Mac Client? Any and all who welcome this idea post.

(CHV) #1

For all us oeple who only have Windows just
so that they can play ET and would really like
to get ET on a Mac so that they can trash
that PC because their Mac is better neways
please help by signing this thread with your
help we WILL be able to coaxe splash
damage to make a Mac client EVEN IF
it is only with a few maps or can only give really
bad graphics or some other things that won’t
be as good as on a PC it dosen’t matter. At least
make a beta test client please. if only ppl with
macs can play with each other on this beta client
it won’t matter cuz there will be plenty
ppl to play with.

If you do make a fully functional clent and if
it only works with other macs it will be o.k. by me.

i wouldnt mind, then i could play the game at college…

Since there are more macs then pc’s there wich basicly SUCKS :frowning:

Don’t think it’s gonna happen and it’s been discussed at length before. My understanding of the situation is that SplashDamage are technically unable to produce a MAC version themselves, although there is someone else apparently able to but the decision would be down to Activision, as the game’s publishers, to make, not SplashDamage.

(although I could be completely wrong :???: )

(squadjot) #4

well, its free source now…we only need some guys to port it… :o

(Kendle) #5

True, assuming the SDK is all that’s required to make a MAC port :???:

(pgh) #6

Ask some Macgeeks… theyll be able to tell ya if its possible. Q3 AND RTCW have Mac versions afaik so…

(bani) #7

a mac port isnt up to splashdamage to decide. stop bugging them about it.

:banghead: :bash: :banghead: :bash: :banghead: :bash:

go bug id/activision instead.

(squadjot) #8

noone is buggin’. see it as a “tribute” :stuck_out_tongue: …people just wanna play the game on macs too… SD’s foums seems a fair place to start asking imo, anyways old topic and discussed before, guess macporters didnt try yet…dunno.

(Sauron|EFG) #9

You’d need to port the engine as well, and the source for that has not been released.

(squadjot) #10

hmm…i dont understand… its not a mod… yes its a Q3 engine…(btw ported ages ago) but ure saying that…u cant actaully use the source…before u have “license” to do it?? (using q3 engine technology)?

(Seph64) #11

No he is saying that the source that was released was the MOD source. You can’t build ANY executables with that source. To make a executable you must have the Engine source code which has not been released.

(squadjot) #12

oke…i think i get the pic… too bad CHV :stuck_out_tongue: looks like its gonna take some time before ur playing the mac version of ET…(if ever)

FWIW (and I’m no developer) - Sun Solaris has a Linux abstraction layer which gives binary compatibility - Cygwin for x86 provides a kind of compromised compatibility (POSIX 1) also - I realise that Solaris (SYS V) and BSD (Max OS/X) are from very different forks, but I’ve also seen that K Office has been ported across to Mac OS/X now as well.

Maybe the real answer is to approach the OpenSource groups and see if any work has begun to provide Linux binary compatiblity on the Mac - if the G5 Macs are as fast as Jobs would have you believe then they should be ok with the extra overhead .

This <–[ link] is kind of interesting when you consider that Mac OS/X is 90% Free BSD.

I guess the hard part is deciding if the port should run on the standard XFree libs or Apple’s own X manager - the stink about K Office was that they got it running using Apple’s X and window manager. My $0.02.

(Nehle) #14

Source is out. Mac OS X is UNIX, and ET has build script for *NIX
Say… this is a crazy idea, but …you could always… you know…compile it yourself?

EDIT: Sorry, forgot the engine is not OSS
I’ll go hide in a corners

(bani) #15

obviously :blah:

Its a bit more involved than that im afraid. The abstration layer works great as long as youre running binaries for the same cpu architure. In this case, x86 Linux binaries on x86 Solaris, or Sparc Linux binaries on Sparc Solaris.

Mac is PowerPC…

Now, an OSX port of ET should be fairly straightforward and AFAIK Brad Oliver @ Westlake has offered to port it for free. If you want Mac ET, tell Activision/ID software. It’s wasted effort posting polls on the splashdamage forums, as nobody here is in a position to do anything about it.

Interesingly, the Urban Terror developers (who are porting their mod from Q3 to the ET engine) have promised that they are not abandoning their mac players.

Interpret that however you like :moo:

(see http://www.forums.urbanterror.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=340&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)

(bani) #17

it means they wont be abandoning the q3 engine totally yet

(pgh) #18

Yeh lost another post… thought the logout bug was fixed?
