Making ET more popular

(Nail) #21

xp save is evil and must be exterminated

(Pegazus) #22

True but a lot of players like it. Removing it will be like taking out a heart…

(twt_thunder) #23

if packs are to small you just get old looking maps and everybody is screaming about improving the ET scene, the only way to do this is to get NEW textures, models and skinpacks into the game.
And as said here download speed is good at almost every server…
for people who cant take the time for downloading i suggest go on the stock servers out there. we other can have fun with mods and new maps

(Nail) #24

more like xp save took out the heart, replaced it with a hello kitty sticker

(shagileo) #25

Hm, as interesting as this conversation may seem - it’s not going to change anything.
If people leave they’re not going to check back when a new map is released or something

Those who still want to play, they’ll keep on playing. Those who are determined to leave, they’ll come back… eventually

(Indloon) #26

ET just needs freshing.
Like new engine=>Xreal
And reworked textures and ALSO new maps, big maps!

(shagileo) #27

and koekjes … and mp3 supported audio formats

oh and 3D ability - - - no for real, that would kick buttocks

(FireFly) #28

EtXreal isn’t going to save W:ET.

Even if there would be a team of 20 or 30 people working on etxreal, creating new maps and new assets It wouldn’t be popular:

In my opinion there are a few reasons for this: one is that the current stock and custom maps - and mods- are not compatible with etxreal.

This means that server admin have to choose between a vanilla w:et including a couple of hundreds customs map and mods or this rather unknown new game called etxreal, with a hand full of maps and probably no mods at all… guess what they are going to choose?.. their main goal is to get as many players on their server as possible…

Secondly: although the main goal of etxreal is to enhance the graphics, this will also mean that the overall fps will be noticeable lower. I can already see players complain: " gosh, on ET I got a steady 333 fps, but with etxreal I only get 256 fps!!!"

Also maps will be larger in filesize; In etxreal there’s a spec, bump and difuse map, in et vanilla only difuse.

Don’t get me wrong I personally do not have a problem with this, but I think server admin - and more important- players will have a problem with this.

W:ET players are lazy - and server admins are like fuking sheeps - they will only host the maps and mods that players like… and they’re right, they should listen to what kind of maps players like: there’s no point in spending many euros on a server no one plays at, so I don’t blame them for that.

It’s the players I blame: For example, as a mapper I could be working for 8 or 9 months, spending all my free time and weekends on a original, new map, including new textures, new ambient sounds, new models or assets etc… OR I could take the battery, radar or goldrush source maps, change some spawnpoints, add some new pathways, make some doors bigger etc…etc and spent a few weeks on this, put my name under it and release it. Guess what map would be more popular among players… the custom map or the modified stock map?

For some reason players - at least the majority - like repetition, they like to play the same maps over and over again. and if they like something new it’s only a slightly modified version of a map they are already familiar with: For Example, instead of the desert map oasis, we get the winter map oasis, instead of fueldump we get the desert fueldump, instead of radar we get radar at daytime etc etc…

Wow, what a gotdamn surprise that all experience mappers are abandoning the et mapping scene :frowning:

I know It sound harsh, but I believe that it is this kind of attitude among players that is killing ET generally.

It’s kind of funny paradox If you think about it: If ET wants to survive it needs new maps, while players won’t play the new maps…

This is so true
While mapping, I sometimes think: pf, why am I even bothering. Spending so many hours in creating this map, so many frustrations when things go wrong - and it won’t be played probably

It’s true, people don’t like to see new things they don’t know

But on the other hand, I just want to make this thing which is is spooking in my head
If it won’t be played … meh - it’s their problem, but then they shouldn’t start whining ‘buhuhuuu, ET is dead buhuhuh’

bla bla

ET is dead from the moment I quit it - and we’re still in for another mile or ten :stroggbanana:

I gave up ages ago on trying to make maps to make people “happy”, now if I make one it’s just because I feel like it  (Creative outlet)

(shagileo) #31

Yea, so true
If people play the maps, all the better - but they just stick with them hard baked hardcore maps (supply for instance)

Not that those maps are bad, but it’s harder for new maps to give 'em a chance

(ailmanki) #32

What ET needs, is a updated ET. No Xreal, plain same ET - taking over improvements from ioquake3.
If somehow possible a serverside version allowing old ET clients to connect - and asking to update.
Something to replace Punkbuster.

Surely lovely would be a way to have Xreal aswell… e.g. being able to choose the engine.
Subtle changes in ET, could improve the graphics already a lot.

Lastly the virtual filesystem of ET could use an enhancement, so that different servers cant clutter everything.

(Pegazus) #33

I agree with those who talk negatively about Xreal. Putting all our cards on Xreal is a bad thought. If anything it will separate the community into two and that will be the end of that. So far Xreal has not been a promising product from what I have seen.

People are also disappointed with the Wolfenstein title because of what the developers did back in 2009. Many thought that the new Wolfenstein MP will be the new W:ET and the rumors of MP becoming free showed good signs about that until all went terribly wrong.

The Wolfenstein title has been pretty much ruined. So it’s time to think outside the box if we want to change the ET scene. Graphics are not a major role in the game because many people use custom configs that tune down the graphics to as low as possible. Perhaps we should just somehow improve the way our community works or even advance up our matchmaking process?

No one seems to play ET these days though, xp-save, no quarter, custom guis and texture/sound packs are not what made ET great to play for me and possibly others too. I’ve not played ET in long while but when I did even then it was hard to find a simple server with perhaps ETPro and a small selection of custom maps. The M8D servers were pretty good, dunno if they are still going though.

Sadly all them things mentioned above are popular amongst those left in ET, supply and demand has taken hold and we’ve ended up with a stagnating game with the majority of players only concerned with xp whoring, questionable ‘fun’ gameplay changes, gimmicky maps and an unhealthy obsession with making your server as unique as possible with custom menus and custom asset packs.

While all that may not present a problem for players who stick to the same servers, the rest of us are left with an etmain folder filled with all sorts of junk that potentially can throw a spanner in the works forcing a reinstall of the game to cure. Not fun at all.

ET has in my opinion been a victim of it’s own success.

I wonder with the source code released if it would be possible for the no quarter (and other similar mods) guys to release a stand-alone ‘game’ running their mod as the base game. May help reduce the problems mentioned above.

Only a few words out of my mind:
I`m happy for each map released.
Our ETW-FZ server hosts a 40 maps ETPro playground with not more than 2 stock maps.
We played over 200 different maps within the last 4 years, so I can definitly say: Our players like the work the mappers doing. Thanks for your great work

Since I also host wolffiles.de, I have some points explaining me, ET is not near to death.
Over 1800 times our testserver get started, hundrets of maps were tested, and over 90 campaigns created. ET isn`t dead, the community shrinked, but is still active.

The problem with trying to lure CS players in ET is that they are used on 1 hit kills and therefor they find it very hard getting used to ET where you might waste a whole clip if you cant aim to the head (which surprisingly a lot of COD and CS players cant do because even bodyshots there are deadly).

Im not saying they are all like that but pretty much every CS/COD player Ive met during all these years in ET always rage quitted yelling something beetween the lines “WTF IT TAKES A MILLION BULLETS TO KILL PEOPLE!?!!!111”. I told them to aim for the head but that didnt go so well :stuck_out_tongue:

(Infinitypl123) #37

So there should be a little change in hitboxes? More damage on body? Please don’t say that I want to make ET looks like CS or other CoD. It can be better to lure players from other scenes.

(stealth6) #38

hehe, you are contradicting yourself.

Changing the values a little bit would not lure players, since it would still be pretty much the same (500 000 bullets to kill an enemy instead of 1 mill :P), so then maybe you’d tweak it some more, but then it won’t be ET anymore…

(IndyJones) #39

making et more popular require adding (as variable!) iron sights and higher body damage.
it’s successfull for a reason.

YAH! Too many over customized NQ servers out there, thats why I set up my own server for my clan and made sure we have as minimal modifications as possible. We are currently running etpub because etpro isnt very popular among the random pubbers, but we have no double jump or other oddities. Trying to find the fine line beetween fun and serious/mature.

Its hard to get players on the server tho, seems like we have only our own members playing there along with a handful of random regulars. Ive been thinking of offering adminlevels for any clan who wishes to make our server their home in order to make it more popular and have some good games with real people instead of - yack - bots. But I dont know if itll work out or wether theres even any pub clans out there anymore or are they all just warring (not counting the popular pub clans ofc)
