Mercs to Look Forward To?

(mendaciousPole) #1

Hello, open beta player here. Since I wasn’t in the closed beta, I never got to see mercs such as Stoker, Phantom, Phoenix, or Turtle. I still have almost no idea about what these mercs were capable of, such as abilities, effective range, etc.

So what can I look forward to seeing?

(Azure Emulation) #2

So the currently unreleased Mercs are:

  • (Recon) Aimee, Redeye, Phantom
  • (Assault) Thunder
  • (Medic) Phoenix
  • (Fire Support) Stoker
  • (Engineer) Turtle

Aimee can deploy motion sensors to detect enemy movement. Similar to Vassili’s heartbeat sensor except his only needs enemies in radius to be detected. Her’s just played an audio warning when enemies passed by.

Redeye can throw smoke grenades and use infared goggles to get clearer visuals on the enemy, even through smoke and other non-solid visual obstructions.

Phantom can go practically invisible (90% transparent, more specifically) and use a sword as his primary weapon to stealth kill enemies. Feedback stated that he was a balance nightmare and didn’t contribute much to the objective by his playstyle alone, so his mechanics are subject to change.

Thunder is similar to Fragger, except he throws concussion grenades and uses a higher RoF, higher ammo capacity LMG as his primary. I’m personally looking forward to this guy as he seems like a mix between Fragger and Rhino, my two current favorite Mercs.

Phoenix emits healing pulses instead of giving medpacks, and he can self-revive. He also carries a defib like every other Medic Merc.

Stoker can throw molotovs for long-term area denial, and can deploy an ammo station. Similar in spirit to Kira.

Turtle can deploy a small, durable wall for cover. Since he’s an Engineer Merc, he also plays the objective faster. So far, this is the only Merc that has never been released even in CBT.

Just pulled all this information off the wiki. To my knowledge, each and every one of these Mercs is planned to be returning to the battlefield. If you’d like to get more information on specific loadouts used, maybe read their bio and such, then I suggest you go check there.

As stated above, Thunders grenades I cant frankly remember how they worked, Either blinding enemies for a couple of seconds and I believe mess with enemy player’s mouse sensativity, making it sluggish, his grenades couldn’t be cooked but had a faster detonation time than Fragger’s.

Theres also a merc in the works that there is little known about them, visually outside of having a a rocket launcher, Named “Javelin” who is a fire support with an ammo station, their rocket takes a minute to get off cooldown.

Here is a video of some of their abilities in action, except for Pheonix

When I try to look at the wiki all I see are unspecified stats.

I heard on the developer stream last week that aimee is getting a complete re-work because she wasnt distinct enough and was pretty much just a girl version of Vassili, with a worse HBS.

The wiki linked on the front page of Dirty Bomb.

A few questions to anyone who has actually played with/against these mercs.
How effective was Red Eye’s smoke in the actual grenade?
How hard was it to see Phantom when he cloaked?
Compared to the medics in game now, how effective was Phoenix’s healing ability?

(GildedDark) #8

Red eyes smokes were great for flanking and a lot easier to hide in. With his thermal it turns enemies I white color so combining the two is a great tactic

Phantom was probably 85-90% hidden so you could spot him but it required alittle effort

Phoenixes pulse was kinda op, it acted like sawbonez’s packs in the since that they healed over time it had a 25 second delay if I remember correctly and a radius slightly larger than auras station. So he was pretty much a walking medpack station

(mendaciousPole) #9

How often could he use his ability?

How quickly could he kill people? I’m wondering how close he was to the spy in tf2.

(CCP115) #10

Probably instantly, E3 trailer hinted at it, and if it wasn’t instagib then the victim would have reaction time to spaz out and escape.

(Temporary) #11

I read somewhere that the normal slash would kill in 2 hits where as the lunge would do it in one but you lose momentum for a second or two - Both have a longer reach thn the normal melee.

(Reddeadcap) #12

The slashes, 2-3 based on enemy health and the lunge I think did 100 damage

@Pheonix07
Pheonix’ healing pulse was about 1 every 12 seconds without multiple charges making it best to use when surrounded by friendlies, his self revive had a 1 minute cool down I believe.

Smoke grenades were about 1 every 25 seconds and were really blinding for both parties, but redeye could see enemies as white in a dark background with his thermal vision, he also marked enemies for his teammates, smoke could be blasted away with explosions.

Phantom was highly visible when he ran/ sprinted directly in front of people. But less visible if he walked, crouch walked and I believe standing still even recharged his cloak.

How long was his cloak?

(Reddeadcap) #14

@Pheonix07 15 seconds I believe.

(watsyurdeal) #15

Phantom is looking to be hilariously fun, which is good because I liked the Spy in TF2 a lot, so this is right up my alley it seems.

(mendaciousPole) #16

I think I need to put 50,000 credits away so I can buy Phantom when he comes out. Especially since I main Spy in tf2.

(Reddeadcap) #17

More Redeye gameplay, with a bit more emphasis on his monocle/smoke, if you’re interested as people are saying he might be next.

Hopefully the implementation of Phantom will make people using Vasilli use their heartbeat sensors, since other than that and Redeye’s monocle, theres no way to easily see him.

Because, they want those xXx1337D4NK420B14Z317360xXx Headshot montages and dont want someone else that does xXx1337D4NK420B14Z317360xXx Headshot montages to try to trash their rep by saying they saw the enemy coming around the corner due to the heartbeat sensor, rather than… you know… help their team…

I lost brain cells reading those names. I hope you’re happy, I needed those.
