linux et crashing at random times

(Demiurg) #1

ok, my et is crashing over and over again, i cant predict at what time, sometimes after 2 minutes, sometimes after 20, i dont get any errors in game, no errors in the xf86log, the only thing what i can see is this:
The King^7 was sniped by Bounty^7’s FG42
tijme908^7 ^1WAS KILLED BY TEAMMATE^7 Talonicus^7 (for example)
Received signal 11, exiting…
Shutdown tty console

let me paste you all that may be important:

no need to change the default.

Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together)

By default, Red Hat 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of

the X server to render fonts.

Option “XkbDisable”

To customise the XKB settings to suit your keyboard, modify the

keyboard, you will probably want to use:

Option “XkbModel” “pc102”

If you have a US Microsoft Natural keyboard, you can use:

Option “XkbModel” “microsoft”

Then to change the language, change the Layout setting.

For example, a german layout can be obtained with:

Option “XkbLayout” “de”

or:

Option “XkbLayout” “de”

Option “XkbVariant” “nodeadkeys”

If you’d like to switch the positions of your capslock and

i have the current nvidia drivers installed via the nvidia tool: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run

help is appreciated, for more questions about my system, query me in irc, quakenet “demi”, or post here, thanks

looks like you have a problem with your RAM or some library.

make sure this “XFree86-Mesa-libGL-4.2.1-21” is not used and see the NVidia pages (or the README):

In the Module section, make sure you have:

        Load "glx"

You should also remove the following lines:

        Load "dri"
        Load "GLcore"

Oh… and try the latest (4496) driver from nvidia .)

(Demiurg) #3

i tried it as recommended by the nvidia readme without the dri module, didnt work, then i tried it WITH the dri module as i read a post about that error on some page, but it didnt work either.
and, i realized, that i have the current nvidia drivers 4496, the number i pasted was just the number of the installation tool.
i tried to decrease my cpu speed (-> heat), but it didnt work

how can i make sure, that the xfree86-mesa-ligl-4.2.1-21 is not used?

(Demiurg) #4

ah, and everything works well with q3

(gonzoboi) #5

From what i read at nvidia forums, seems v4496 drivers cause trouble to a lot of people… see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s=efa9cf736308e5ad692a366060c48070&forumid=14

for example.

i personally use 1.0-4363 and have no problems at all with a geforce4 (i just got it for 55 EUR, a geforce2 is crap anyway for playing ET). If that helps you, here are relevant sections of my XFree86Config:

Section “Module”
Load “dbe”
Load “extmod”
Load “fbdevhw”
Load “glx”
Load “record”
Load “freetype”
Load “type1”
EndSection

Section “Device”
Identifier “Videocard0”
Driver “nvidia”
VendorName “Videocard vendor”
BoardName “NVIDIA GeForce 4 (generic)”
Section “Screen”
Identifier “Screen0”
Device “Videocard0”
Monitor “Monitor0”
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection “Display”
Depth 16
Modes “1280x1024” “1024x768” “800x600” “640x480”
Virtual 1280 1024
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section “DRI”
Group 0
Mode 0666
EndSection

You should also make sure MesaGL is not screwing you. Even though the nvidia installer reported no error in my case, i couldnt make it work until i manually did rpm --erase --force MesaGL-bla, and then install the nvidia drivers (kids dont do this at home). Notice that you’ll end up with a broken dependency tree though, but i’ve had no problems so far.

I would suggest you try with the 4363 drivers first, and if the problem remains, do some scientific method research to find out what is causing the SIGSEGVS – ie remove RAM chips one by one, disable pci cards, etc – you may want to run memtest86 to check your ram too

good luck!
