program files\wolfenstein enemy territory\etmain”

rem delete all pk3 files regardless…
del *.pk3 /q

rem copy std pk3 files from backup somewhere on your network…
rem this includes pak0.pk3, pak1.pk3 etc, check up which are default…
copy \yourserver\yourshare*.pk3 .

rem delete mods, these will autodl anyway…
cd “\program files\wolfenstein enemy territory”
del etpro*.* /q /s
del shrubet*.* /q /s
del ET_TourneyMod*.* /q /s

rem end file
----------- etcleanup.cmd-----------------------------------

Note: Test on one machine first

In addition you could also schedule the batchfile to run say once a week or once a day (night) depending on how often you’d need to clean away maps today already.

Question .How can a crappy computer and keyboard result in bad grammer and spelling? It’s like saying sorry I can’t spell to day as my pen is playing up.It’s not my regular pen as that is in the garage getting filled up.So once again I ask you to be patient whilst reading my posts. (Apologies if you find this offensive  )

(Ragnar_40k) #18

Why do’nt create our own custom map pack? Let people vote for customs maps that should be inside this new map pack (the maps should be in final state and the mapper should agree to bundle it into a map pack).
The, lets say, 6 most wanted maps are packed together into a single mappack and this file can then be distributed over the internet by rtcwfiles etc.

(SCDS_reyalP) #19

Please don’t. If you do this, then everyone will end up with the individual maps, and the freaking 50 meg map pack. And then the _final version of the map pack, and the version of the map pack someone put their own campaign file into… and so on.

Your not relation of snoop doggy dog, are you?

great post, lmao
