Location Damage

(z00b) #1

Something I have not seen documented is whether QW will have clear location-specific damage. I am assuming it will be similar to Q4 in this regard…

But what I would really like to see (and please direct me to previous discussion on this) is a popup after you die. That popup would be a 3d rendering of your character, and the precise damage that hit your body, and how hard it hit it, would be shown. No more WTF moments and quickly scrolling mention of the weapon that hit you, but a precise location, a HUGE text note or graphic as to which weapon it was, and some sort of damage history leading up to that point (whether you were being healed, etc).

This is really lacking in current squad FPS games. It’s pretty lame to have a game that uses this internal information, and then just gives you a “You are Dead” screen to look at without any feedback as to WTF happened. Maybe some people like this, but it’s just silly. I want a complete breakdown of what happened and how, who ate my gibs, and so forth.

Yes, that would be super immersive

I think you can be immersive and also provide all the details ‘under the hood’

I used to play with a very ‘serious’ hardcore RPG group that was 100% in-character, all the time, speaking our own language, etc. But 95% of the people in that huge group also used every single mod that broke down each footstep and action in the game and presented you with the information so you know wtf was going on.

‘immersion’ to me doesn’t mean being cluelessly led around and fooled, but actually knowing what makes up the nature of the virtual reality you are experiencing and being able to access that information or not on a whim.

In real life we call this physics, and it’s a wonderful, beautiful thing to behold.

nice idea…I would be surprised if this was never said before.

Fair enough

I don’t think game companies pay enough to hire me ;), but they must have some people onboard with these ideas … My hope is that there is some developer discussion around this topic that I just haven’t come across yet.

(SlippytheWeasel) #7

That’d be cool. A little popup picture of you laying there with your head blown off, just to let you know that, yes, you died.

ouchies.

Nice idea for one spawn games.

I doubt that you have the time to examine how your playerfigure was “killed”.
Might be an option if you have enough time to respawn.
You also can be revived which doens’t give you much time.

The idea is interesting and all, but I must say, I don’t like the idea of a 3D model popping up every time I die just to show me information that I don’t care about 90% of the time.

I think a better system would be something along the lines of the KillCam from Call of Duty. The system I have in mind would modify the KillCam, but in essence its the same: when you are killed, while waiting for respawn, the KC shows you the last 5-8 seconds of your life so you can see what exactly happened. However, instead of simply showing you your last vision, I was thinking slow it down a little bit and have a read out display on your HUD showing what hit you, on what part of your body, and how much damage it dealt to you. Keep in mind, in ET its not uncommon to have 20-30 second respawn timers which I imagine will remain unchanged in ETQW as well.

For instance, you are walking along heading to an objective and suddenly see a grenade land next to you and a Strogg Aggressor pops out and starts shooting at you, killing you. So you pop into the respawn queue and have 30 seconds to kill. The KillCam begins playing your final seconds, and slows down right before you take damage. As the scene unfolds, you watch as the grenade next to you explodes, and up pops a damage read out on your HUD: “Grenade Shrapnel - Left Leg - 33 Damage; Left Torso - 45 Damage; 78 Damage Total”. As the KC continues playing you see the Aggressor pop out, to fill you full of holes: “Hyperblaster - Torso - 55 Damage - Fatal Shot”.

With this modified KillCam you could easily see how you were killed, with what, how hard you were hit by each item, and where it hit you. This would give you all the information you wanted, in a pretty nice little video snippet.

Of course you could include any info in the damage read out you wanted to, such as number of hits you took from the hyperblaster etc. That was just an example. In my opinion though, if this option were to ever become available, it should be a togglable thing, like once you die have the game say “Push F1 to view KillCam” or something. It would be annoying to have to watch it EVERY time.

Just my 2 cents. I hope that wasn’t too long, I always seem to write too much on forums.

Counterstrike has such an option/mod I believe (not graphical, just text) displaying where and how much you were damaged. It also shows the damage on the person who killed you so you can say ‘damn I got close’

(signofzeta) #12

ETQW should have a “Death Cam”

(ayatollah) #13

You people seem to forget that in ET:QW you can get revived and spawns are at most 30 secs apart. I think what you are mentioning isn’t viable in this case you just don’t have enough time to view all this. If you die you should wait until the last minute from respawn before you tap out. Also I seem to remember it saying somewhere that, when you are killed the camera on your body will aim towards the person that killed you, a bit like the medic cam in ETPRO, so you will know where the shot came from.

If you really wanted to know all this information, take a demo and study it afterwards. Use the knowledge you gain from this in your next game.

(BrightSoul) #14

the more info is provided, the better.
I wouldn’t mind an option which adds an overlay of trajectory lines, red dots and numbers when you replay a demo. This way you could see exactly where you aimed, what you hit and what amount of damage you dealt.

(ayatollah) #15

Yeah but as I said, it should be restricted to a demo, as in game there wouldn’t be enough time to check the relevant info out. Otherwise it could go like this:

Player 1 stands in spawn…

Player 2: Move!

Player 1 stands there…

Player 2: Godammit MOVE! We aren’t gonna win like this!

Player 1: Excuse me, I am calculating the arc of trajectory by which that last bullet hit me 2 cms from my temporal lobe. It occurs to me that this should only have done 300HP damage whereas I had 6000HP and shouldn’t have dies…

Player 2 blasts Player 1 in the face.

(carnage) #16

from some of the video i think there might be a free rotating cam while waiting for a revive and it much more useful to use this time spotting enemy positions, campers, units, movement etc to give you a better idea of whats on the battlefield when you come back rather than an in depth analysis of how you were killed by a legshot

and doesn’t ETQW use hitboxes over per polly collision anyway so you cant get the same level of accuracy about hit locations etc compared to say counterstrike

(murphIV) #17

As I wait patiently for ETQW, I have reloaded Call of Duty and I like the kill cam. I had forgotten about it, it’s been awhile since I played COD. As I read this thread I thought of it again and then I got to your post and I agree with you. As I was playing some mulitplayer, got killed a few times and was like WTF??? Kill cam comes on and I was like, “oh”. It seems that the killcam would definately stop allot of the people crying hax, wish they had it in BF2.

(ayatollah) #18

Yes but have you played W:ET? If you have you will realise that between dying, waiting for a medic and respawning there is no time for a “kill cam”. As you lie there you can scope out the surrounding area. When you are gibbed you can spec your team to get better knowledge of their position and other enemies. In W:ET there would be no time for a kill cam and I suspect ET:QW would be similar.

(Gringo) #19

Hahahahahahahaha funneh.

Tbh I have never really died in ET and wondered how it occured. Usually I am aware of what went on or a simple gander at the ‘who killed who with what’ text is sufficient.

Obviously for people who die alot they need something to fill all the respawn time. For l33tor’s like me kill cams and such are of little use

(BrightSoul) #20

A little OT, but whatever: when the game ends there are those 30 - neverending - seconds when you should review the game stats but instead you go get a coke or feed your cat just to kill the waiting.
That pause would be more interesting if the view of the blown up objective was replaced by cutscenes from the match like slow-mo replays of multikills, clips from the longest spree, and “heroic actions” in general.
That way you won’t mind if someone is not pressing “Ready”.
