Lag whenever an objective sound plays

I have this problem where the game lags for 2-3 seconds EVERY damn time a NEW objective related sound plays. For instance if we are playing goldrush and it is the first time someone repairs the tank I will lag for 2-3 seconds, the second time no lag, if it is the first time sound spots a landmine that map I will lag 2-3 seconds on the “landmine spotted” sound, on further discoveries of landmine no lag. I have come to think that this is a HDD issue, that for some stupidly retarded reason the game does not load the proper sounds for each map in the beginning of the map so it has to read from the HDD every new time an obj related sound is needed.

Anyone else with a similar problem? What was your solution? Is this a general problem? How do I fix this? ANY input at all is appreciated, I am sort of a perfectionist and seeing my stats take a 10-20%(yes those blasted maps with 247 obj sound spam) hit because I am watching a connection interrupted icon is NOT fun.

Are you under Windows 7? What graphic card do you have?

If NVidia card, you should open the NVidia Control Panel, and disabled Threaded Optimization and Vertical Sync for ET.

Try increase your sound cache and hunkmegs.

com_soundMegs
com_hunkMegs

Default value for soundMegs is 24, for hunkMegs 156. Check if you have these values ingame.

Also, yes, this sounds like a memory problem. Though 2, 3 seconds is a bit long to read from disc imo.

Soundmegs is at 100 and hunkmegs at 512

Could it be that a antivirus is scanning the files?

Another thing, if you have somekind of newspack installed, its possible that soundmegs is not big enough.
Since some newspacks have more then 100mb wavs… But well I doubt that is your prob.

  • 512 mb hunkmges is a big waste of memory. A value of 128mb is more than enough.

  • 100 mb soundmegs might not cache all sounds. Enter client “cmd /s_list” to get more infos. From my experience some maps use up to 160mb of sound cache memory. Option A is to set com_soundmegs to a value of 160mb. Option B is to set a value of 256mb (2 ^ 8).

but I only get info that 24 is set and 128 is latched. How do i set 128 for real?

Start your ET using extra arguments in the shortcut, or set those variables in autoexec.cfg

well i get the “latched” when loading autoexec, even after vid_restart, i’ll try writing it directly into profile config in both etmain and etpro

it seems that higher settings even prolong the warp moment after playing new sound - I have no idea how to fix that. this sucks, cause ET is best multi ever and I cannot play on obj servers and even levelling up gets me warps.

Which Win7 version are you running ?
What security applications are you running ?
Can you show us a list of PK3’s that’s loaded ?
Since when did this problem occur ?
Do you have other HDD’s ?
What’s the state on your HDD ? (age, space used, etc)
What other applications do you have running besides your security applications ?
Did something(windows, punkbuster, whatever) updated recently ?
Did you try to update your sound/motherboard(in case of onboard) drivers ?
Did you try reinstalling ET ?

  1. since i’m on a aristo notebook (2-3 years)
  2. only one, three partitions (10GB system and two 115GB)
  3. the age is ~3 years, quite a lot of space on C and D (4,5 and 31 free, respectively), only >1,5 GB on E (game is on D, E is only for music), everything regularly defragmented
  4. only etminimizer when playing, running services are only pb-related (not counting windows-related and I have many of them disabled already)
  5. no, no such updates were performed
  6. I guess I did try to find other drivers for my soundcard, since it’s onboard and there’re only kind of universal sound drivers for my type of motherboard
  7. yes, I had preinstalled version for a few years and reinstalled it from a scratch some time ago

hm, I noticed ET is saying I have pentium III, where it should be pentium dual t3200 or something
maybe there are too many pk3 loaded?

changing between 44khz and 22khz doesn’t seem to provide solution
I also tried playing on server created by myself, no pb, no tzac, and still got them warps sometimes, tho they weren’t watchable through lagometer, only through fpsmeter and then in gameplay too.
I also deleted now few unused maps so there are fewer pk3s now.
lowering sound performance in sound options in control panel doesn’t do the trick.
what is even stranger, sometimes new sounds are being played with no warp, tho there were no map with at least one.

maybe it’s the dual core being a bi*ch?
edit: nope, setting affinity to single core doesn’t help.
edit2: maybe I should try playing with some external sound card. If only there was somebody to lend it for a while…

Probably you joined the server where one lamer admin made you download pk3 which has autoexec.cfg and it messes up settings. I have seen that happening before.

Remove all custom pk3’s from your etmain. Also are you running your laptop in “performance mod” ?

hmm, I suppose I have no “slow-me-down” modes running in here. in nView, I set the 3d settings to be fully controlled by applications, so that system wouldn’t choose instead. I moved all the custom pk3s in etpro folder, let’s see what it will change.

yes, I even tried ridiculous ones like hunkmegs 512, soundmegs 512 and zonemegs 512. hmm, I think I saw cheap usb soundcards, need to check them. I suppose my realtek chipset is helluva crap.
