just a warning [win2000]

… had very strange issue…im ONLY telling you guys this because…this happened to a friend of mine…and he ended up reinstalling win2k.

oke, here goes:

Yesterday evening i updated winupdates (some security, and a netdriver(intel))… after i installed… and rebooted…it kept rebooting… it got to just before the login window…then “click” reboot… (no warning no nothing)…after SEVERAL trys (beleive me)… i tried to reboot my comp… i left it…today got home from work…still same…

then i rebooted in safemode… then…problem solved…did nothing besides that…

i dont know whats the cause of this…i have similar machine…did same updates (same netcard type)…and it runs fine…

…this was just friendly info, as i know many gamers run win2k to gain performance. (y)

Thanks for that  - fwiw, I stopped the W2K updater service a while ago and tend to do updates en-masse via a service pack or critical upadte - but only if I absolutely have to tbh, bitter personal experience has taught me the value of a readme file :open_mouth:

*oh wait - I do remember seeing similar problems for both W2K and XP where the machine would reset on, or just before a login would appear - turned out to be directly related to the waitstate setting for RAM - iirc (and it’s a bit hazy from all the grass) but I seem to remember having to set the T state to 3 from 2 before I got stability - might be an idea to save your BIOS config (if you can) and use a ‘failsafe’’ BIOS default and see how you go.

XP wins again!

xp is teh loose

XP > *nix.

Started attempting to use Knoppix Domi… :x confused

But, best bet when updating OS’s IS to wait for the service packs. Winupdates I found when using 2k just failed constantly and made things worse. Did the Update finish 100% and deffo install? If it only partly or failed somewhere along the line it more than likely fked some stuff up.

um, play 'em together :open_mouth:

*edit, if you can be bothered and have an SB card - set your speakers up for 4 waysound (even if you have headphones, just be careful which output you use on the back of your card - I think their split for surround so you get different tones going to each output) - now go into your EAX control panel and on the ‘master’ tab, add Parametric EQ (default setting) and set the volume to 99% - also add Frequency Shifter and set it at ‘slower’ and set the volume to 90% - with headphones on it can make you feel dizzy after a bit :open_mouth:

as i said, XP is teh loose.

Its sluggish, has too much ‘added’ clutter and from my experience is ALWAYS slower than win2k.

([!]Icon) #8

i liek XP because its the only operating system that ive had a good expierience with, and teh clutter isnt so bad, its just a matter of how you organize your files.

unless you like win ME… :moo:

heh  - [!]Icon - don’t be offended - it’s not often these days I’m impressed enough with something to be ‘messing’ with it - good work on your part though if you did the animation for him, I was just messing with effects in Animation Shop - any chance of syncing your guy to 130bpm
