Low FPS with a decent system

(Maxstate) #1

Hello!

To get right to the point, this is my setup:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
1gb DDR ram
XFX 6600GT

Running on Windows XP ofcourse. It’s a pretty decent system, and I remember myself playing Enemy Territory on it with no FPS drops at all. Currently that’s not the case. My system should be able to run ET with no problems but I’m struggling to get 50-60 FPS on most maps with players on them.

I’ve defragged, downclocked my hardware to their default settings (RAM/CPU/GFX card are overclocked) and have done a lot of other pointless stuff others recommended I do but I still can’t seem to fix this little problem I’m having.
Anyone know why I’m having low FPS drops and how I could fix them?

Desperate here.

Edit:
Whoop this is RTCW:ET, hope I posted it in the right forum.

This could be quite normal depending on the resolution and AA/AF settings.

I have a similar CPU and a 6800GT, and I don’t get more than that when using 16801050 with 16AA/16*AF (but I get 125 FPS (capped) most of the time without AA/AF).

I’m running high settings, 32/24 bits, dynamic/detail textures, single pass lighting, 1152x*** resolution and the noquarter mod. I should be getting much more FPS, this is really frustrating.

That’s definitely low for your system. Make sure your drivers are up to date and that your cooling fans are all working.

(Maxstate) #5

I’ve tried numerous drivers, including old and dnew ones and my system is pretty darn cooled as it is. Maybe I should try the old 8x.xx series? I’m on the new DXX Ztweaked ones currently, I’ve tried the 91.47’s and the 162’s with no luck.

have you tried setting threaded optimisation to off?

(BondyBoy007) #7

I was having alot of FPS drops and stutters on my AMD A64 3700.

Turning off the “Cool’n’quiet” features of the processor in bios sorted that and now can get a constant 125 fps on most maps at 1600x1200

(Maxstate) #8

Where do I turn threaded optimisations off and why should I exactly? (Since my cpu supports threading/hyperthreading if I recall correctly)

Cool and Quiet is off, what other things need to go?

(SCDS_reyalP) #9

It doesn’t support hyperthreading, and only has one core. I know "threaded optimization caused me trouble with multiple cores, not sure if it affects single. The setting is here: http://www.collectivecomputing.com/~reed/et/nvetblarg.jpg

You may have to turn on advanced options or something to see it.

Damn brah you’re right, and all this time I was thinkin’ otherwise.
Thanks, I’ll try that.

(Maxstate) #11

Hmm no luck, that’s not in my list :frowning:

(SCDS_reyalP) #12

Are you running xfire ? if so, turn off in game integration.

The only thing running in the background is MSN, and turning it off doesn’t help either.
Thanks a lot for your help.
