Lag issues..any solutions?

In-game lag can make for a frustrating ET experience, I cant count how many times I’ve gotten killed because of bad frame rates. I’ve tried tweaking every setting to get a boost in framerate but after talking to players in-game who have similiar problems I’m convinced its the game not my pc/broadband connection. Are there any console or configure scripts I can tweak to boost my performance? Will the full version address these issues? Btw I absolutely love this game regardless of the constant lag.

i have tthe same probs.
1 vs 1 fight is at the moment absolutly laggy.
I stop playing now.
it makes more frustation than fun.

There are different settings you can change to improve that fact :

first change connectionsettings :

Rate 15000
maxpackets 35
timenudge 0
snaps 40

Pings get faster about -40 ms…

cg_drawfps is the command to show fps…take a look @ them, perhaps its your PC…

where do I change the settings?

Press the ~ key and bring the console down or edit your config file and change the settings there.

Also, try setting your memory settings so:

seta com_hunkmegs 128
seta com_soundmegs 32
seta com_zonemegs 32

This doesn’t directly address connection issues, but it does improve the game’s performance, reducing perceived lag.

Thanx for your tipps.
i will test it later.

it would be the best, if we get a new version of et in the future.
i´ve heard that the lag problem was solved in the new version.

I upped my rate to 25000 and wow what a world of difference…thanks alot guys…I now get little lag whereas before it was almost unplayable at times

(Mr.Green) #10

Most servers are capped (sv_maxrate) way below 25000 so anything above that cap won’t change a thing.

(Mumbly-joe) #11

ya u right, it was at the suggestion of a server that I upped my rate to 25000, worked great there but didnt do a thing in other servers…so a good setting would be 15000?

There’s a bug with the animation of players at the moment, where their movement looks skippy instead of fluid. I think a lot of people see this and assume it’s lag since it has a similar effect, hopefuly it’ll be fixed soon.

you can use
/cg_lagometer 1
to see if you are really lagging.

Use
/cg_drawfps 1
to check your frame rate, low FPS can feel a bit like lag too.

In general, yellow and red are bad, blue and green are good :D. A more detailed description from a very old john carmack .plan

Interpreting the lagometer (the graph in the lower right corner):
The upper graph (blue/yellow) slides one pixel for every rendered
frame. Blue lines below the baseline mean that the frame is
interpolating between two valid snapshots. Yellow lines above
the baseline mean the frame is extrapolating beyond the latest
valid time. The length of the line is proportional to the time.
The lower graph (green/yellow/red) slides one pixel for every
received snapshot. By default, snapshots come 20 times a second,
so if you are running >20 fps, the top graph will move faster, and
vice versa. A red bar means the snapshot was dropped by the
network. Green and yellow bars are properly received snapshots,
with the height of the bar proportional to the ping. A yellow
bar indicates that the previous snapshot was intentionally
supressed to stay under the rate limit.

The upper graph indicates the consistancy of your connection.
Ideally, you should always have blue bars of only a pixel or two
in height. If you are commonly getting big triangles of yellow
on the graph, your connection is inconsistant.
In a heavy firefight, it is normal for modem players to see yellow
bars in the bottom graph, which should return to green when the
action quiets down. If you are getting several red bars visible,
you may want to look for a server that drops less packets.

Setting your com_hunkmegs high if you don’t actually have that much memory can kill level load performance. Unless you are actually hitting the disk in game, it should not affect in game performance.

The rate you get is the lower of the server and client limits. There is no ‘correct’ value. Most servers won’t actually give you 25k, but setting that will give you the highest they allow (often 8k-10k). As long as it doesn’t flood your connection, it should be fine.
