Man, I have to admit.....

I bought a xbox 360 thinking it would surpass the graphics on the computer even for a few months but damn after seeing quake wars, It looks better then anything on the PS 3 and xbox 360. Im waiting to see what I need to play this game on my PC. Im seriously thinking about dropping 900 bucks just to play this game if that what it takes.

(JNDK22) #2

Im sure it wont take 900 dollars, but maybe 300 for a good graphics card, I have 2 gigs of ram emmory, 3.2 gz pentium and such.

I have aging AGP system (geforce2mx, Athlon 2800+, 512RAM) and I’m going to spend about 1400 PLN on the hardware just to play this game (600 for mainboard+sempron 3000 socket 939/64bit;Geforce7600 GT). This is like 140% of my monthly income. I work 6 hours/day. Then the game itself, which will be about 0.15 of my monthly earnings.

Either that, or buy some half-assed geforce 6600 gt and endure 30/40ish FPS, just like I currently do in W:ET. In 640x480 low detail. Forget it, I’m not going to be owned by some stupid medic just because of mediocre hardware. It gets old very quickly.

1 USD = 3,0157 PLN, at the moment.

I got a new computer as well, last week, and I said something to my partner and kids about “upgrade” but the truth is that is is purely because I want to play ETQW. Period.
(To be honest, I know they know.)

(JNDK22) #5

I hear that. My partner knows I love video games and knew I have been interested in Quake Wars. So when I mentioned a 300 dollars to 500 dollars upgrade they were pissed…but hey…they get over it  Im 22, no kids, If I had kids I would drop about 200 for video card but since I dont Im going hog wild. Im looking forward to playing as a medic so bad!

(Svanire) #6

Having kids is like putting your happyness in life on hold for 25 years.

(JNDK22) #7

true. I guess if I had kids, I would have to cut back on alot of things. Gaming things too. And I would.

(crumblycake) #8

If I had kids I would buy a Nintendo Wii…wait a minute I do have kids…they can have the little wii while I can play QW…Nice trade off…

Jahahahahaahh!

Aww. Me and my AMD Athlon 1800+, 1024 MB DDR Ram and ATI Radeon 9600pro EZ 256 MB… Ok soon to be replaced by laptop which would be: AMD Turion 64 X2 (or Intel Merom if it comes in time and is cheaper), 1 GB DDRII mem (at least, upgrade to 2 GB will follow) and Geforce Go 7600 256 MB/ ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 256 MB, still the geforce gets first choise if possible.

(jjpron) #10

i just overclocked my nvidia 5200 (126mb), in anticipation.
i played quake4 on it just fine, so i’m hoping QW will run on it. if not, oh well, i guess a new 50 dollar card is in order.
and best of all, it won’t require Vista, the most “game friendly” OS in history!!!

(Bravo) #11

Incorrect!

I have 6 kids, and each and every one of them is a jewel.

What you should have said is ‘put your wallet on hold for 25 years’ ysee

Back on topic, I have the following:

GeForce 6600
1.8Ghz AMD Athlon
1Gb RAM

Which would be a priority to upgrade first? I’m thinking the processor?

(McAfee) #12

A suggestion on those thinking of “mayor” upgrades (by that I mean whole platform). Take a look at upcoming options from both AMD and INTEL.

From AMD:
You will want to take a look at AMD’s AM2 socket. It will replace the 939 socket very soon. Basicly it adds support for DDR2-800. I won’t go into further details.

From INTEL:
Check out codename Conroe. I think the official name will be something on the lines of “Core Duo 2”. Some reviews claim a conroe is almost 30% faster than an AMD FX-60. I think I saw that at either Anandtech or TomsHardware.

I don’t want to go too deep into this as I don’t want to cook up any pointless discussions that lead to nothing. In the end, price is everthing. Dates play a part too. AMD’s should be ready by June-July. While Intel’s will be more like end of year.

(Joe999) #13

you won’t have to ask that question for a long time. reason: agp is dead. here in austria it starts getting hard to get an agp graphics card at all. everyone’s jumping on the pci express bus. so soon the question will be: completely new sys or graphics card from ebay?

(datoo) #14

You should do more research before you make a decision, but I’d guess you’d better off upgrading your GPU first for gaming performance.

Isnt Nvida making GF 7800 cards in AGP? 7800 should be enough for ETQW. Then the CPU will be the pottleneck, if you get a new hot gfx card. Socket A like it seems you have, doesnt have CPU with more than 3200+ (which is 2.2GHz), which is in performance about more or less an AMD 64 3000+ (available on socket939).

If you would run ET:QW on “low”, if there will be such a setting, your system will probably be OK. My guesses are “based” on what BF2 or Doom3 demands on “low” on your kind of specs.

“low” in ETQW is probably 4x the quality in ET anyway, so you should have OK/great gfx anyway on “low” setting.

To Joe999’s post

In the UK you can buy AGP cards online still from either both of which are very good scan i think has the better prices:

1.http://www.overclockers.co.uk/

  1. http://www.scan.co.uk/
There is a 512mb here Gainward 6800 or there are 7800’s.

  2. http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Name=nvidia+6800
there is a 512mb agp 6800 card out here, hope this helps, good price too
not sure on the make though never heard of it.

(Bravo) #17

Thanks for the advice guys, looks like not a priority to upgrade, but will look at processors at the end of the year
