Linux ET locks after res change, and before movie (linux)

ET freezes due to dns queries if you aren’t connected to the internet. It’s very annoying (I’m on a dialup, and want to test maps).

Thankfully, it only sends udp packets to the things it queries, and doesn’t rely on any responses so you can just add this to your /etc/hosts file:

216.40.250.82 et1.evenbalance.com
216.40.230.37 master3.evenbalance.com
216.40.250.37 master4.evenbalance.com
192.246.40.80 id2.evenbalance.com
192.246.40.61 pbet1.idsoftware.com
63.146.124.20 au2rtcw2.activision.com
192.246.40.60 etmaster.idsoftware.com
192.246.40.62 pbguidauth.idsoftware.com

The end. Hope this is fixed in the PATCH!

It’s a cross-platform bug. The probelm happens the same way on Windows XP. If punkbuster is enabled, the game freezes up if it’s unable to connect to evenbalance.com (sometimes the system goes down on their end for 1-12 hours). You can disable punkbuster in etconfig.cfg with seta cl_punkbuster “0”

If you’ve already enabled punkbuster in your config, then you’ll get stuck at a black screen on startup. If you click Yes to an “Enable Punkbuster?” prompt when the game is running, then you get a graphics freeze and 3 seconds worth of music looping.

The bug was described in another post:

Oh, well, if I recall correctly, windows has a hosts file too (possibly c:\win(nt|dows)\hosts)

But it works, so I’m happy. Would be better if it did all network operations asyncronously and handled failure properly (far too many freeze points in it.)
