Latest Brink Video Gets SMART About General Gameplay

Seriously, I went back five times, clicked your thread, landed back at this one before I got it.
I didn’t know that “toon” was a RPG term that wasn’t interchangeable with other genres (I need a citation on that good sir  ). I’ve just always used the term instead of typing out character or avatar or w/e. I can understand that you are anal about it though. Were you/are you heavy into RPGs as well as FPS?

I guess I just use the term “toon” like someone would use the term “kid” or “cat” or “guy” to denote anyone be it a female or someone my elder.

Either way, I don’t think you are “not making friends” XD I think you’re a cool kid <-- :D
Toon the RPG. I only play FPS really… Not much of an RPGer at all.

Who knows it’s probably interchangeable. I just say character. There’s actually a personal reason involving an acquantaince that is the real reason the word “toon” annoys me lol so carry on good sir

And Herander, back in ya box!!

(Herandar) #43

You should say ‘avatar’. God damn James Cameron ruining perfectly functional words with crap stories.

(LyndonL) #44

Avatar’s are for chat

I’ve heard the same as well about manual input giving you a better reaction time than the SMART commands. I shall have to make it my duty to master the manual input.

I’m just wondering how when jumping your AVATAR will differentiate between you just wanting to jump for the hell of it and you wanting to jump and actually grab something to mantle.

(LyndonL) #46

…now I feel bad. :frowning:

I assume that to perform the actions you still need to hold the SMART button whilst pressing the manual controls.

i.e: hold Shift AND press jump.

Wait so what is this “surfing” thing? If a heavy follows a light will he move at the same speed and wall hop after him?

Also, are land mines invisible to the enemy team? That mine that the player placed didn’t look very cloaked to me.

Operatives must spot them to be visible, afaik. Like in previous SD games. That’s what they showed in the last get SMART video

The health regen is pretty fast here and there is no video cutting, so is this the real thing?
I would prefer for it to be atleast half slower.

Some things work fine with just the SMART button. For instance, in the Container City footage, he jumps up to that ledge. That will work with just pressing LB/L1/(whatever PC key).

On the other hand, if you look at, say, the first SMART video that is set in the dry-docks, there’s a segment where he dashes, jumps, hits a pipe, jumps to the left, hits another pipe, and then jumps to a ledge that would’ve been simply impossible to reach from the first ledge. That simply wouldn’t be possible to time, based on my current understanding, with just holding LB. You’d have to hit A to get the timing so tight that you can just hit a pipe and keep jumping.

makes sense. I could see that the combo he pulled in the dry docks would need to be timed with manual inputs of the “jump button” as well as having SMART enabled.

Some good points from this comment and the comment that Lyndon posted as well about SMART being enabled while manual input is being enacted.

Double negative… You want it to regenerate faster?

(madness) #53

source ? didnt the HUD look different back then ?

(Linsolv) #54

I might be making that date up. But you’ll notice every time the reporters got hands-on, they got a “tutorial video” beforehand. What did you think it was?

EDIT: Incidentally, not providing source. You can choose not to believe me but I’m not going looking through all Brink news ever to find a reference to a tutorial video.

(madness) #55

OK. I was under the impression that this is all footage from final version. As it’s gonna be in the actual game…and why would they show outdated material in official promo videos when the game is all done.

(Seyu) #56

Seems, this is from the pc version, no red gummy bears nor is there the X icon for buffing.

(Mustkunstn1k) #57

Aura means nothing, they have clearly toned it down.
And the button needs nothing too, I mean it’s not like they show a button from the PC version. They just made it ambiguous.

Maybe on PC they will have 2 buttons? a smart button and a sprint button? 'Cause the smart system might misenterpret your intentions and take you somewhere you didnt want to go which might mess your timing for a manual smart move?

EDIT: O.K i was being an idiot, a more logical system would be you just have to tap SHIFT to sprint. So you don’t need to hold it down unless your using the SMART system.

(Mustkunstn1k) #59

Yeah. Press shift one and you start running until you let go ‘W’. And while running you can jump, slide etc.

(Realirony) #60

I believe its the same for console as well, tapping L3/left stick to engage sprint and holding it down to engage SMART. good mechanic for differentiation imo
