Lag with new patch

(Ashke) #1

I don’t normally pay attention to posts relating to lag, as I think its quite dependent per person. But earlier today, my 32 player server was packed and pings were good. Average ping was around 70-80 with some people around 30-40.

Well I installed the new server patch, and everyones pings just doubled. I tried lowering/raising maxrate and it made no difference. I have anti-lag off. The same peope that were pinging 50 before now ping 120 along with everyone else.

I have other servers running on the same box and the ping times to those are fine so I’m unlikely to believe its my server or upstreams.

If its not one things, its another… :banghead:

Why?

(Ashke) #3

Because I don’t feel that people with broadband should be penalized because some one is on dialup.

(SCDS_reyalP) #4

Sigh.

That is about Neil Torontos unlag code, but the et antilag does exactly the same thing.

(Iamthefallen) #5

I wonder where all the myths about the antilag system comes from, amazing amounts of FUD is spread whenever it’s mentioned. When Ufreeze for Quake3 came out, people cried in agony as they assumed it meant that only modem players would be able to play now… I guess reading up on something before dismissing it is too much to ask.

i’ve experience the same thing u do, my favorite server ping use to be 1 but after i’ve install the patch, it triple!!! to 300 something. Every server have ping higher then 200. I can’t even play !!! i hope this is only temporarily.

([fun]scott) #7

i heard the et patch has a new pb. i dont suppose this has reset the max dl and maxcon dl so its lagging everyone out… or is it just a security update with the patch…

(bogs) #8

But it helps people with broadband more than it helps people with a dialup connetion?

(Ashke) #9

Geez talk about missing the point of a post… Antilag was off before the patch so I don’t see how its relevent to the double ping times people experience with the new server patch. Its enough that I don’t like antilag. Get over it.

I dont know whether the patch included anything to do with PB or not, but PB updates itself automatically as you play, so it shouldnt need a downloaded patch for anything I can think of.

If I’m not mistaking:
The patch updates your PB but when you connect to a game it will auto update too so it should make no difference

The problem could lie in either… From running a SOF2 server with PB, I know how a PB server version can make clients lag like a mofo. So the problem could be in a new version of PB server side/client side, or it could just be the new server patch.

(twiFight) #13

Well I installed the patch (eventhough i never host) and still have pings below 40.

So I wonder what the problem is…

(Ranstaton) #14

Well I haven’t gotten any lag from the new patch, but then aggain I haven’t played the game on a server with the it pathc…

No problems here either.

I am getting CONTINUOUS lag spikes on my server now that I patched. Every 2-3 seconds you get a big burst of connection interrupted, then its fine with great pings for a few seconds again. The console just shows Hitch warnings about long frames whenever a lag spike passes through, and I noticed that during the lagspike ‘top’ shows a drop in CPU usage for the etded.x86 process.
This is on a Dual Xeon 2GHz/1024M with plenty of bandwidth.

(SiliconSlick) #17

We had a problem like that on [ND80]The Grotto yesterday… all of
the sudden, everyones pings were in the 100s (normally most are
below that0. It was weird because the 2 other ET servers on that
box (dual Xeon) were running just fine and there was no indication
in “top” or “ps” of excessive load.

Quitting and restarting the server fixed it. Haven’t seen
the problem reoccur yet.

(Ark42) #18

Restarting my server hasn’t fixed it yet. There is no excessive load on the box, and only one game server runs on it. The only other thing running is qmail and apache, but they take up minimal cpu usage. Swap is fine, I even tried ‘swapoff -a’ to disable swap and everything runs fine (no out of memory errors causing the kernel to kill random processes).

(MAN-AT-ARMS) #19

What I’ve noticed is that the lag only shows up on fueldump…all other maps, the pings look about the same as they always have.
