Mines visibility

(iwound) #1

The new light on the mines makes it very clear and not hard to see.
As the engineer has had planting C4 removed, they have also taken a hit
because mines are so easy to see now they pose little threat.

Pre-patch people were concerned they could not see mines that well so its been increased to test.
It seems the result is everyone sees them now. is that what we want?

Look at this objectively even if your not a mine user consider how you would
feel if you could dodge a shotgun blast very easily by just walking around it.

I feel its too high and was just right in the last patch.
it beeps and it had lights flashing. the beeps generally give them away without showing themselves immediately.
Add the blue aura and they pose zero problem. I expect echo results will confirm this.
Someone mentioned the fact that there is less use of engie due to the C4 swap.
So that could be why there is less mine kills. But imo its the very high visibility.

Combined with the C4 there is little use for the engineer atm but if you test it you
quickly understand why, 3 weak weapons and no C4. they’ve been doubly neutered.

mines take no skill and are cheap kills. wouldn’t even care if they were takien out of the game.

the light around the mine doesnt matter. Ppl who were concious about minds, saw them anyways. i mean when you place the mine at obvious places(doorways, middle of a room). the only way mines can come in handy in tricky spots, where mines are on the other side of a small wall or behind a corner. it doesnt matter if they light more, blink or even dance. I think its nice to have a red/blue light to distinguish them

EDIT: dont forget the learning curve, the more we play the more concious we will get about certain game mechanics and how to counter/prevent it.

Tbh, I didn’t have an issue “that much” with the visibility of the mines, what bugs me the most is the total lack of visual feedback when an engi throws his mine in mid-fight. I already have to be on my toes because in the right hands, the shotgun still leaves small room for error (which is not bad, but just pointing out) so if I have no visual clue whatsoever (apart from a fast throw which is easily lost in the strafe dance) of the engi throwing a mine at my feet, I just die with no warning.

If anything, i’d like to see these type of mines doing a self arm (supposedly you just dump them mid-fight, they’re a special model with arming timeout xD) with the increased visiblity (either from a way more obvious visual animation feedback from the engi, or the glowing areas). The mines which are properly planted (with a small arm time) should be receiving increased stealth, maybe even more than before patch (just a lile tip visible above the geometry or smth). I remember lots of lulz jumping like mad to skip the hot area near the axis spawn in goldrush bank, because allied engies were doing a nice ikebana of mine flags there.

I disagree about the mines and their utility vs skill ratio, because competition matches will most likely impose a class limit so when your team engi knows where and when to plant those mines to gain those extra match seconds, we’ll have another chat about the noskill part ;). Sure, in pubs you’ll prolly have lots of mine spam, much like you have claymores in bf3. Nothing a bunch of nades and a good drone strike won’t clear tho

Its not about the kills it a defense thing. It should be used to protect your teams defendable objectives and high traffic routes for the other team. Keeping you from building the barricade and slowing your team down is what I am doing. It’s not about the kills.
I think they are to visible and should go back to pre patch visibility.
I think fewer players are playing engine now that c4 has been taken from them and they have as nerf shotgun.
Imn guessing that’s the real there are less mine kills

(Violator) #6

I think they are too visible now, however they take longer to destroy which seems to emphasise their role as a visible deterrent rather than a sneaky hidden kill device, which I think removes some of the fun as a pubber imho. The main problem I have is the instakill, in previous ET games if you leapt away quick enough you would still take a lot of damage but survive. Also not a big fan of the self arming, the times you get into a fight with an eng, they dump a mine, they die then you die…

There is again no vote option “care”

(Nail) #8

only ever saw 1 enemy mine in game, was a bright red light so I killed it

(EnderWiggin.DA.) #9

I thought they were easy to spot before if you paid attention. They beep loudly.
Get rid of the beep but make them more visible OR keep the beep and make them less visible.

(INF3RN0) #10

I like it how it is now. Mines should be placed so that people can’t see them anyway, but at least now you don’t get killed by a poorly placed mine just because it blends in with the environment. Beeping can be less now though.

(DJScream) #11

Needs more testing but I did vote for keeping it as it is.

(tokamak) #12

Like with the other explosions., about 75% damage of average full hp, wide radius and huge shockwave blow back.

(Mustang) #13

I’m agnostic, just as long as they don’t add a big square fake HUD LED that isn’t even part of the visual design/skin.

(Protekt1) #14

I’m not a fan of explosive mines in FPS. They should replace it with a detection mine that has a far reaching noise like an alarm

(Breo) #15

I like the way how proxy mines work in ETQW when you trigger them you hear a click (fast beep would be cool) and if your quick enough you have the chance to get around the corner without damage.

(murka) #16

Never had a problem with mines as they were audible enough to notice even in the heat of a battle. They kind of remind me of etqw proxy mines, if you got killed by them, you deserved it.

(Pytox) #17

I like the mines before pre-patch, now it’s is just too easy to spot em
maybe they should have a bit less damage though

(iwound) #18

im going to have to admit they need more than what they were.
i dont know if its the current lighting or im just getting used to them but
checking the visibility of unarmed mines ( no light ) they ARE near on impossible to see.
add in a hectic and loud scene and bleeps are useless.
it obviously needs some light when armed i just hope the outer glow is
tight enough so they cant be spotted from too long a distance.
add in a good strong inner light so they are obvious when in close.

I think the beeping is completely fine.
Mines should need support, they are much more effective if used as a support item rather than a fire and forget.

I dont like the light tho, you can see that mid fight (heavy fight) where you are concentrating on shooting down the enemies, you should not be able to clearly see that mine, the beep being less audible under the firefight, again, kinda the point.
I have been in a few fights where the enemy literally danced round my mine while the team was shooting me, got into cover, shot it and moved on. While this is fine, the frequency of it kind of hurt, the mine placement wasnt even that bad, it has become reaalllyy hard hide them well round corners atm because the glow sticks out the edge of the corner… which sucks.

With the beep - If the mines left alone and its quiet you can hear it, you know you are coming up to a mine and can deal with it accordingly, i have done this before the patch and i continue to do so.
With the glow i can see the mine mid firefight and dodge it, even if its hidden under a corpse or such.

I guess i have started using them at much closer ranges to try and deal with it, start firefight, drop mine, hope it triggers as they get there, they are distracted shooting you or you kill them.

All while remembering to never ever touch 1.

Also, 1 mine is fine. I kinda like it… its like my buddy now.

it depends a lot on local lighting as to how effective they are. in darker areas they now light up like a xmas tree.
whereas in lighter areas this can play down the effect of the light and blend in better. so restricts there use a lot.
yes now engies only have 1 mine so when it continually gets removed its not good.
also there is still no mine counter to tell me if its been destroyed. seems someone had it in for engies recently.
