Recently, whenever I’m playing campaign, ET always freezes during a map change, usually when the loading bar reaches about 3/4th of the way there, sometimes 1/4th of the way done. But its been a pain because i can’t even ctrl alt del out of it and i have to manually restart computer. I have a pretty old computer (still gives me 20 FPS in grass on Radar, and averages 30-40 FPS outdoors on other maps, and 70+ indoors), P3 800 MHz, 256 RDRAM and ET is basically running off my 64 MB GeForce 2 GTS, I don’t think I had this problem before the 1.02 patch, or maybe I can’t remember it happening as frequently as it happens nowadays. I reinstalled it and it happens even more now :bash: Is there any way to avoid this, besides playing objective, and stopwatch?
Map Change = Freeze
My random suggestion (which is probably not the solution but worth a try). When starting ET, check your com_hunkmegs in the console. It may be set to the default so try upping it to 160 (you may want to edit it in the cfgs). I had lots of lost connections to servers and general oddness on the default com_hunkmegs (it’s something silly and low like 56) but they haven’t happened at all since I upped it to 200 (I forget what the largest number it pays attention to is but I have 512MB and 200 seemed sensible enough).
Yeh its more than likely going to be that. As Al said, do a com_hunkmegs in console and check the value. It should be quite low if you aint ever touched it so i’d advise changing it to at least a third of your ram providing it is over the original value it is set at.
i remember changing hunkmegs to 160, and soundmegs to 32, and i think that might be the time it started happening a lot. It went smooth when i had hunkmegs at 128, or so I remember. Thanks for the input, i’ll see if changing it back to 128 helps again, because obviouslt 160 might just be too high for my old computer.
This is exactly what happens if you have too many .pk3 files in the server’s ETMAIN folder. The maximum is about 20. Beyond that clients will have difficulting and the serer will have difficulting switching maps. It will be loading and then recycle loading. On occation it makes it but it will eventually crash the server.
Someone suggested that an Unpure server may relieve the server of this limitation otherwise you will have to pack up the maps into large .pk3 or just limit the number of custom maps you have in the ETMAIN at any one time.
