Little Servers V Big Servers...

I have to say littler servers. I’ve just finished an excellent North African campaign of 3v3. All maps were hard fought and close. There was none of the stuff that usually pisses people off. No arty-spamming, spawn camping, panzer-bitches. None of it. And, no coverts or soldiers.

Smaller servers require people to concentrate on the objectives, because if you don’t, then it’s game over very quickly. I think once you have 10 or more people on a side, it dilutes the game and lets people do what they want. Smaller servers don’t allow that and essentially force you to work as a team.

I’m gonna keep looking for smaller servers because in my experience, they consistently provide better games.

Smaller servers without a doubt, although 3v3 is too small for ET. I look for 14 - 16 slot servers preferably, and never go above 20 slot if I can help it.

I guess that depends on your definitions of “big” and “small”. (do I sound presidential, yet?) I like servers with 6 to 12 people per team, with 8 being optimal, and 12 only when the teams are pretty well balanced. Any smaller than that and the maps are just too empty. It becomes either too easy for the allies to sneak around and plant, or, if the defenders stay close to the objectives, its pretty easy to hold off that small of group. Did a 1v1 one time (everyone else had left the server, it was late), and the poor allied guy just kept throwing himself at the tank (fueldump), but never managed to get it very far, between my mines, and the fact that he was actually worse than me in a 1v1 firefight. And, I could predict his movements.
If it goes above 12 on a team, the maps tend to get crowded, and you are either panzered from three different angles, or you are caught in arty spam. Though I have been tempted to give a 32 person server a go, just for the sheer mayham of it.

if it has less than 20 slots, i wont even play it

I’ts got to be 20 slots or less for me to join

It really depends on the map. ChiGC is a 60-person server and some maps can take 60 people and still play a very nice game. On the other hand, there are some maps that couldn’t take 18 and then it makes for a really painful experience. I have 3-5 servers that I scan to see what maps are playing and join accordingly. 26-28-slot is kind of nice though

Little servers. 5v5-10v10 is the best range, IMO. 2v2 or 3v3 can be fun if the teams extremely even.

Large servers can be fun, but most of the stock maps don’t play well with that many players, IMO.

Imho gameplay starts degrading at 8vs8 , 10vs10 is the max I go, and that is already a dumb spamfest :banghead:

depends what I’m in the mood for.

campaign has to be reasonably large, 8 to 12 players per side usually, but needs some reasonable heavy weaps restrictions.

stopwatch is better with around 8 players, 6v6 would be optimal but the extra 2 players per team reduces the disorganisation problems as there’s usually a few unexperienced players which can mean 6v6 is more like 4v4 + a few extra targets.

sometimes i like the 2v2 servers aswell, but those running the customs (e.g. silly ctf). I used to run one that i really liked except at the time there was a LOT of players who were really inexperienced and wouldnt pay attention to the rules - 2v2 really needs no use of support fire and panzerfaust etc.
