Issues...

(puubert) #1

Just finished up a round of Gold Rush, playing against quite a few people that are much better than me. Came across two issues and I was wondering if there was a general consensus about these or not.

  1. Panzer Suicides: You’re shooting me and I’m too close to survive, but I’ll take the XP anyway.

  2. Constant Aistrike/Arty strikes: You see a guy running towards you, next thing a can pops up and he’s gone and you’re splattered everywhere. This was the predominate form of defence against the tank, as well as mortars.

As far as I’m concerned, both are a cheap way of completing said objectives. Any tactic that leaves the enemy with NO chance is pretty low in my books. This is a game and there are certain ethical requirements that should be followed to make the game enjoyable for everyone.

I’d like to see ALL explosive weapons removed from the game. Give everyone a pistol, and a SMG and thats it. People would get much better a lot faster, and the games would be more even, as long as the teams are set up evenly. Then set up games with nothing but explosive weapons for the people who can’t get enough of little pixel explosions.

instead of using dynamite for objectives let’s replace it with competitive basket weaving to win the map.

How about this: we change it from a WWII setting to some weird future of hyper-violent sport-combat, add some fancier weapons (maybe a “lightning” gun, or a “plasma” gun, or–heck–even a “rocket launcher” would be cool), do away with the whole “objectives” thing, and change the name of the game to “Quake III: Arena.” I hope that name isn’t already taken?

Anyone play that TRON2.0 game…it’s got some stupid frisbee thingy that you throw at enemies and you can’t even move after you’ve thrown it because if you move your mouse it changes its path. So you got to sit there for an hour (because it travels slow) till that thing gets to, and hopefully hits, the enemy all the while you’re completely vulnerable to attacks cause you have to stand still. Then you have to wait for it to get back to you (can take up to 5 sec) since you only have one disk and many environments are big, and you have to jump around so the enemies don’t kill you while you wait for it. Then you throw it again…and wait and so on and so forth. Such a retarded concept, I hate those nerds that play frisbee. It’s a good thing that game has looks going for it or else…

In conclusion this argument has been beaten to death and everyone loves panzers, airstrikes, artillery, rifle grenades, and most of all the ever popular mortar guy with the two wasted field ops that sit next to him feeding ammo (I’m gonna kill you xp whoring bitches).

If you want to have some fun with it, join servers with no friendly fire and go to the mortar guys and throw a grenade at them. It will move them off their spot and it will take them an hour to realign. Give you some quick laughs.

… tactic that leaves the enemy with NO chance …

I don’t think you have absolutely no chance. If you’re trained, you know how to avoid such “duels”. Well, not always (since the persons are doing suicide manouvers).
You’re running around a corner, and there is a panzer guy who is putting his rocket to the shoulder (and you hear the magneto). If you’re quick, you can get him. And it sure feels great.
The F. o. (spamming airstrikes) is annoying. (Battery.) But somehow, you will “fight through” if you attack long enough.

Yep, usually because panzers are so slow there easy 2 pop in the head, and it feels SOOOOOOOOO goddamn good when u kill someone whos about 2 shoot a panzer :smiley: { i know }

(Kerunch) #7

Yep have to agree with that  Nothing better in hearing the panzer booting up just as you pop him one.Makes up for the other 100 times he gets you. :banghead:

The F. o. (spamming airstrikes) is annoying. (Battery.) But somehow, you will “fight through” if you attack long enough.

The two times I’ve played Gold Rush with the defence we only got the tank to the bridge the first time, and second time the second barrier. I don’t know if it was just my team, but it’s impossible to stay near the tank long enough to fix it without being pounded by something, and when you do, the tank moves 2 inches before being pounded again. Maybe if we had a couple of hours…

(Rockford) #9

When the tank is being pounded constantly on Goldrush, or anywhere else for that matter, you have to send out small squads to hunt the evil FieldOps and frag them. Once they’ve been fragged, you can take the time they’re in limbo to move the tank. An added benefit is that you’ve driven them out of their positions, making it more difficult for them to hit the tank.

If you’re fortunate actually to see the FieldOps throwing the can, then your job is really easy. Give chase and frag the guy without delay. It’s only when you hesitate that the strikes will cause major problems.

Two things you can do about the field ops spam.

First off, you can simply fight through it. This is much easier when you’re a level 4 engie and have the flak jacket. You can dance with artillery for a good number of hits before one of them kills you. Even a direct hit won’t gib you, giving your medics a chance to poke you so you can get back to work.

You can block airstrikes by getting right above the can before the planes come in. It results in the “aborting, can’t see target” and while the can still blows up (dealing 90ish damage) it won’t trigger the strike. It’ll take some practice to get down, but can be remarkably useful against someone who keeps spamming them. This also works if you can get the tank to drive over the can if the field ops tosses it short.

Second, make the field ops focus on something else. If your team is putting pressure in front of the tank, you should be relatively safe pushing it forward. If you force them to defend their spawn, they won’t be able to push out and lay support fire on the tank.

While panzers are incredibly powerful for that first shot, the soldier is pretty weak after he’s fired. So if you can survive the first shot you’ve got an easy kill. If you can catch them with their pistol out, you have enough time to kill them before they can switch to the panzer and get a shot off. You need to evaluate your surroundings when you come up against a panzer. If you can, take cover or get something between you and the panzer. If it hits a tiny pole seperating you, you won’t take any damage. If you can’t avoid the shot, crouch for the extra accuracy and go for the head. Even if you don’t kill him the next teammate that goes up against that guy will have an easier time.

If you are a server admin there is a g_heavyweaponrestriction variable that limits the amount of support fire available as well as panzers for your team. Other mods like ETPro lets you cap the number of panzers a team can use. Some servers already impliment this, you just have to go looking for them.

when you see the smoke, run away. I dont understand all these people who seem happy to use coloured smoke as cover or something, half the time people seem either totally oblivious ot actually attracted to it. Run away, you have loads of time.

Tip: imagine a straight line from the position of the f’op and where the can lands. The bombs will drop perpendicular to this (perpendicular at the time of the vioce that says “affirmative [etc]”, not at the time of throwing). Run away, in a direction to keep a straight line between the f’op, smoke can and yourself.

(Machine for to kill) #12

hmmm I didn’t know that. I always wondered if there was a way to control the direction of the airstrike and i guess there is.
Nice tip DG

I knew you could do this in RtCW but I didn’t know that this could be done in ET. Is it part of the Shrub mod? The few times I tried I ended up dead.

(Dingo19) #14

What ethical requirements? Any tactic is legitimate if it results in a win. For every so called “cheap” move there is a counter move.
And enjoyable for whom. If you cater for the lowest common denominator, then we all should just go play a little Mario Sunshine. :banghead:

Until some little crybaby gets owned by a good shooter, then the calls for even more nerfing start up.
Or we end up with even more cheating and haxor accusations that we have now.
Sorry mate, the game’s pretty bloody good as it is. Nothing needs to be changed except for the whiny attitude of some of it’s players.

(Machine for to kill) #15

If you don’t like all the fancy fighting of ET then you might find Americas Army more to your liking. It’s free and a far superior game to ET. Almost exclusive rifle fighting. Look for maps that use the M4 instead of m16 as in my opinion it is the single best rifle in the history of mankind. I’ll take anyone with it…anyone…just bring it on.

Nope, its always been there. Try crouching on the can if your not already, then make sure you jump off right after you hear the planes overhead, otherwise the can explodes, killing you with it.

(puubert) #17

But it’s a game, games are meant to be enjoyable. If we were out in a real battlefield, then you do what needs to be done. But it’s a game, that’s the bottom line. I didn’t find it much fun watching the tank being shelled constantly. I know people will say “just leave then” but I shouldn’t have to. I get enjoyment out of shooting people, I don’t see the point of constantly lobbing cans outside of the easy kills.

Thanks for the advice guys, I’ll try it out.

btw for some reason g_heavyweaponrestriction 0 seems to disallow heavy weapons - while having no restriction on artillery. I presume thats a bug tbh, since the way its done normally you’d expect it to be the minimal artillery setting. 1 or even 0.00001 is low setting (the minimal 2/min i think?) but the rounding always goes up, so one PF player is allowed etc.

Ideally (imo anyway) 0 would be a minimal artillery setting, with -1 being no artillery and no heavyweapons.

  • insert grumble about rifle grenade being a heavy weapon *

Cool, thanks bro.
