LOD groups of reference files

What if I copy a reference object multiple times? Will the LOD group still work for each copy or will all together disappear at some distance? Anyone tried that maybe?

They will LOD independently of each other.

To see for yourself make simple large empty map, then make a reference with big brush and set some LOD on it to disappear totally, then place the reference twice in your map at either side with big distance between that is larger than the LOD distance you made, compile and see the results.
