Linux ET graphical glitches?

I get that while trying to play ET (along with flashing on the screen of what appears to be other sections of the screen repeated over again in a different area for one frame) in linux, specifically red hat 9.

aopen ak79g max
athlon 2500+
integrated gf4mx (32mb)
kernel version 2.4.20-9
rh9 nforce drivers (can’t recall version, but yes they are the correct for the kernel version)
nvidia graphics drivers, most up to date version on nvidia’s site

anyone have any clue what the hell is causing this?

edit: someone has just told me that using my onboard ac’97 sound is probably causing some evil crap to go on, so i’ll see if disabling that will let me play glitch free

edit: another suggestion (from bani) is that i’m running it in a lower res than my desktop which is causing problems…

unlikely… except if you don’t have this resolution in your X config, but I don’t know if it’s possible to switch to that resolution if it’s not in your config
I’m running ET in 1024x768 and my desktop is 1280x1024, I’ve never seen something like this in any game (cards: GF3 and GF-FX)

eh, neither of the things i have listed up there work. i tried adding acpi=off to the kernel line at boot, but that did nothing as well (another suggestion of course)

now i’m being told to rebuild the drivers from source, which hopefully will work…

I had exactly the same problem with ET on Red Hat 9… but I don’t know how to fix it and I reformatted my linux partition because I needed more disk space for Windows shiiit :disgust: so I can’t help, sorry.

its the nvidia drivers at fault, go back the the 2nd latest ones, the latest ones have problems on gf4mx’s and probly older cards.

could you give me a link, and would they work with the 2.4.20-9 kernel? (might be missing a middle number, i’m tired)

well, i installed older drivers (april 2002 is the next to most recent one that i could find at nvidia’s archive), and the glitches are gone. i still get flashing and twitching galore if i don’t run et at my desktop res, but it’s hard to do that considering how for some reason i get <20 fps at 1024x768…
