MG-42 problems.

I personally love this gun so much, especially when I got one of my friends dropping ammo on me and watching my sides. But anyway a few problems I gotta point out.

This gun can be a serious pain in the ass sometimes. As I’m sure most of you know, if you look down passed a certain point the gun stops going down but the cross hair still moves. You can fire down there and you can kill, but you are basically shooting blindly because the gun barrel and the flash get in the way completely. When I first tried the stationary machine-guns in the test I thought this was a bug and would be worked out… Maybe it is and they didn’t notice it or maybe they are keeping it in on purpose? I have not tried this but turning off your gun drawing will probably fix the whole gun-getting-in-the-way thingy… but I would much rather have the gun on.

Another problem:

The angle that you are allowed to shoot is determined by the angle of elevation that you plant your bipod on. (This isn’t exactly clear so I try to explain what I mean)

If you put the mg bipod out on a surface that is sloping down (the direction you are facing is sloping down) you will be able to fire down but you will not be able to fire up as much. The opposite is true for a surface that is sloping up. It is very similar to the way your horizontal movement is restricted (only that is not affected by the terrain). Anyway this leads to incredibly annoying situations where you would have to lay down on a certain side of a hill just to be able to fire at the correct angle and then crawl backwards into position which is probably more close to the top of the hill.

What I’m saying is that the angle your gun can shoot vertically is determined at the time that you put your gun down and pulled out the bipod and that any movement onto differently angled terrain has no effect on this.

This is closely related to the gun getting in the way of you shooting because if you set your gun up behind a hill (like on fueldump as axis at the beginning on that huge mound) and then crawl up into position your gun will be sticking straight up into the air and you will be worthless. Same thing happens when you set it up on the top of the hill only to a lesser extent.

Another thing: If I am planning on being a machine-gunner on fuel dump, I will play a covert ops on a previous map to gain breath control. Breath control makes the machine gun fire with much less recoil. By that I mean the crosshair doesn’t expand as much as it normaly does so you can fire off constantly rather then in bursts, so you don’t have to let the thing settle down… It would be nice to keep this ability in there, just give one of the heavy weapons this bonus rather then making people play Covert Ops in order to get a bonus to machine-gunning…

Anyway…

what ever happened to plain old fun?

I know what you’re talking about, and it seems like a bug to me, but you can use it to your advantage. I like to deploy on a downward facing surface, then move into position, and that way the gun is out of my face, and I’m less vulnerable from below. This could be seen as an exploit, though, I don’t know. I don’t play as a machinegunner much anyway.

xero, what the hell are you talking about?

weasel: yeah, I tend to do that on fuel dump so the mg stays out of the way

Haha, that’s really ironic. Need to get Covert skill to perform better as a Soldier… while at the same time, there is a Soldier skill that is only useful for a Covert! Heavy Weapons level 2 prevents your machinegun from overheating, but this is basically useless to a soldier. His large machineguns are so damaging that you hardly ever need to shoot them long enough to overheat. The only gun where overheating is a real obstacle is the Sten, which of course is only for coverts.

So if you want to play a covert and get a silent gun of equal power to an MP40, just get soldier level 2 first…

(I wish HeavyWeapons bonuses were more useful. Level 4 is good, but 2 is pretty useless, and 1 & 3 are only good for panzering. There should be a skill to toggle tripod mode faster, for example)

you are correct with your assumption, cg_drawgun 0 fixes the problem of the MG42 getting in your way

Pamper, not sure about that, I will have to see if that works!

Edit: It works!
