Minimum System Requirements

(LyndonL) #21

What motherboard do you have? I’m pretty certain it should have the right PCI slot (PCIe 2.0). Just check the mobo specs and see if it has a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot.

Here’s a review on the card.

PSU can be upgraded and pretty cheaply. Not sure of prices where you are, but they’re about $100 in Australia for a 550W PSU or even $65 for a 500W one.
I don’t really get the point of the 550, the 460 seems better at the same price.

550 ~$140-$160

460 ~$150-$190
The 460 for $150. Where???

I have come to realise after several hours browsing the internet looking for midrange cards that i know absolutely nothing about PC hardware and possibly never will. Can somebody please recommend to me a the best card that is currently available for less that $150 USD.

Also would it be necessary to install some sort of cooling system when i get a graphics card?

Don’t cheap out too much, spend a few extra and get something that’s going to run for a while. As a rule I never buy a Geforce card lower then the 6* version of it’s generation ie 8600gt+260gtx+ 460gtx+560ts+etc normally when following this rule your buying a “gaming” graphics card up to a “multimedia” card. you can play games on both true, but I have found for not much more money you get a nice boost in performance. In addition often the 6* version of a previous gen card is often more powerful then current gen 5* or lower.

Thanks this sort of advice is very helpful for me. What about AMD cards? I have heard that they released a good mid range card in 2009.

Newegg has the GeForce GTX 460 768MB and 460 SE 1GB for under $150. There’s even a regular GTX 460 1GB OC for $149.99 after rebate + $8 shipping. Most are $199.99-$219.99 with a $20-$30 mail in rebate though.(not counting open box and recertified)

If a card needs any sort of cooling it should be built onto it.

(Spaiker) #26

Why is it so hard for the devs to give those requirements?

(LyndonL) #27

They’re still optimising the game

(DarkangelUK) #28

Because they don’t just stop optimizing, they try and push what they can to get the min requirements as low as possible.

(coolstory) #29

I heard brink is gonna be SD’s most customizable games yet. If that’s the case then you can just turn off all the annoying effects and get good fps.

(DarkangelUK) #30

Well they want it to run WITH all the affects, there’d be nothing but ultimate whinge if the game bogged down even on beefy systems with high detail.

(PariahDog) #31

I’m just hoping they release the system requirements by the end of the month, as my desktop’ motherboard/processor is slowly dying and thats the longest I will wait before I buy a new PC.
They’re both nVidia…?

I was always an ATI fan, but the latest gen of nVidia is wiping the floor with ATI from the benches I’ve seen. I’m about to buy either a couple of GTX480 or 570s depending if the 480 comes down in price in the next couple of months with the 6990’s release.
sorry, I meant an not the, whisky brain here

but for around $200 I’d get a 6870

(crazyfoolish) #33

What about the Radeon HD 5770?

(General Wolfens) #34

giving Preorders out but no Min. Requirements?? I beg there are many players not buying it yet because they don’t know any system requirements. So plz let us know as soon as possible. Or just what we have to exspect.

(Maawdawg) #35

If you are going to go as far as get a 5770 I would spend the extra bit to get the 6850. It is a far better card in performance compared to the 5770 and draws quite a bit less power than the comparable Nvidia cards. What is your monitor resolution by the way? Many of these higher mid level cards are overkill for smaller monitors. A 6850 or GTX 460 can run pretty much anything currently on the market pretty well at 1920x resolution.

This article may have some good info for you in making your decision.

Ok thanks. My resolution is 1366x768. Also one more card to compare. The Nvidia 280 for around $190 usd. Is that a good deal?
I realise that is DX 10

(Nail) #37

the 460 is a MUCH better card imo

(crazyfoolish) #38

Really didn’t the 280 outperform it on benchmarks?

(Nail) #39

not in the one I linked earlier

(LyndonL) #40

Benchmarks are so subjective. I’m going to buy a GTX 570 in the next week or two and have been researching as much as I can and I have seen that many different results for benchmarks with that card it’s not funny. It depends on what technologies the bench is using. Some cards well out perform others in some areas but are useless (comparitively) in others. It depends on what games you will be playing and what technologies they utilise.
