Matchmaking filtered by level?

(crazyfoolish) #1

I remember hearing about this quite a while ago but i haven’t heard anything about it recently. Does anybody know if Brink will still have the system where matchmaking will look for other players whose characters are of a similar level to yours?

(tokamak) #2

Yes but I don’t think it warrants a new topic.

As far as I know, its still in.

Rank 1: Character Level between 0/1 - 5
Rank 2: Character Level between 6 - 10
Rank 3: Character Level between 11 - 15
Rank 4: Character Level between 16 - 20

But you can play with a lower character against higher ranked enemies, but not with lvl 20 character against lower enemies = so n00b bashing ist not allowed in Brink

I never exactly was certain about how that would work out. If i had a character Lvl 16 and a friend of mine is lvl 6 Id have to remake a character to play on his server? Could we make a lobby together and it would be set for the person with the higher of the 2 levels?

(SockDog) #5

I would hope friends lists take priority over matchmaking.

(Weapuh) #6

That’s what id think but then Id may lead to lvl 20 on a lvl 0-5 server. It could also be exploited “Join this server as lvl 1, I’ll connect with my lvl 20, you quit and then YOU join with lvl 20.” Elaborate for nothing but I’ve seen much worse so i don’t rule it out :stuck_out_tongue:

Well this brings us back to allowing the game to handicap players/teams (or giving the player/team the option to play with a handicap or find another server) rather than putting in broken/exploitable rules to prevent mismatches from occurring.

(crazyfoolish) #8

Also in my personal opinion, rank does not necessarily denote skill.
Anyway what if a player who has been playing brink for a long time wishes to create a new character. Surely then they would start again in the lowest ranking part of matchmaking.

(Nail) #9

xp et all is transferable afaik, and my understanding was a low level could join a high level game, but high levels couldn’t join a low level game

(tokamak) #10

I hope not. The rule that high levels can’t join servers with low levels but low levels can join servers with high levels doesn’t detract from being able to play with your mates.

(Nail) #11

be interesting to see if PC servers have some sort of level filter

(DarkangelUK) #12

Do you mean Quake Live style where high levels can’t see very low levels that they know they can’t join, and low levels can’t see really high levels etc?

(Nail) #13

not sure what might be implemented, not something I’d likely use server side, but you know some people will want level 20 only servers.

probably guys who have team ranked together and offline, then wonder why they get rolled by guys who have leveled up online, and proceed to call them all hacks and ban them all

:penguin:

(SockDog) #14

I get what you mean but it does detract if you have to piss around rather than simply joining a lower ranked friend’s game.

(Wheelchairman) #15

i dont remember where i heard it but i thought a lvl 20 could join other lower lobbies but they wouldnt be able to use their high level abilities, so if they had a soldier with lvl 3 kevlar and level 3 ammo giving then they would only be able to use the level 1s of those abilities in 0-5 lobbies and so on. SD is gonna make this game very balanced and they are still working on balancing by looking at every element. including matchmaking stuff

(Weapuh) #16

Pretty interested to see how they implement it. Also wondering if it will be a server-side cvar or simply a matchmaking rule.

(tokamak) #17

True, but the alternative of low players smuggling high level players into newbie matches is far less preferable. Of course there will always be free servers.

(Nail) #18

by free, do you mean open ie: open to all ?

(tokamak) #19

Yes, after all, admins can do with their servers however they want.

(Nail) #20

just checking, I sometimes miss references
