Low Ping Only My ASS!

(schmeisser) #1

Man am I sick of waiting 5 minutes to get on a server, only to be told “Low pings only”. My ping averages 75+/-. Today I was on the “oasis Server” (all oasis, all the time) with a ping shown at 53. Played great, no problems. I logged off for about 30 mins, logged back onto same server, still listed as 53 ping rate, I get the fucking “Low pings only” bullshit. This happens way too often. I tried another server later in the day with a listed 103 ping, same message, logged on fine to a server with a “lower” ping rate of 65. Is this just random useless numbers, or is each server assigned ping rate limits by the admin? It’s like there’s an elite low ping club that arbitrarily bumps average players. WTF???

Server admins can set a maximum ping. The trouble is, that it is checked only at connect time, so if there is some lag while connecting, you can get that message even though your ping is usually fine.

If this is the case, a simple /reconnect should get you in.

(sniser) #3

Yes. 99% of the times when I get that message a simple /reconnect gets me in.

ok, but wait, if that server is on a t1 as arent most servers. or at least i think. ok but t1 has up/down speeds, so it wouldnt be able to set a really low ping?or at least i think i know what im talking about. and cable and dsl have a type of up/down to so you could wait 2 mins and then try again and your ping will most likly be lower. try looking for a program that monitors your comps ping and incoming about outgoing signals, see what kinda trouble you get and what the best times of the day are to get on and whatnot, if its that nad than thats a good investment.

That makes a nice quote.

Bandwith != Latency

The “low ping only” message is just a bug. It appears randomly. You just have to reconnect until it goes away.

(BlackDeath) #7

?

(WiGgLeRiCe) #8

I think it’s just a loading bug, I get that low ping only alot, all ya need to do is just click reconnect and you should get right in. I also notice when maps are loading it can shoot your ping up to 999, which can be a problem cuz there are asswipes that always call a vote to kick you out cuz you have a ping of 999 instead of giving you a min or two for your ping to go back to normal

challenge pings are messed up (when you try to connect, you send a challenge ping), just hit reconnect.

and a note, a t1 isn’t all that fast. not even 2mbps.

T1/DS1 = 1.5 Mbits…

no way, we have a t1 at our work and we can run 300 mgs a sec on a good day and 100 on a bad.

t1 has up down speed, so it all depends.

ive never gotten a low ping at my work…never!

(Sauron|EFG) #12

LOL. Then you don’t have T1/DS1… (But I really doubt that you have 300 Mbit/s.)

Click for some numbers

A T1 is symmetrical, so it has the same up/down bandwidth… And as I said; latency (i.e. Ping) isn’t the same as bandwidth (bytes/second). Google it!

Do a tracert to the server if you want a clue to why the ping is high.

(The_Jesus_Zeppelin) #13

nope, we clock out at about 250 most of the time, i know for a fact we have t1. i work at a computer repair/game store. every download i do on thos comps is done at 200 kbs/s.

oh oops, sorry i said mgs, i meant kbs. i dont know what i was thinking. :bored:

i with i had fiber optics…in my house. :disgust:
i could so downlaod the internet!

Sauron, Best advice I’ve heard today. =)

The_Jesus_Zeppelin,

Just because you have a T1 from your location to your ISP doesn’t mean you have a dedicated pipe all the way to the target game server! Your packets have to go through a series of hops (and other pipes) along the way.

Do you have an idea where (physically) the game server is sitting?

If you’re in the UK, and you’re trying to play on a north American server; there’s something called the Atlantic ocean you have to traverse first. =). Even at the speed of light, it does take time for the packet to tavel there and back.

um…ok… :suspicious:

sure…doood

Nobody explains ping, so I will. The ping rate really isn’t of how fast the line is (but it does help), but how many other computers it has to go through to get to it. Example: I want to goto yahoo. It will “hop” (or go through) 3 to 4 computers before it reaches the yahoo server. The more “hops” I have to have, the worse my ping rate is. Ping = how fast it can get to the other computer and back to me again. If I try a Yahoo in Germany, it will “hop” well over 14 computers. Talk about a high ping rate.
So in the game, my ping rate is faster on the east coast (where I am now in the USA) than trying to play on a server in the west coast.
