Merc Ethnicities

(Theatrum) #1

One of the things I like about games like this is how they represent different nationality and ethnicity in their characters, I like hearing the different accents and how language and culture can shine through. I wanted to make a thread about the kind of nationality and history people would want to see. What countries would you like to see represented and why?

Some countries I’d like to see (roughly by population)
India
Iran
Italy
Fiji

And one from mainland Australia because it’s a downright insult that Australia would be rep’d by a Tasmanian. Or for laughs make them ‘Australian (New Zealand)’. Does it seem odd to anyone else that Americans outnumber the English in a game set in England?

So far DB has:
English - Proxy, Stoker, Vassili
American - Phantom, Sawbonez, Bushwacker, Aura
Canadian - Fragger
Scottish - Skyhammer
Welsh - Rhino
Australian - Redeye
French - Aimee
German - Nader
Spanish - Phoenix
Norwegian - Javelin
Turkish - Turtle
Russian - Sparks, Thunder
Nigerian - Fletcher
Japanese - Kira
Korean - Guardian
Chinese - Arty

I think it’s time for South Europe to shine!

Add a Sebian:

Calm down ShinyWindow 2.0.

I want a Jewish merc, so Nader can finally get shipped. Maybe add two just to fill in each archetype. One is a seriously devout Jew that has quotes from the Torah and is a genius, and the other one is a slick businessman working with high people in German.

Maybe an Italian that claims he’s actually Roman, and then a religious German that also call themselves Roman, and then add a quip where Turtle says he is proud of his Roman heritage.

And then someone from Southeast Asia. My pick is between a Filipino or an Indonesian. If we add the latter, then we would also need a rich Dutch character (maybe Jackal’s associate or something just for backstory).

Finally, add an actual Russian. I mean a REALLY Russian guy, like fanatically Orthodox guy with a gag about him loving pelmeni, and maybe add a backstory where he’s like the last standing Romanov or something just to sprinkle the Ruskie flavor.

IMO the game needs a Gurkha.

Other than that the game doesnt have anyone from the middle east.

Add a Serbian

Only if they add random incoming phone calls from his cousin during heavy firefights.

And DO NOT, I repeat… DO NOT mess up this clothing!
Timik is a must, for a Serbian!

Hmm, let me think. We still have no fat medic. I think the fat medic could be some sort of African or Thai village shaman. Native American could also work well for this one. Beyond that, we just need more white nationalities. Lots of them to trigger Shiny even more. Badass Germans, some hot Slavic chicks, maybe an Italian or Portuguese, a Swedish dude, Australians. You name it.

Oh, and please add an American from the northeast so I can enjoy killing them. A Boston, Jersey, or New York accent will suffice.

How could we forget the bug eating Indians?

We need a creep like that, covered all over with bugs/dead animals or have a living snake as a necklace!

Turtle? Turkey is close enough. It’s right in that hot pocket where Asians, Arabs, and east Euros all hate each other. What a pleasant place to live. Bet everyone is a nice neighbor that comes together for the holidays.

We need an Australian survivalist who before becoming a merc, lived in the woods for years with only the food they hunted and the many jars of “lemondade”.

"Snipin’s a good job, mate! It’s challengin’ work, outta doors. I guarantee you’ll not go hungry-

_'cause at the end of the day, long as there’s two people left on the planet, someone is gonna want someone dead." _

[calls dad]
“Dad? Dad, I’m a- Ye- Not a “crazed gunman”, dad, I’m an assassin! …Well, the difference bein’ one is a job and the other’s a mental sickness!”

the next sniper/recon merc needs to have a TF2 reference or something

I just want to know why Thunder doesn’t have these moves as a taunt. That should be first priority.

On second thought, maybe he does when we’re concussed and can’t see him…

Funny, I never thought of Turkey to be “middle east” but after a quick search it apparently is, I guess that ticks that box.

I still would like a Gurkha though, seeing as they were used by the british army it wouldnt be far fetched to have one being a soldier of fortune in DB.

Yeah, it’s weird. The most obvious thing to me was Turtle saying “Salam” in game.

I’m sorry for the offtopic, but I couln’t help myself:

Thunder is actually Polish. He falseflags as a Russian.

I think most of the mercs should be from UK. Isn’t it little bit weird that you see these Chinese, Nigerian and Turkish people in British all-volunteer army. Protecting streets of London and just for money. Whats even worse, everyone is fighting for both sides maintaining status quo. There should be reason to fight for britain and not do what ever they do in spare time, or previous life. Reason to die, reason to live. It might be possible to have situations that there are no british mercs on field. Which leaves uncertain questions about labour code and racial opportunism in command chain. Of course I dont mind new mercs, especially if you accidentally drop one Finnish merc. I just think they should be more homogeneous. Slight step to more gritty, regular and individual world. Unless battleground extend to other countries. Dirty Bomb shows too much extravagant attention to cultural differencies. I dont want to be a stereotype, do you?

I can only imagine that Finnish guy will be silent, booze drinking perkele guy with sniper and skis.

Probably hard to do with all that dead weight he caries on his back, especially the crouching parts!

But he’s a Slav… I think it’s safe to say he has an Adidas tracksuit on underneath that armor. Thunder quads built like cold Russian steel.
