Maps too static

(rookie1) #1

I find maps too static:
I know its an almost dead city but would be nice if there were more action in it .

we cant break cars/trucks windows
What if there were more moving objects .
like may be a police car with the red/blue flasher on
anti thief alarm on sometime,Gaz containers/Barils that could be shoot.
May be neutral scene (crowd evacuation),planes …
A building wall collapsing…on some paths a floor that will smashed under our weight or just cracking
Even you could push it with ,say at one swaping place first thing we could have to do is kill some Wild enraged dogs pack that jump on us (both teams).idk that would be awesome imo

The problem with that level of interactivity is that because both sides have different interests, they also prefer their maps differently. So if glass is breakable, car alarms can be set off or vehicles can explode then they can quickly turn in a list of chores to take care off at the start of the map in order to gain an advantage.

Defenders may go round and start pre-emptively destroying cars at the start of the match so they don’t suddenly blow up while they’re defending from behind it. I think that having to tailor the map at the start to gain more advantages is detracting from the gameplay.

Interactive small stuff is really only fun when maps in a deathmatch setting where maps dont have a narrative. For objective games you want interactive big stuff like bridges and walls that can be destroyed and be remade. The interaction would have to come from side objectives both sides can fight over. These minor objectives would also really need to be undoable and redoable so they can keep fighting over it.

ETQW demonstrated the problem quite well with the Salvage map. It’s quite easy for the Strogg to blow up the wall in the GDF base while the GDF is still defending the first objective. It wasn’t something to fight over, just a thing you did at the start of the match because the defenders couldn’t afford to defend it.

I think interactive stuff needs to be restricted to objectives.
Maybe have some random interactive stuff in TDM.

As for non-interactive elements such as flickering lights and whatnot: sure. If it fits then I’m all for flickering lights / smoking ruins / planes in the skybox flying overhead.

Would explodable cars be too much of an ask? You can use the vehicles for cover, but the run the risk of being taken out if it blows.

(tokamak) #5

Blowing up cars wouldn’t happen excitingly during the thick of the fight, they would be blown up pre-emptively before they become a liability to the team. And that’s when dynamic objects become a chore rather than a gameplay object.

Cars explode in CoD (most versions in fact), there’s never really a spate of carnage (sorry) before the fighting begins just to get rid of them.

ET:QW had vast maps where if you slipped by and did such things it was indeed something the defence couldn’t afford to defend, this isn’t ET:QW though, take smaller maps like Radar in W:ET with the side entrance, you could either spawn back and defend it from start or run over to it from main bunker if called for in a matter of seconds. It depends on how the map uses them.

I understand the case for not having breakable glass in DB as the setting has lots of glass and can’t make it all damageable and having mixture of glass that magically can’t break and glass that can would be odd. However for other minor stuff I don’t see why not if doesn’t harm performance, being able to shoot chairs, bits of wood, notice boards and such in W:ET was nice little touch, would be cool to see that stuff again. I heard on IRC that the street cones can be shoot around though which is nice.

Other things such as moving objects around the map would be good to see also, perhaps the odd helicopter flying over and stuff like that would be welcome.

I think it depends on what happens when they explode and how much effort it takes to make them explode + the game mechanics (can I afford to waste my ammo / grenades?)

For instance in BF3 there is a map with an underground parking lot with multiple cars that can explode and it takes less than a magazine clip to make them do so. So I generally blow them up before I hide behind them, or hide a few meters from them.

If we want cars to explode maybe it would also be interesting to say when they should explode? Only explosive ammo? 2 clips? 3 bullets? do the windows smash separately?

I’m not really a fan of that idea, I’m all for artwork in the surroundings like in W:ET you had the dog barking so maybe we could actually get some dogs jumping at a fence in a secluded alley to scare the **** out of you. But actual stuff on the playing field should be scarce imo.
Unless we’re talking about TDM, I think my favorite TDM maps have some kind of external element like a huge crane in the middle that drops boxes on people or a lava pit etc… It’s funny when you’re in a fight with somebody and then they get killed by the environment.

Exactly that small not really gameplay changing stuff is fun.

In RtCW, especially on tram, we used to move the chairs to the doorway. Sure they broke with 1 bullet, but the enemy would rush in expecting to take us down by force and get caught on these chairs, leaving us to mow them down… was hilarious when it worked properly.

(tokamak) #10

That’s the sort of thing I’m worried about.

There’s already quite a few birds up in the sky.

On one of the maps, theres a 747 I think.

The car explosion would be good addition, if is to time consuming to pull i will be happy with the car alarms be triggered by shooting or bumping in to cars, this way you can reveal your position to the enemy or lure them in to a trap  assuming the Dirty Bomb was not also a EMP bomb.
Also for the future, you can implement combat dogs :D, available to a class who will respond to commands like “Attack my target, sniff out mines, protect the obj. carrier, etc.” I was also thinking about kamikaze bomb strap dogs, but this will bring some rage from animal rights movements and dog lovers (including me :D)

(rookie1) #13

im for it using these things for luring/damaging/killing ennemies …like these would be part of the gameplay

(SinDonor) #14

I am for car deformation, but exploding cars are kind of silly. You could shoot 1000 rounds at a car in reality and 99.9% of the time it would not explode. I think the cars in Rainbow Six were the best. They would get flat tires, broken glass, etc, but would never explode.

(stealth6) #15

This was done on tc_base too, you could block the ramp up to the north? radar with chairs. Then most of the time the enemy would shoot them to get past.

I don’t even think it’s a bad thing, the chairs broke in 1 hit and it was an interesting tactic.

(INF3RN0) #16

Anti told me they might be adding some of these types of things, but yes I agree the maps feel a bit dead. Anyone else notice the alternate routes in TDM versions of the map? I think some of these routes would be nice additions as destructable/reconstructable sub objectives.

(iwound) #17

id like to see a group shoving a car into the ev’s path. cars are the new chairs.

[ul]
[li]All for more incidental physics items on the ground.
[/li][li]Could there be clouds of smoke/fog/mist on some levels just drifting through the levels?
[/li][li]Aerial objects, planes, helicopters, military drones would all be nice
[/li][li]There are quite a few inaccessible roads visible, maybe these could show military trucks moving in/out of the city
[/li][li]Love the idea about putting jumpy easter eggs in there like the barking dogs
[/li][li]Destructible doors (can be a specific door type to avoid confusion) and furniture.
[/li][li]Can the EV show more range of damage. Would be nice if it got and kept bullet holes, got dents from grenades, charred and dented from airstrikes. I also want to be able to puncture the tires with my knife.
[/li][/ul]

Oh and if you bring in attack dogs, I have the perfect models free of charge.

(rookie1) #19

There could be a little gaz container beside a car that could be ignite with 1 or 2 bullets which could explode and make the car burn/explode and stuff

(Breo) #20

A surveillance helicopter with a searchlight at whitechapel would be cool
