legalize murder of modem users

(patchouli) #1

Be a modem user. 33.6 maybe. 28.8 with a shaky connection. 14.4 with Gerbil Power!
Why not be from Belgium and join a US server so your ping is over 500ms too?
Then spend your entire time staying as close to me as possible.

For this, I want you dead. I want your modem dead. I want your house
burned to the ground! I want to go Belgium in the middle of the night
and piss on your modem’s ashes!

Hey it might not be your fault. Maybe you can’t afford broadband, maybe it isn’t
available where you are. I understand. But I don’t care.

For the love of sanity please stop joining 32 player games. 12 is really pushing it.
I know you’d rather play big games like everyone else but you are messing it up.
Anti-Lag, what a crock, nothing helps when you get close to far away high-ping,
low-bandwidth players… besides punting them.

The game code is brilliant in that it’s only sending stuff that’s close to you and
therefore will allow more people to play on crappy modem connections but the
map design and gameplay of ET is created so everyone CLUSTERS UP at the
objectives and choke points and you quite simply cannot handle the datarate.
Most netgames these days have ping limiters. But what’s equally important is a
datarate tester. I would love to see something like:

ERROR: You need a sustained 128Kbps/sec to play here.

[/rant]

(Doc) #2

You got burnt by someone, didn’t you?

It’s not like a modem player’s lag directly affects your play, anyway. The only thing that might affect you is the poor play of the modemmer. Boo-hoo, he doesn’t give me med-packs fast enough, he’s a bad shot, boo-hoo. It’s more their problem than yours.

Oh, and I’d really like to tell you to go fuck yourself, but I won’t.

(_NeT_WalBanger) #3

Doc you are a bit harse there and not totally true

I was in a game once and i was shooting someone and they just froze so i shot another 3-4 and nothing happened so i walked offand then he teleported a train length away and turned round and started to shoot aat me so i spinn around and pop a few shoots at him and again he freezes so i stop firing then he teleports again etc etc…
It was really anoying Everytime i fired at him, as soon as my bullets hit him, he Froze then 2-3secs after teleported, making him Basically immortal. At 1 point there was like 4-5 of us shooting at him.
In the end i just had to walk off from him, im just glad he was a bad shot

(Englander) #4

I think if he was laggin that bad he probably had “CONNECTION INTERRUPTED” on his screen and thats probably why he was a bad shot,it would have most likely been equally as hard for him to hit you as it was for u to hit him.

(patchouli) #5

Fine, fuck me. (fair enough that rant was a classic troll’s post.)

It’s not an issue of being “burnt” it’s that his choppy teleporting ruins my fun.
And more than a few modemy guys on a high user server can bring everyone into a
bad spot. And he’s much more likely to get kills and have a positive experience if he
plays with fewer people. And I’m not saying all servers, obviously, just a configuration
option that would run a quick speed test on thoughput just like the pinger does.
\s_MinimumBPS xxxx or something.

There is something those with bandwidth love more than speedy porn; realtime gameplay
and communications. It’s just like a LAN party. A 56k modem user cannot do this. Maybe
(maybe!!) 4.7K/sec symmetric. They’ll try but it’s really hard. Most voice protocols will
take that, at a good enough quality to understand. Even though dual-channel IDSN has
seen it’s day, a real-world bidirectional 12K/sec is incredible by comparison.

Most people I know gaming online have bandwidth. Many people have 1-2Mbit or more
inbound and 256k or more outbound, for under $40 a month in the U.S. That’s well known
biggies like Time-Warner, Comcast, Verizon, BellSouth, etc. Maybe I should start singing
“Proud to be an American” because I know it’s different elsewhere.

I’m sorry it “burns” you so much too, but network intensive gaming cannot be done over
modem connections with too many people simultaneously. It’s just simple math. If you
need to receive 9.6k of information through a 4.7k pipe, it’s not going to fit.

I would like the option of not allowing people below a certain bandwidth point to join, is all.
Not just modem users! You may have great bandwidth but you’re streaming shoutcast
and have bittorrent running and other assorted bandwidth eaters, whereas this would
make you close that stuff until you reached a sustainable throughput acceptable to the
server max player size.

(Sauron|EFG) #6

From your rant it sounds like it’s a big problem, but I hardly ever see modem users on the servers I play. Maxping will get rid of most of them anyway - certainly all non-american modem users playing on US servers. So go bug the server admins of the servers you frequent instead. That might actually help you. Or maybe all those modem players are “proud to be American” too?

If you play on the Internet you’ll occationally see people lagging out no matter what type of connection they have. Period.

(Sick Boy) #7

just to set something straight:

we in Belgium don’t use modems for years now, we all have cable/DSL

well 99% anyways

(Narkar) #8

If i join a server with good connection and then my ISP fucks something up, so the ping goes to 300, then i dont care, i play when i want to play…

(ColdBackHAND) #9

This is a stupid thread and I’m going to give you the cry baby award patchouli.

(Bongoboy) #10

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone accuse themself of trolling before :weird:

It can be frustrating for both high and low pingers (pingees?). But, alas, that’s what you get for playing on a public server.

Server Admins are free to adjust the Min/Max Ping settings. If there’s a persistant problem, it may be worth politely petitioning your Server Admin to increase their Max Ping limit.

And I seem to be regularly owned by players from Belgium. I guess I’m just unusually attractive to Flemish and Walloon bullets. And rifle grenades. And landmines. And knives. Sigh.

Still, probably no need to murder anyone.

:moo:

([=O=]SMYLER) #11

Right i just CAN’T let this go.

I posted a while ago with regard the Wils man being dressed up in nazi clothing, he didn’t appreciate that and, yeah fair enough. No offence was meant and this is my official apology…

BUT what the FUCK is this STUPID CUNT patchouli going on about people from Belgium for.

This is a word from me you fucking fool patchouli, Belgium is a quite a nice place, it’s good, I’ve been there, I’ve had fun there, the people are fucking nice, they even have nice beer.

Sorry Wils man, this may indeed be your right to ban me from the forums, but I couldn’t let this go.

patchouli, you are an absolute fool.

Oh aye btw I’m not from Belgium or married to a lady from there, I’m Irish, and at the minute am not impressed at all by the comments made by what is obviously an absolute eejit.

And yes I also get me arse handed to me by Belgians regularily, some of those fuckers are EXCELLENT shots.

Later people, see ya’s in the game.

(Wraith2k3) #12

Ahh, I see the sun is shining again

([=O=]SMYLER) #13

It is actually and I’ve got the BBQ on. And yes patchafuckingwhatever the sun shines in Belgium as well. You fuckin’ prick, mumble, whinge, moan, complain.

Wraith, I’ll hand you yer arse soon enough ya ho  (sup dawg).

(Dawg) #14

Hi Smyler… calm down. I think your medicine is overdue.

I gotta say that the amount of time it would have taken to make that post should have been enough to release the steam of frustration that built up while he was playing in the conditions he mentioned. Ergo, he should have ditched the post. As others have noted, the servers can limit the ping - contact the server admin.

I do not know and Belgians, but they make some interesting beers - that makes them good people.

(twiFight) #15

w00h! this is a fun thread

Anyway, here’s my POV… I don’t think his rant against belgium is against belgium per sé, probably just an example country. Belgium is a good country and I often have fun matches with belgian people (I’m dutch so I often get good pings on belgian servers and vica versa).

Secondly… I partly agree with the TS. I don’t mind a ping 300 player… shit happens right?! But when I get shot by some modem pimp that I couldn’t even see because he’s lagging too much, or when all pings of all players increase by 50% cos a modem player joined (yes I’ve seen it happen more than once) then I get mad. Not that I hate him for having a modem, not at all, not everyone can get high speed connections. but what I do hate is that it screws people that do have high speed connections.

In the end all I wanna say is that people can have probs cause of modem players and yes, belgium has some great beer (but the netherlands too ;))

(WiGgLeRiCe) #16

dont forget about their kick ass chocolates and waffles , yummy :chef:

(SCDS_reyalP) #17

Modem players don’t lag the server. There is no plausable mechanism for them to do so. They send and receive LESS data than broadband players, and the server doesn’t ‘wait around’ to hear from them or transmit to them. If they did lag the server, it would represent a serious coding error in the server. Furthermore, when the engine was developed, modem players were a large portion of the gaming population, so it seems very unlikely that having them connected causes problems.

If modem player are owning you (while you have good connection) your problem is lack of skill. It’s that simple. Same goes for players from other continents. I have played on euro servers with a 200 ping. Trust me, it’s not an advantage.

Players with extremly bad connections (worse than normal modem) do seem to be protected from from bullets when they get CI, and really warpy people can be hard to hit. However, anyone whose connection is that bad will have even more trouble hitting you.

edit:
Oh and belgian  > *

(twiFight) #18

I said I got shot by them, not owned
Fortunately I’m a fairly good player and often have nice pings (30 ms) and end up in the top 3 most of the times. I have played a few times with p2p on thus having 300 ms ping but I still owned the other team

Anyway, that wasn’t my point at all, read my post again please

(SCDS_reyalP) #19

I read your post. You claimed that modem players lag other players on the server. That is bullshit.

My commet re: getting owned by laggers/modem players was not directed at you.

(IPvD) #20

I played RTCW for 2 years on a modem before the unlagged code was added in a patch. Even with unlagged, its harder for them than it is for you, believe me…
