Low FPS with good computer and other question

(inf3rno.hungary) #1

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I have many questions about Enemy Territory on different operation systems. I hope you can answer some of them.

1 .Is there any clue why is low my FPS and how can I fix it?

I just upgraded my computer, I have 2x more powerful CPU than before and 6x more powerful video card. It is not a big gaming machine: Intel Xeon Quad Core E5430 and Geforce GTX 750 Ti, but it should have constant 125 FPS and it does not. I remember having 125 FPS with the old config, but I started playing again after 5 years. I already tried out r_primitives 2 and turned off vsync. Those settings helped, but I still have sometimes 40-60 FPS especialy when there are many ppl on the map or somebody is shooting on me. With empty map it is constant 125 FPS. I have no network lag. I am playing on 2.60b etpro servers, currently on FP demolition and Hirntot with about 20-30 ppl on the map.

2. Why I have this strange display lag on FP demolition?

On FP demolition I have some kind of lag, I am not sure whether it is related to the previously mentioned FPS problem. I die too early after the monitor displays people and my nades blow up a lot later than they should. It is like I had hundreds of msecs display lag. Sometimes this lag pulls back by a corner and I get hit several times, sometimes I already jumped away from a place, but a nade or a panzer kills me. Sometimes I got hit by panzer or nade on a place where I am not arrived yet. At least on the monitor. I was a top player in 2005-2010, so I can tell this kind of stuff. This is really weird and it is server dependent at least on FP demolition it is really strong. Maybe it is on other servers in a weaker form I don’t know.

3. Do you have any idea how to run ET on multiple cores in Linux or Windows?

Is this even possible? I saw some multi core stuff on Windows but it never worked to me. It would be important to have this on Linux since I will change to Linux soon. I already tried out Ubuntu and Fedora and both are acceptable operation systems to me.

4. How can I fix mouse acceleration on Win7 and Linux Fedora?

I managed only on Ubuntu with xinput by setting the accelprofile to -1, but on Fedora there is a new libinput library which does not support this command. On Windows 7 I tried out at lest 5 accelfix registry hack in 2010 and 2013, but none of them worked. On XP I managed to turn off acceleration and had constant 50%+ acc. Since I use Win7 I have only 40% acc, which is a deal breaker. Partially that’s why I haven’t played for so many years. I did not manage to turn mouseaccel off on Fedora 23 as well. I can set the sens to low and shoot accurate for long distances and I can set the sens to high and shoot accurately for short distances, but I cannot do both as I used to back in 2009 before I changed from XP to Win7. So I have acceleration on Fedora as well. I tried out this with at least 3 mices (Razer Lachesis, Logitech G400, G602, maybe even more, I am not sure).

5. Is there a keyboard fix for Linux?

I have only English keyboard layout. It does not react on weapon switch when I press shift + w + a, thus I cannot change weapon while moving and I frequently die because of that. The 0 key with weaponbank 10 does not work for console like in Windows. I had to bind toggleconsole to the 0 key. It does not close the console, I have to use esc for that. This is really strange.

6. Is there a mouse fix for Linux?

My mouse behaves strangely on Linux, by sniper weapalt switches back to the non sniper mode and +zoom sometimes releases the binoculars. I tried this with G400 and G602, both have some kind of problem. In Firefox they don’t always react to the secondary button. I am not sure whether this is related to the in game problem.

  1. there was a console command that could cause the video card to drop its performance to about 20% (or even lower in better gpus). you will have to look for something similar to r_mode (but not r_mode, i am probably making confusion with etqw command).

  2. i have the same problem as you, while playing etqw. will resume what i have learned about it:

  • is server dependent. i got it first at [li], then a few years later in villa. recently someone posted a demo where i could see my self in the game, and i also had demo of that game from my perspective. so, i could see that i was being presented with a very delayed version of the game around me, even with low ping and clear lagomenter. after i asked in forum if anyone knew something about it, i got it in jesus and bba too. later i started playing at tgt (and it was like in the start of etqw, but just for a couple of weaks. then i got that sort of “lag” there too).[/li]- someone controls it, and sometimes if that someone is playing in your team, and losing badly, you may find yourself without lag for a few minutes.
  1. don’t think this is possible without a new version of the game (but i could be wrong here).

4.5.6. - go to www.wikipedia.org
find a page (preferably in english) describing “rootkit”.
also in that site, find another called “intel active management technology”.
and suddenly linux may not look so cool as it did before.

EDIT: add links

PS: good thing you mentioned this. i was about to quit etqw because of it. and apparently it would not solve my problem. better stay in etqw, at least there is plenty you can do, even when you cant hit sh1t.

r_primitives 2

(inf3rno.hungary) #4

Thanks!

It’s r_primitives, I already applied that, but the FPS is still low. Probably because ET uses only a single core and cannot handle that many connections, or the server is overloaded. I don’t know whether quakewars does the same.

I never played multiplayer with other games. I thought this strange lag is ET specific, but according to you it isn’t. It was much better with Windows XP than Windows 7. By Linux the hitboxes and everything else is completely different than by Windows. I cannot hit ****. I’ll try out this camera and replay comparison, maybe it shows something to me. Can you recommend a software it is easier to compare the 2 movies with?

Ye I know there are rootkits for Linux, but I don’t care that much. Windows is basically a spyware nowadays http://thehackernews.com/2015/08/windows-spying-on-you.html, by Windows 7 I had this mouse-accel stuff from the beginning, and currently the drivers are failing 2-3 times a day by my new video card. I tried out at least 3 different drivers, but none of them worked properly. On Linux I never had an issue with the closed source driver. I don’t like Fedora that much, but I think I’ll install Xubuntu and try to use that instead of Windows.

I checked this keyboard thing, on Windows I have the same issue with pressing multiple keys, but with different keys. So it is not that annoying. I’ll try Ubuntu. It has a different input library than Fedora, so maybe it works differently too.

for rootkit does not matter the operating system, its about the hardware. it might only matter for how the rootkit got inside.
i was saying that linux was not so cool because being open source is easier to make code for it.

(inf3rno.hungary) #6

I think you are exaggerating this. There are rootkit finder softwares available if you are worried about rootkits, but most of the attacks begin with giving admin right to the attacker code, so they can be prevented by thinking before acting.

(edxot) #7

well, you are right about that.

you problem is not at all related to rootkits. best thing you should do, in your situation, is to make sure that it is indeed a problem that only happens in that server. ask a friend to play 1v1 against you there, and to do the same in another server. this should be enough to verify it. then, if it is a problem only in that server, you may even play there to improve your use of other classes. some of them do not require much aim. we know that most of the times, the game gets decided in the fights between the best players of each team, so this may not be so interesting. but at least you can play.

i was talking about rootkits, because i had lots of problems in the past. things outside the game, that were used to get advantage (ddos, computer freezing, mouse freezing, mouse1 stopped working, keyboard freezing, cfg to default, and much more, harder to explain). the latest being my computer rebooting to prevent me from playing. so, i was just trying to tell you that things are not going to get better, just worse. and not just a little worse, i mean a lot worse.

keyboard: connect it with ps/2 instead of usb.

gfx: check if there is some anti aliasing enabled by default

Let me just put on my tinfoil hat. So you’re telling me people on the enemy team are installing rootkits on your computer to get an advantage?

With Windows XP I was able to do most of the time about 50% acc on the best public server in this game, was called Efterlyst. On this Hirntot server I should have about 55% acc on Goldrush, Rail Gun and Oasis and about 45% on the large maps like Fuel Dump, Radar. I am nowhere near to that since I am using Windows 7, ADSL and this Logitech G400 mouse. The most I can do is 45%, but usually only 35-40%. I have no problem with killing the best players in the opposite team, they are not that good. They have high acc, but they usually crouch and get 2-3 hs just like any non moving target. My problem is with killing multiple players at once. With this kind of acc I can kill 3-6 players at once only if I am lucky and give 2-3 headshots to everyone (rare) or if they don’t shoot back, for example when I backshoot or when they block each other in a small room. Once in a week the lag goes away for 1-2 maps and I got proper acc, which I really enjoy. Using a different weapon, for example rifle nade does not work. They lag away from my rifle nades, they usually hit, but does not kill if they see me before shooting them. With garand I cannot aim in this lag and sometimes got kicked because teammates are walking on my landmines frequently. The same with fieldops, people are walking into my arties. With heavy weapons I can kill a lot, it is fun for a while, but you don’t need real skill to do that. So this is not that big issue, I just asked it, maybe somebody has a solution. I’ll try this out with Ubuntu as well, maybe I have better results with that. Ofc. I won’t change to Linux because of this game, I am planning to do that in the past half year… I played on other servers but there was no change, sometimes it was even worse. What is interesting that the hitboxes are completely different on the 4 servers I checked. Ofc. they weren’t war servers, almost nobody plays wars nowadays in this game.

FXAA is turned off. I don’t have ps/2 keyboard nor ps/2 slot on my computer.

if you want the whole story you better get an umbrella too.

example: i even had my mouse with malware (science fiction but true). and a few days ago i was replying to someone who was saying something similar to what you said:

  • do i need to make a video of my mouse and put it in youtube ?

then, one guy, who i believe was the responsible, and from whom i only know a fake nick, disconnected at the end of that map, and an hour later my mouse was fixed. btw, it stayed “hacked” for several years.

another funny example: sometimes i switch off my computer, and the “numlock” light in the PS2 keyboard stays on (you got to love bugs in malware/spyware).

and i could stay all day in this.
