Level shaming

(Jurmabones) #41

The only solution is thicker skin. More insecure people will always look for a way to rag on someone. Even if they got rid of levels and had titles, then there’d be threads about title shaming.

(watsyurdeal) #42

^ He’s right you know, if I had title for playing Nader a lot people would probably give me shit for that too.

(K1X455) #43

I reckon it’s a level playing field and you don’t get perks for higher levels.

(Amerika) #44

This is one of the reasons why levels should be hidden. It makes people instantly think the game is balanced by account level (it’s not) and they feel as though they were beaten because the other team had higher account level players.

It’s just a point of contention as opposed to giving anything positive to the game as it stands.

(D'@athi) #45

To be honest, simply grab your, you know what …, and don’t give, a you know what …, about it .
And really, don’t try to reason with these kids, because they will try to reason with you in their “Your-Mum-Skills” and probably destroy you with their superior experience there.
And even, if you win, they will start to cheat, so don’t even try to reason with kids. You’ll simply make it worse.

(Ghosthree3) #46

Heh. I had the honour of a guy joining a game last night, saying “level 47, lol hacks?” immediately, then spamming the chat withs “hacks” every time I killed him. Which was a lot because he was trying to snipe on 350 ping.

(SucculentHeadCrab) #47

Yes, I think titles or fun nicknames (like tags or even forum stuffs) would be nice. It would also be nice to have maybe “levels” for individual mercs. Even just like specific cosmetic items or even taunts unlocked with time spent using mercs.

I also want an ingame announcer (or text) that lets everyone know “I AM THE CAPTAIN NOW” when I join a server mid-match to save the day.

*last one was sarcasm . . . . but no really.

^Have to agree with these two guys.

I’m already getting insulted in-game, because I happen to have golden loadout for Phantom and in general I play with him more often. Having a title for that? I wouldn’t mind, but at the end we would see title related flaming anyways sooner or later.
Toxic players will find a reason to flame, no matter is it your level, weapons you use, merc you prefer, loadout you have or even if they dislike the color of your shoes.

What comes about level, for me it shows my own experience with the game.
Also when I take a look to others, I can also guess how much my team mates have been playing this game. For me it shows nothing else than time spent with the game.
High level won’t make you instantly good and low level won’t make you instantly bad.
I like having and seeing levels in this game.

However if you get upset about something that random person in internet thinks about you, maybe you could think again is it really worth to allow a stranger ruin your day.
Sometimes it’s good to ignore what others think about you. And if those people annoy you in-game, mute them (if they are team mates insulting in voice chat) or just ignore the chat.
There’s no need to get upset just because a random guy in internet dislike you.

That’s a complete bullshit response. Thicker skin, thicker skin. The thing about thicker skin is that it’s thick, not impenetrable. Grate at it long enough and it doesn’t matter how thick the skin, it’ll start cutting flesh.

This is the kind of mentality is the problem with the gaming community in general. Cause you know what “get thicker skin” really means? Means, “I know my behavior is shitty so instead of trying to be less shitty I blame you for not being able to put up with it.”
What’s weird to me is responses like Crabby’s, the point isn’t that we’re ashamed of our levels, but this toxic as hell attitude people have because of it.
The attitude of other people is what drives me away from online gaming in general. There’s enough crappy stuff happening in real life that I just don’t want to deal with it when I log on to have a little bit of fun.

Unfortunately there’s not much to be done about it. Online gaming, especially shooters, tends to attract the younger, immature crowd. Combine that with the relative anonymity of the Internet and you have a bad situation. You get to see what humans really are internally, and it’s ugly.

We can talk about hiding levels, or giving titles, or whatever, but that’s only addressing the symptom to the real problem: Other people being immature assholes. I don’t think there’s a fix for that other than a real life beat down and parents not raising entitled brats.

Bad communities are what has driven me away from certain games entirely (I quit Eve Online for good after 8 years, for example, for precisely this reason - it is the most toxic of all toxic communities, bar none).

But Dirty Bomb, on the whole, is pretty good compared to other games. A vast majority of the games here are good fun with some cool people and I hope it stays that way. If all we have to worry about is some 8 year old screeching into voice comms that it isn’t fair the other team has a level 72 guy, I can handle that. B)

You’re an obvious candidate for a skin transplant. You seem really butthurt for some reason even though all I did was make a brief, non-inflammatory post.

(immenseWalnut) #52

Or, you could just stop caring what insignificant whiners think?

Wolves don’t lose sleep over the the opinions of sheep.

(Sorotia) #53

I don’t care much when there is one person with a super high level or two…but I seem to be in a lot of matches where I’m like the highest…I think I’m level 12 or 13…and the other teams is filled with people 20-30+ and they always vote down the shuffle teams and then we proceed to get stomped…

Then some loud mouth level 10 on their team who has more deaths than kills goes on to spout off how we were rekt and how EZ it was…like he actually contributed to the win.
I just go along with it and tell them it gives me a tingle in my pants to stomp them. :smirk:

You just have to ignore it, that or shit-talk them back for funsies. shrug Tell them “get mad stay bad, scrubs”, problem solved.

And this kind of rubbish behaviour won’t help it either whether it’s on your own team or in the other side.
Don’t make the situation worse than it is.

Man up and grow up.

Omg. Clearly I was so busy behaving badly that I didn’t see this person scolding me. Woops. Shame on me. :kissing_heart: Pfft. Some people are just no fun. Vidya gaems are srs bzns.

This isn’t Elementary school where if someone shit-talks you, you need to be the bigger man and walk away. Dish it back, and have a little fun. Make people put their money where their mouth is. I don’t have to grow up, because I’m not a baby deer trying to stand up for the first time when it comes to video games. If someone shits on me, I’m gonna shit on them. And I will laugh. A lot.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to sip a martini filled with the tears of scrubs and resume stomping them.

OK, this went from trying to figure out a way to remove a negative from the game to insulting each other because some people acknowledges the negativity. Due to this the thread will be closed. Try to stay classy ladies and gents
