Might get this on PS3 today...

Does anybody still play the PS3 version? Is it easy to find at least a decent game with humans on PS3? Any tricks to getting into good games? Will the community at least be around for a while (I know it’s probably gonna be small, But hey, Shadowrun on 360 sold about the same as Brink for PS3, and people still play that)

Thank you

But still, Is it easy to get a decent game going (With humans of course) through the in game matching thing? And how does the game match you with others?

(thesuzukimethod) #4

def still going strong on ps3… best tip is to get your PSN ID in this thread
so you can get added to the bigteams chat/lobby thingy.

i only play against bots/standard when i want to test something out about my character or do some random leveling up, and then almost without fail, folks met here, or just randoms, end up playing in these matches.

Rent it first. This way your massive disappointment will only cost you $1 and not $50 or $60 like the rest of us.

However if you do like it then all power to you. Just pickup one of the dozens of used copies at your local Gamestop.

Wolf beat me to it, but you can also go to this thread: http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27518

The only trick is to make add friends from these threads, join the chat rooms, and use the chat rooms as your “matchmaking lobby”.

During the weekend you can easily find full 8v8 human games, and even during the week you can still find them as well.

It’s not a bustling metropolis of players, per se, but it’s enough to get the job done.

EDIT: and then TSM goes and beats me to the punch on the second link!

(thesuzukimethod) #7

when you just join a match from scratch (if you’re not going through the chat room/lobby thing (link i/AWM posted above)), i recommend starting with “big teams” to see where it puts you, and then standard if you dont find anyone

if you dont first find folks, stick with it, b/c like i posted above, even in matches where i intended to play against bots (to test an ability, a weapon config, etc), i still get matched up with/against humans after 1/2 a match or so, especially with friends list folks who see I’m on/playing.

(thesuzukimethod) #8

the speed with which we all jump in to point you in the right direction reflects the dedication of a core group of folks who (seem to) play quite a bit.

Add on top of that an additional layer of more casual players (i’ve played against hundreds of different human players on ps3 (according to players met on PS3/PSN) who I’ve only seen once or twice)…

Here’s a guy on YouTube who posted a TON of videos of Brink on PS3, from the start of the game and onward.

If you don’t mind commentary with your YouTube gameplay vids, then this is a good series:

this is where the chat/lobby thing is key. once you get in the chat/lobby, people will start games and then message the lobby to start a new game with invites to join. when that game fills up, someone else in the lobby can start a new match and invite more folks to a game.

when you join from scratch, it does sometimes put you in an empty game, but this rarely lasts if you stick it out for a few minutes…

plus what I’ve done is found a smaller group of people from the chat that play at a similar time as I do (and added them as friends) and Brink lets me join their matches (and them mine).

between that and the chat/lobby, it tends to snowball…

(thesuzukimethod) #13

i think it’s entirely the matchmaking system, owing the hundreds of discrete PSN folks I’ve played with/against. I play most of the time by matching up through the chat/lobby, but a decent chunk of the time, i will just drop into a “standard” match when i only have time for a few matches, and almost always find humans in those as well.

The chat organized matches are rarely less than 6 v 6 (humans) and are often full… and the standard matches are often at least 3-4 humans per team, or get that way after a round or so. (i’ve dropped into a standard match to test a new ability, been the only human at the start, and by the end of the match, it was 3-4 vs 3-4 (plus bots).

one problem (still, as always) is when you start a match and are the only human, if you back out right away (and everyone else is doing this too, no one finds each other). if you get a match going, people who are dropping in are more likely to find your match, vice versa, etc.

(AmishWarMachine) #14

The in-game matchmaking system is… less than optimal (being nice here)

That’s why we’ve had to “invent” a more reliable lobby system of our own.

(AmishWarMachine) #15

TSM, I’m starting to get an Echo Complex~

(thesuzukimethod) #16

note: “standard” is the name (and the default setting) for one type of public matches in the brink matchmaking system.

(as i mentioned in my editing reason above, i think it’s safe to say that we’re all hoping for lobbies in the next patch, even though the various workarounds help mitigate the issues associated with not having them)

(thesuzukimethod) #17

LOL. great minds think alike? (or two dudes who are supposed to be working but find recruiting new players to be more fun)…

what did we do before the internet? oh yeah, our jobs!

(wolfnemesis75) #18

I’d say avoid jumping in without a parachute or safety net. You are off to a good start by coming here. If you get the game, my best advice is to follow the links provided, and join some of the others there so you start with a base of players. You’ve obviously heard all the bad press and to an extent its true. Trick with Brink is having 5-10 solid friends who play on a regular basis. This is not a 50 million sales COD fanbase, but a very small niche new IP. Brink is a game that has a wagon train of baggage and negative following. So your best bet to have a fun experience is to find like-minded folks who still play and enjoy it.

Renting it is tough because it has a steep learning curve and is hard to pick up in a rental period, so I’d discourage that. The game doesn’t open up really until you are at least LVL 15. At Max level (20) you are really starting to cook, figure out weapons, and best tactics. Most respec their first lvl 20 character because you make mistakes with an initial build. Not a Gamefly Rental.

BRINK IS YOUR JOB NOW!!!

Forget your old life, its over now, no more family or bills or work, just Brink 24/7 365. I thought we all already agreed to this the day we bought Brink and PSN came back online!?!?

(digitalzero) #20

If you do pick it up, post your PSN in the thread mentioned. Run through some of the challenges to learn gameplay and get abilities / gun attachments. Make sure you select ‘my level or higher’ when finding a match. This group is fun to play with so I hope you have a mic. Good luck!
