Leaderboards ¿

(XxHaTeD-RaTeDXx) #1

Hi everyone,
I was #9 world wide on Killzone 3, but because of a glitch (Double XP unlimited with a voucher) that Guerilla Game isn’t able to resolve, I preferred to stop playing because I didn’t have this glitch & I had to playing 2 times more than them & I didn’t find it just. So, I wonder if there will be a world ranking & games “bodycount” only.
I’d an answer quick & easy for know if I pre-order Brink or not.

Thank’s in advance.

Probably not, since it appears that Splash Damage don’t want to have leaderboards for the main game. There will be leaderboards for the challenges.

(XxHaTeD-RaTeDXx) #3

Oh… Brink has a great potential, but without leaderboards…

(Humate) #4

To reiterate what Herander said - the leaderboards are for challenges. These challenges test your ability to perform in certain scenarios. Within these challenges you can unlock certain things for your character, that indicate to other players online that you are a competent player.

(madness) #5

yea…without leaderboards the game will suck for sure. it’s a given. 100% every game needs leaderboards to succeed

(Herandar) #6

I just said it has leaderboards. ?!?

(Weeohhweeohh) #7

I have nothing positive to say…so I will just say hi.

Hi

Let me finish that sentence for you, but without leaderboards there won’t be pubstars with too much time on their hands who think they are actually skilled.

Leaderboards provide a yardstick against which you can measure your progress. This is an important feedback mechanism. Many people are happy with just winning the current game they are playing. Some prefer to try to get better and better and want to track their progress over time.

I think for Brink, any leaderboard should be a clan-based leaderboard. You would register for a clan and anytime you (as a group) wanted to play a ranked match, you would all queue up like in an RTS game and it would assign you an opposing clan to play against. This would allow for a leaderboard fit to the team-based nature of the game.

Alas, that is a lot of work for which I cannot claim you will sell a lot more copies.

Maybe if that’s not feasable (not enough full teams matching simultaneously?), it could adjust your points for every victory/loss your clan completes as a team. If only a fraction of your clan is playing in the game, you would only get a fraction of the points. So if 6/8 players are all in the same clan and they lose, they will lose some points on the ladder. If only 3/8 players on the team are from the same clan, their clan loses fewer points. Same for if you win. The more of your team which is from your clan, the more credit you are given for it’s victory/loss.

I’m sure this kind of system could be worked out so it wouldn’t be exploitable and could accurately track the best clans out there. Some kind of random matching system would have to be used though.

You know you get better when you start winning matches you lost before, try clan matching, thanks

Unless you’ve been in the competitive scene before, joining can be daunting. A more integrated version would be preferable. Not likely unfortunately.

There was a leaderboard for SD’s last game etqw. However it kind of lead to people playing for stats and not for fun and when the leaderboard went down due to actifail, it actually improved the quality of games.

I know you like to play with leaderboards, but maybe…just maybe…if you just this once…as an experiment…tried playing the game the way its meant to be played and play to win and for fun, and if you want to track your progress then play competitively. Who knows you might like it.

Except that the leaderboard he is talking about just measured total XP (at least so I gather based on the context and the double XP glitch thing). So it’s pretty much just about who plays the most.

The ETQW leaderboard Apoc mentioned was the same thing, total XP. And yes, they encouarge people to XP whore (those based on total XP, or even XP/hour) and find any glitch or method to garner huge amounts of XP instead of playing the game the way it’s meant to be played. My theory is this is why SD has put leaderboards in challenges, to give those guys a place to go do their thing off in a corner somewhere where it has minimal impact on the rest of the playerbase.

Bridger there’s a giant thread on your concept called Starcraft Style Matchmaking or something like that. The consensus I believe is that it would be great to have built in ladders/matchmaking, but I don’t think anyone really has any hope this will be included. Next best thing is to get a group together and enroll in a ladder. That’s the kind of leaderboard that is actually meaningful in a team based game.

(LyndonL) #14

Oh my God. Please don’t let this degenerate into another competetive thread. There’s enough of them circling atm already.

To the OP. If you want respect (and to be taken seriously), don’t post your very first post as “I was #9 blah blah” since most people will look at you and think you’re a tool - purely because your ranking is of no importance to the point of your post. That being said, welcome to the forums, and stay away from Herandar… He has small hands; smells like cabbage.

Not yet, I was in the clan of the ex #1 in Killzone 2, and I was #9 on Killzone 3. I’m done for the competition.
I planned to be in the top 10 with RayeD_X (#2 Killzone 2) on Brink, but if there will be no leaderboards…

(Crytiqal) #16

don’t tell me it was on a console platform, right?

(Diablo85) #17

Seeing as Killzone is a PS 3 exclusive…

(1234567) #18

Can’t we all just be happy with the fact that Brink is going to be revolutionary game that’s lots of fun?

(Striker92) #19

i thought it was that there are leader boards, just that they are based on xp and not k/d (like etqw). Or am i confusing leader board (global stat tracking) with in game leader boards :\ Also no K/d doesnt mean no competition. And jst the game isnt based on K/ds doesnt mean killing ppl is a viable tactic, ive seen ETQW players with 60+ kills and were still able to complete objectives and help their team out…dunno if i swayed of track there for a bit :\

(SockDog) #20

I would consider it a sign of a quality developer to treat leaderboard chasing/glory as a separate game mode to the core gameplay. As such I think the challenges are perfect for such people and hell I’d like to take a break from the game and see where I could rank on different core aspects of the game.

I hope Brink’s design, while obviously tipping a hat to other side pursuits, does so in a way that can subtly teach that playing the game for the game is far more rewarding than getting your name on some valueless board or gaining some pointless rank or XP level.
