Loading Custom Maps

(schmeisser) #1

Excuse my ignorance, I want to play some of the custom maps at home, simply exploring them on my own prior to playing multiplayer online. I have copied some .pk3 files into ETMain, but they don’t appear as options in the Host Server list along with the standard maps. Some of the map readme’s give a command to load the map, but it doesn’t work via the ~ console. What am I missing here? Is there a specific syntax that needs to be used in a map loading command? This is all second nature to most of you, but I am basically an idiot who likes to play ET. Any help appreciated.

Click the Host Game button from the main menu to open the server setup screen. From here, you want to select the gametype of Objective in the upper left window. The lower left window will now list all the maps the game has found. Simply select the map you want to play, then hit the “start server” button to fire it up.

You might want to assign a password or limit the players to prevent random people from joining your server.

This can also be done using the console. First, do /g_gametype 2 to set the server in objective mode. Then do /devmap mapname to fire it up. So if you wanted to play Fuel Dump this way, you’d enter the following.

/g_gametype 2
/devmap fueldump

Keep in mind that the map name is the filename of the map, not its “title.” This is generally the same name as the custom map’s pk3.

Once you are a playing a map and want to try another, simply hit escape and click the Ref button. From here, you can select the change map option and the list will show all the maps for you to pick.

Did you unzip them. Most of these come in a zip file which has the .pk3 (another zip) along with the authors comments. You need to make sure you have put the pk3 file and not the zip file into etmain. Make sure it was pk3 (I know you mentioned this but just make sure). And make sure it is properly in etamin because I know there are a copule of pk3 files sitting in zip files with a path so that when you extract they end up in etmain/subdirectory/map.pk3 and this will not work

No luck. I checked my etmain file, it shows alls the pk3 files i copied in, Navarone, for instance, is a 16 meg file with a .pk3 extension. I tried opening Host Server, selecting single map objective as gametype, but still only the standard maps appear in the list. I also tried stopwatch and Last Man, same result. WTF? There must be a way to load a single map. I know the maps function, since I can play multiplayer without having to download the custom maps. I feel like I’m overlooking something obvious, but what?

try opening the .pk3 files with winzip/winrar. if they contain a .pk3 file, you probably did it wrong. also, windows hides known file extensions by default, so a file with a .pk3 extension might very well have an .pk3.zip extension.
