Macintosh version of new ET?

(mitchelljd) #1

All of the games from RTCW and Quake have been great performers on mac.

I love my ET on MAC.

Is Splash Damage working on a mac version of the new ET Game?

if not, this company i just read about could make easy version for day and date release.

the official company website

Essentially the new macs are Intel machines, so they created a way to run the software and windows API, that requires NO porting. essentially it just enables it to run on a intel based mac. EASY AS PIE.

please look into bringing it somehow, quickly to macs.

thanks

or, instead , you could just install windows

dual boot ftw

They’ve already stated several times that there’ll be a linux release. This pretty much means that an OSX release is trivial to create, since the toolchains are very similar.

Although I haven’t done it myself, I understand that a modder compiles the mac version of the doom3 and quake4 by using the build scripts provided with the respective linux sdk release. While I obviously can’t say anything for sure, I would expect that the process will be the same for ET:QW, for both the main executable and the dll/so used in mods.

Note: I am unsure if the whole universal binary thing for OSX complicates things or not, but hopefully not if the OSX build toolchain handles things gracefully.

The conclusion of this post is that I expect that there will be a OSX release, because the doom3/q4 engine has done 95% of the portability work already, and a recompile would basically be the only thing standing between the existing codebase and a mac release.

The toolchains are similar, but the runtime environment is different. That means that the engine bits that deal with the OS are quite different.

Sure, but the point that I was trying to make was that hopefully the original development of crossplatform support in doom3 handled most of the potential problems.

Linux binaries can run on FreeBSD, even though their kernel is not identical. Is there actually any hope on getting such emulation to work for Mac, now the processor is (far more) identical?

I would be very surprised if it didn’t happen at some point.

We all know that’s your opinion Nail, no need to keep repeating it unless you offer free copies of Windows XP.

(I’d love to say that dual-booting with Linux would be better, but afaik most Macs have ATI cards…)

 beer is fun, sorry, I was just thinking that will probably be an excuse for game publishers not offering a Mac version, I should have elaborated

OSX > Windows

And compiling universal bins is usually as easy as specifying both -arch pcc -arch i386. There may be architecture specific things in the code that need attention, but I imagine it’s minimal. While Linux emulation on Mac would be real nice, it’s still emulation. I imagine they will release a Mac version of the game, but it’s pure speculation on my part.

Well there’s a rumor saying now that ATI is part of AMD ATI drivers are likely to be opensourced.
